I am an Enneagram and typology consultant and this is one of the best books I've read on The Enneagram. Chestnut is at the cutting edge of exploring and explaining the elements of this system. I recommend it over most others for both beginners and advanced learners. Beginners will find her general descriptions of the types enlightening. Many advanced learners will be exposed to in-depth analysis on what "subtypes" really means in a way that is not usually addressed, except by Naranjo in works that aren't generally translated into English.The territory of the subtypes is explored with impressive nuance and compassion (an issue which famous Western teachers have ignored or been so excruciatingly general about so as to almost be useless, including-maybe especially--Riso and Hudson). Chestnut has a true gift for writing, as well. My only issues are that, here and there, she uses quite unflattering (bordering on insulting) descriptions of a few subtypes, which doesn't feel all that useful and is not in line with what I see in real life, Two or three times, it can be as if she is only concerned with the bottommost levels of certain subtypes, or that she might have a couple of biases she's not accounting for. That's a problem, but it doesn't ultimately make me think less of the book or the book's importance.

This book provides some very helpful points of view on the enneagram. The discussion is well-organized around the nine basic types and the esoteric structure of the enneagram, itself. These types are considered as arising out of archetypal patterns of responses children might have to their environments, especially with respect to making adaptations for survival that are irreversible and carry into adult life. These adaptations have a shadow side of human characteristics that cannot be adequately incorporated in the survival strategies. Dr. Chestnut discusses all of this remarkably clearly. It is relatively complicated by the dynamics of the enneagram. She is very interested in discussing how we can grow as human beings, given our natural, often adaptive, survival strategies. Each enneagram type has three subtypes (hence a total of 27 subtypes) based on whether our mode of adaptation focuses on a more solitary orientation to life, a more social orientation, or an intimate intersubjective orientation. All of this is discussed in a way that clearly shows how the 27 subtypes can help us to understand human behavior. The book represents a considerable achievement, and is especially to be recommended if you have some knowledge, already, of the enneagram. I would have liked to have seen a fuller treatment, especially of the wings, but the author has done an excellent job with what she does consider. There is an even more complex side to the enneagram, and this relates to comparing the types in pairs, such as comparing type 5 and type 6. The author gives a presentation of these 36 comparisons in an appendix. This is extremely helpful for roughly identifying your type, if you do not already know it.

This is the third book I've purchased on the Enneagram, and I've definitely enjoyed it the most - however, I wouldn't recommend this book to beginners. If you're new to the Enneagram, I would start with Discovering Your Personality Type by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson, which includes the Riso-Hudson Type Indicator - a pretty intensive test to determine your type - and a brief overview of the 9 personality archetypes. The Wisdom of the Enneagram is an excellent book for a more in-depth understanding of the personality types.I ordered this book when I found that Riso and Hudson's books weren't giving me the depth of understanding that I wanted. Beatrice Chestnut's book builds off what Riso and Hudson do in the Wisdom of the Enneagram, but goes much more in-depth. If I didn't already have a lot of background knowledge, I might not have enjoyed this book as much as I did. I especially appreciated her examination of the subtypes, which she explains in great detail, and her explanation of the counter-types. Overall, an excellent read and purchase!

First: if you are unfamiliar with the Enneagram, buy this book!! Strange symbols and language aside, the Enneagram is a great tool for self-discovery and understanding, and totally changed my life. It gives you words to solidify your hopes, motivations, and fears, and helps identify practical areas of growth based on you function differently than others. So worth it!!Now for my actual review! This is a great "textbook" for those exploring the Enneagram. It has very detailed analyses of each type, with additional information about instinctual variants that I found truly helpful. Chesnut gives an objective and informative introduction to the Enneagram's admittedly complicated format, clearly explaining concepts such as growth and regression paths, type relationships, and archetypes. It even includes a section for determining how various types are mistakable for each other, and what the core differences are. Definitely something to add to the collection!!

I so appreciate Bea's thorough and insightful approach to teaching the Enneagram through this book. I've studied the Enneagram for almost a decade, having worked with several different teachers. My personal perspective is that Claudio Naranjo's understanding of the 27 subtypes, which Bea aims to elucidate in this book, is a critical aspect to the model that many other Enneagram teachers have thrown aside for more simplified approaches to the 27 variations.As a devoted student of Claudio Naranjo, I see Bea's book as a great honoring and celebration of the work of this primary innovator of the Enneagram, and as an executive coach, it has become one of the only Enneagram books I invite my clients to read.

