Very lovely introduction to Quaker faith and practice, written in a personal manner, with helpful stories and examples from the writer's spiritual journey.
I like this book very much as a useful teaching aid. I purchased it on the recommendation of the PYM website, and I was not mistaken in doing so. Our large and changing suburban Maryland meeting, Sandy Spring MM, has had a large influx of people new to Quakerism and the Society of Friends, and often in real need of better, more clearly delineated guidance than they get fro casual talks at coffee hour. This book is very helpful and fairly readable.
My monthly meeting (Quaker) is reading this as a group. It's an easily read, informal selection of letters explaining Quakerism. It is great for those new to Friends and it has led to interesting discussions among all of us.
Innocent style writing. A good Quaker buddy for new seekers
The content is rich and easy to read as a letter-to-a-friend. From the opening scene