Recipe's and information was a lifesaver for my 11 yr old mix breed recently diagnosed with CKD. Diagnosed early December. Admitted to clinic for 4 days on IV drip plus new diet plan. Good health lasted about 2 weeks then she stopped eating. Took her back to vet for another IV and discussed euthanizing option. Found information online about Dr Pitcairn and his "dog loaf". Made it for my dog and she ate every bite. Has been on the dog loaf plus supplements for 3 months now and you would never know she is sick.

According to our vet, my 14 year old terrier mix had a few days to live due to kidney failure. He was so ill he refused to get up or eat food for over a week and couldn't keep anything down the week prior. He started to get those "droopy eyes of death" as I call it, and that's when I knew there wasn't much time left. I tried to talk myself into letting him go, but wanted to try one more last-ditch effort. After consulting with a homeopathic vet, he recommended following the information in this book as well as giving us some homeopathic meds and vitamins to give him. To our surprise today he is eating well, playing and sniffing out the rabbit holes in the back yard like old times:) I am beyond grateful to Dr. Pitcairn, Dr. Dym and herbalist Juliette de Bairacli-Levy. This book is amazing. If you have read my other reviews, pardon the repetitive nature of this one and skip to the bottom.I have a beautiful dog family whom I love very much and have always tried to give them the very best care available. I took the Vet's advice as gospel and never let them have any table scraps, always sticking strictly to the Kirkland brand kibble (as the Dr. ordered) and only treats specifically produced for dogs. I was constantly assured (by numerous vets, as inevitably whenever any injury or illness occurred it was outside of regular business hours and so we were forced to take them to emergency clinics) that this was the way to ensure optimal health and the longest lifespan for my sweet babies.The first time I considered straying from this path was about a year ago when a fellow student gave a presentation on the RAW food diet for dogs. I was very intrigued and looked into it a bit, but was reassured by our primary Vet that it was unnecessary and being an insanely busy student at the time, I accepted his advice and set the idea on the back burner. It wasn't until we decided to breed our oldest daughter (yes, I refer, quite seriously, to my dogs as my children) that I became fully aware of the immense benefits of cooking & preparing meals for your furry loved ones. I wanted to ensure a healthy, smooth, pregnancy & labor and after considerable research, I decided on three books to help me make the switch. "The Holistic Dog Book" by Denise Flaim, "The Whole Pet Diet" by Andi Brown, and this one. From everything I read, Dr. Pitcairn was the way to go but I always think it's good to have a few different perspectives on something so that you can create a plan that is best for you. I have been overwhelmed by these books and I highly recommend purchasing them together as they make great companions for each other."Natural Health for Dogs & Cats" is a large volume, full of pretty much everything you need to know to raise healthy, happy four-legged family members. The book is split into two parts, "Natural Health for Pets" and a "Quick Reference" section. Part One takes you through every aspect of pet health from pregnancy, to birth, to infancy and every stage beyond. This section also contains recipes specifically for each of these life stages as well as a "Healthy Powder" to ensure that your pets are receiving all the proper nutrients in order to live long, healthy lives. Part Two is a reference guide to every scenario you might want to investigate further without reading through the entire text when you are pressed for time. It's basically an A-Z list of different health issues one might encounter with their pets and how to treat them. This was very helpful in determining the best diet to feed our pregnant girl to ensure she had a healthy, successful pregnancy. There are also chapters on how to make the switch, creating a healthy environment, and holistic & alternative remedies for your pets. We have four dogs and we began to make the switch from kibble to food, immediately upon receiving these books in the mail. I have never been happier and they have never been healthier! (They're pretty stoked about the good food too) We began implementing dietary changes only a little over two weeks ago and I have already seen incredible improvements! Their coats have never been so lush, shiny, and soft! And our handsome boy, who has had skin conditions since we rescued him (and we've tried several Vet-recommended treatments, including shots of steroids, to no avail) has started to put on needed weight that we could never attain no matter what we did, and his skin has almost completely cleared up! And I know this is only the beginning of our amazing new journey to a healthy, happy family! I am so grateful to have these excellent resources in my home!If you are looking to make the switch, this is the perfect starting point! And if not, you should reconsider :) When it's all said & done, we are actually spending less money on food and it is so easy to prepare right alongside our own meals, and the reward of truly healthy pups, is beyond anything I could have imagined!

This review is overdue... I bought this book in 2006, but I was already using the prior edition for a year, since my dog Jake was 10 weeks old. I bought maybe 6-7 books on dog nutrition and read them all - my vet was sure that if I tackled home-cooked diets for my pup, I'd kill him. I figured if I can be trusted with nutrition for a child, I can learn to do it for a dog...I liked Pitcairn's book because he's a voice of moderation in a cacophony of strident voices, and because before he wrote his first book he'd been a vet for many years, gone back to get a PhD in deeper issues around pet health, and had had his own dogs on home made diets for 20 years. He approaches his decisions with a mixture of deep research, careful thought and fearlessness - he doesn't accept the status quo but he doesn't follow every crank fad.I stayed on Pitcairn's diets because every time his (new) vet has done blood tests, my Jake comes out with flying colors. My vet says Jake has consistently had some of the best blood test health values in his age group over the 9 years we've been going to him.At 13+, Jake's health remains generally strong. And that's why I stay loyal to Pitcairn's advice in this book.

Excellent book!! I would have saved a ton of money & time if I would have gotten this book a couple of years ago, I've spent countless hours researching trying to save my dog and have done a great job, my yorkie is 18 months post diagnosis of bladder cancer, I've only treated her holistically at home. So far I agree with everything that in this book. If you are sick of poisoning your dog with western pharmaceuticals, get this book and try a new way!

On the plus side, this book has tons and tons of fantastic tunes. I appreciate that it includes some from other countries that have become popular in the United States as well. The Binding is a little tight, so turning pages is sometimes tricky, but for the price it's good.However, I have repeatedly found really standard folk songs that are not included, which is surprising. It's not like they have to worry about copyright for any of this stuff. A few that we have examples are: Down by the Bay, Short'nin Bread, and Where the Saints Go Marching In. Really?! It's great to include thousands of songs, but if it doesn't include all of the basics it severely limits its usefulness. I have already been taping in additional songs, and I am considering getting it rebound into a binder where I can easily add missing songs as I come across them.

There are songs in this book that one can play after learning just a few chords. As you progress in your playing, add embellishments to the songs and play those that use more complicated chords or add different strumming. Some of these songs are widely-known, others will be new. Many are public domain, but having them all in one place is worth the cost. If you want to be able to play and sing with friends, this is a good starting point for building your musical repertoire.

Naturally, you will be totally uninterested in most of the tunes herein, but I think you will find many, and in good versions, that you will want to play or sing. Someone else will feel the same way, naturally, but about a different subset...This book is titled to go along with Hal Leonard's "Fake" book series for, primarily, composed and copyrighted songs. But these are folk songs: some have a known composer, but all are in the public domain. Nevertheless, this is not some careless collection of picked-over trash; for whatever reason, the editors felt they should do a good job on these humble tunes of the people. They went to the original versions as they could find them, and included all the known verses (unless there were more than twelve...). Good show!

This book is amazing if you are looking for easy to play folk songs from around the world. It is about 500 pages and includes guitar chords and lyrics. It is great fun and a phenomenal resource. Songs appeared which I learned in elementary school over 50 years ago which I had forgotten. Really thorough!

I like the diction coach CD (native speakers pronouncing the lyrics) and it's nice to have the accompaniment tracks so I don't have to play piano while I'm trying to sing!

Hard to believe this was written 45 years ago. It was phenomenally prescient, and it still feels representative of the modern era and well-positioned to predict the future. Toffler's premise that the accelerating rate of social change (including ever-greater transcience, novelty, and diversity) is outpacing man's ability to cope comes with a dour imperative: adapt or die.We, as individuals and as a civilization, need to understand "the accelerative thrust triggered by man has become the key to the entire evolutionary process on the planet," and Toffler suggests we need to seize control over the rapid waves of change headed our way before they overtake us. Sadly, society does not yet seem to have heeded Toffler's calls to action, and much of our lives are filled with idle, ephemeral distraction while the ground shifts beneath our feet. Climate change science was not as abundant or conclusive in the early 1970s as it is today, so while they're no mention of it in the book (it's also a natural phenomenon, while Toffler focuses on the accelerative thrust of tech), it is a perfect example of how humans need to be more future-oriented and prepared for massive change.Toffler's writing is well-researched and fast-paced. It reads almost like an action thriller. His descriptions of the accelerative wave of change sweeping through society actually made me anxious as I read--today the force of change is almost tangible; you can feel its pressure everywhere you turn, with all of the complex decisions we're faced with and the new information we're required to process on a daily basis. I'm sure Toffler would find it ironic that I was speed-reading his book--with so much to keep up with, I feel there's no time to read at a leisurely pace anymore.I appreciated Toffler's self-criticism throughout. He acknowledges that no single idea is "omni-insightful" and that, while some of his suggestions for solutions may appear naive, such as transforming our economy to pay more attention to social and environmental welfare, they are also critical to the survival of the human race.Do not underestimate Future Shock. Its message is clearly a driving force behind Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity Is Near"; billionaire Carlos Slim identified it as a key resource that helped him anticipate the future.If you're fascinated by culture and want to understand the strange, fast-paced compression of modern life, this book is essential.

I wanted to read it again, because I read it when it first came out and wanted to know if anything came out as the author envisioned. Some things were uncannily accurate and some just strange. Some things he didn't emphasize much, like the environment and women's rights. Some sexist attitudes were apparent, probably without the author even realizing it. Some areas we have not progressed as far as he thought we would, such as transportation. If you remember the times, or if you read it when it came out in 1970, you may like to read it. Or even if you're just curious.

This is a visionary work of literature, that was written in 1970. What is amazing is the realities of today that this author has so accurately captured 40 years ago. The book anticipated what we are facing today, an accelerated rate of changes in technology.Every couple of months, as you may now be aware, CPU chip speeds in desktop and laptop computers keep increasing. Staying on the cutting edge of technology is almost a full-time job. Next we are faced with an ever-changing cellular phone and MP3 player product range. Now, even the way we read books is changing with things like the ipad and the kindle. Where will this all end? Do we have to keep running just to keep pace with what's happening? The Internet and the dramatic impact that this has made, may not even have been fully envisioned by this author, but it is here and evolving at its own rate, making the earth a global village.Mr. Toffler attacks this problem in Six Parts as follows:- The Death of Permanence- Transience- Novelty- Diversity- The Limits of Adaptability- Strategies for SurvivalIn the end, each of us must formulate our own strategies for this rapidly and ever changing world that we now live in. This author, has given some clinical and effective methods that we can tailor to our own personal situation. We must all continue to adjust or run the risk of being left behind and becoming 'obsolete'.

The book was described in good condition, and it was in great condition. Yes, it was used, but the book showed aging with the frayed corners. The book came with the original cover in perfect condition making me wonder if the book was ever read. If it were, it was not read many times. You can trust this person.

I first read this book in 1974, and have continuously referred to its ideas in thought and conversation ever since. I wanted to re-read and up-date my memory of its concepts over the holidays. If anything I found Toffler to be even more relevant today than when he first published his book. I only wish that he would re-write his book up-dating his ideas with the novelties like the personal computer, the internet, social media, and the smart phone, which he implicitly predicted and which today act as change agents for more accelerated change.

It's been several years since I read this book, but I can vividly recall that moment when I smacked my forehead and said, "WOW." Mr. Toffler had expertly brought me to a level of consciousness about something that was "right there - in front of me." I am still struck by how well this book and its followers have taken the complications contained within the history of humankind and pointed out the lessons from which we can benefit by anticipating the next wave.

I love the book (so far). It was supposed to be delivered on May 24, but was delivered on May 29. Also, the paper it's printed on is super cheap gray dime-store-novelette type paper. It's totally unacceptable for a "library" edition. I had planned to give it to a local library when I was finished -- returned it instead. Found a paperback copy at a local store instead.

Bill Simmons has written that this is "the greatest sports book ever written" and he provided the introduction to this paperback edition. I have a hard time with hyperbole, but I am willing to argue that David Halberstam is among the best and most accomplished ("best and the brightest") of people who have written a sports book. Mr. Halberstam has authored 3 books on baseball (Summer of 49, October 1964, The Teammates), 2 on basketball (this and Playing for Keeps (a fantastic Michael Jordan book)), and one on football (The Education of a Coach). All are excellent.Mr. Halberstam won a pulitzer prize for his reporting on the Vietnam War for the New York Times. He has written extensively on the Civil Rights movement and on a variety of aspects about the second half of the 20th century. Mr. Halberstam has the rare ability to fill his pages with well researched information and still have his writing be light and easy to read.This 450+ page book is ostensibly about the 1979-80 Portland Trailblazers (it was notably Magic Johnson and Larry Bird's rookie year), yet it covers a number of players and coaches from the previous 20 years in depth. It spends a decent amount of time covering Portland's magical 1977 title run and the ephemeral wizardry of Bill Walton. The red-headed center had signed with San Diego before the 79-80 season, but Halberstam covered his progress that season as well. This book contains several 20 minute stories of a variety of individuals, including the owner, GM, coach, assistant coach, stars, role players, cast-offs, hold-outs, rookies and opposing players. The story of Kermit Washington (and Pete Newell) is handled with particular skill.Halberstam also weaves in his strong understanding of economics, race, the effects of television, and American politics to paint a complete illustration about the state of basketball in 1980. Again, I can't stress enough the absolute mastery of writing that the author possesses. While I refuse to say it is the greatest sports book every written, I am fine with acknowledging that it should be in every conversation.

The 1977 Portland Trail Blazers were one of the more memorable teams to win a title and then not successfully defend their crown. The squad's unselfishness and team play during its championship run thrilled basketball purists, and many fans across the country believed more championships were on the way for the Blazers. Instead, Portland fell prey to the major pitfalls that can unravel a championship team, and by the third year following their magic season they had a losing record and barely made the playoffs. Famed author David Halberstam chronicles that 1979-80 season in "The Breaks of the Game."Blazers head coach Jack Ramsay is considered one of the best coaches in the history of the NBA and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame, but he had his work cut out for him in the seasons following the 1977 championship in trying to lead a declining team. Injuries, player selfishness due to no-cut contracts, salary complaints, team chemistry problems, and the diminishment of the power a coach had in regard to his team all made their presence felt in Portland in the late Seventies.Halberstam profiles Ramsay and the important players on the 1979-80 Portland squad in the course of the book, as well as some of the other key figures in the league such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Red Auerbach. Bill Walton meant as much as anyone to the '77 team, and the author recalls how injuries and other struggles led to his falling out with the franchise and departure to San Diego in 1979.The author looks at many issues, some topical and others timeless, that were affecting the NBA in the late Seventies such as race, team chemistry, the business side of pro basketball, drugs, trade and contract rumors, important but unsung players, television and television advertising, and the relationship of college basketball to the pro game. Halberstam describes how the league was in trouble when he wrote, to the extent that the Finals that year between the Lakers and 76ers were tape-delayed, but later in the 1980s the league enjoyed a boom in popularity that finally gained it a wide, enthusiastic following across the country.Longtime followers of the league will note that the problems of NBA overexpansion and the wave of similar, cookie-cutter arenas that Halberstam decried in "Breaks" repeated themselves in the late Eighties and early Nineties. Another constant of the NBA across the decades that Halberstam broaches which overexpansion has just made worse has been that of the top half-dozen or so teams being highly watchable and the bottom half of the league distinctly uninteresting, save for a period in the mid-to-late Eighties when about two-thirds of the teams were compelling.Through Halberstam's description of the ups and downs of an 82-game regular season and one-miniseries-and-done playoff run of a declined team like the 1979-80 Trail Blazers, basketball fans get a more realistic picture of what NBA life is like for most teams than they do by reading one of the many books written about teams that won titles. The forward by Bill Simmons rightly notes that this is one of the best basketball books ever, and "The Breaks of the Game" is one of the premier case studies of how precarious success is for pro basketball teams and how quickly franchises can fall.

Halbertsam, famous for his pulitzer prize wining reporting in Vietnam, follows the Portland Trail Blazers for a whole season. The team two years removed from their championship victory over the Sixers is struggling to survive the loss of the gifted Bill Walton to free agency. The playoffs and even a winning record are not guaranteed. But the real beauty of the book is not the drama of the Portland team but the changing nature of the NBA in general. Halberstam is writing in 1980. He cannot see that Magic and Bird will change the league and make it both popular and profitable. That is part of the beauty of this narrative; It is trapped in time. At the very end of the book, the owner of the San Diego Clippers decides to sell the team because, with Bill Walton injured he cannot make any money. He sells the team to a local real estate agent named Donald Sterling for 13.5 millions dollars. This is told without any irony because it was written in 1981.This is the last Halberstam book I will read. I have read just about everything he has written and I was deeply saddened by this death. He has long been one of my favorite authors. But the cadence of his words becomes painfully predictable in this book. I will need a long fast before I can appreciate it again. (less)

It is well written, engaging, and very useful in all respects.

this has become my early morning "read" on many days...i can handle only several pages worth though...what he says and the way he says it has really brought me to having quite a thoughtful look back over my life...what i've done...what i've chosen...the way i've been...it's been a little unnerving at times...i have a lot to look back over...for me, it is a very important book to be reading right now...i'm drawn back to it again and again as the days pass by...often, i re-read sections to hear it again...get it more clearly...take it in...it's proving to be quite the source of therapy for my soul, which is very important at age 79 and a fella is wondering a bit, did i do ok? and more deeply still, what was it all about?.......and maybe deeper still, who am i now.......really? i highly recommend this little volume if your soul needs some searching too!

It is too bad that many folks will discount this book because it is (was) written by a psychiatrist. It is equally bad that many Protestants will avoid the book because of its Catholic heritage. I believe that even worse still, there will be those who miss the wisdom inside the pages of this book, who could benefit from the guidance and spiritual insight during their seasons of the dark night."At the outset I must confess that I am no longer very good at telling the difference between good things and bad things." -The Dark Night of the Soul; Gerald May, M.D.I rather wish the title of this book had been different. I think it gives a false impression of what the subject really explores; although, it does address the dark night of the soul. May uses the backdrop of the writings from St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross to lay his foundation for his exploration of the phenomenon of the "dark night" or spiritual darkness (which might also be known as spiritual awakening or enlightenment). I have read quite extensively from both Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Their writings can be something of a bit archaic depending on the translation and they can be somewhat romanticized within the context of their poetic settings. I say this to make a point that they can sometimes be difficult to completely understand. Despite his academic and clinical background, Dr. May writes clearly and in a very personal voice that I find very easy to grasp. His writing is warm, friendly, and very down-to-earth. He takes complex ideas and difficult situations and makes easy conversation with them. Not only was I enlightened by what I read, I was also comforted by someone whom I believe shared understanding of my circumstances and experiences.What might be the greatest contribution of this book in my opinion is the synergy that Dr. May creates between the spirit and the psyche... perhaps another way of saying this is the convergence of the soul and the spirit. While some voices would discount the science of psychology, I believe it is helpful for us to understand the workings of the mind and soul. God instructs us to love Him with all our "heart, soul, mind, and strength." It is obvious then, we should pay attention to these various facets that make up the essence of human beings. It is my opinion that Gerald May handles this material with humility and reverence, which helps in bringing attention to the work of God in the process of the dark night. It might be for this reason that I most liked chapter five, Three Signs and Three Spirits, where May teaches at length about the psychology of the dark night... very, very good instruction here."As John makes clear, it is not God who disappears, but only our concepts, images, and sensations of God." -The Dark Night of the Soul; Gerald May (p.146)Another very helpful chapter to me was chapter six, The Dark Night Today, where May discusses the dark night in modern contexts. While there is no substitute for reading the translated original writings from John and Teresa, Dr. May's exploration is arguably one of the best companion guides I have read to date and I have several expositions on the writings of Teresa and John in my personal library.The book includes a very well annotated notes section and an exhaustive index at the end of the book. Personally, I think this is a book every Christian should read and I am very glad I did.

The dark night and related soul transformation was an unfamiliar school of thought to me. Through his experience with psychiatric practices and psychological therapy, Dr May discusses meditation and contemplation and it's role in our spiritual journeys from darkness into light. This book draws from many rich sources of research, writings, and spiritual oracles and leaders. I highly recommend this to anyone unfamiliar with the dark night, or Teresa or John, or who desire to know more about related spiritual contemplation and healing.

A deeply insightful book. Mr. May illuminates the concept of "Dark Night of the Soul" as defined in classic Christian literature. Even more important and valuable though, at least to me, is that he makes the core concept and inherent confusion about these times in our lives simpler to grasp, and thus easier to accept. This was one of those books that made me stop every few pages, wipe off a few tears, take a few deep breaths, and burrow into it again. His gentle, conscious writing style is much appreciated, as is the logic and heart with which he makes the case. I bought two copies for friends already!

May's The Dark Night of the Soul is remarkable. To me and my spouse, May's book is a perfect combination of psychiatrist's perspective transposed over a spiritual experience. I really appreciate May's "interpretation" of John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila's seminal works. I have tried to read some of their original writings - along with other Christian mystics - and the ancient grammar, syntax and vocabulary make their works less than convenient for the modern reader to sort through. May has done all the sorting and more; making their immensely wise observations of the dark night, perceptible and recognizable. I also noted May's important distinction - apart from other writer's of The Dark Night - that dark night is not usually a single event, but more likely an ongoing experience of spiritual encounter with God.

OH, this book is so great! I have turned back to it time and time again. It is not just a one time read - it continues to edify throughout all stages of spiritual growth. If you are already acquainted with St John of The Cross and basics of Christian mysticism and looking for some much needed insight into how to make sense of confusing battles and struggles within your soul - this book will be a BLESSING to you! I am very thankful to have found this book.
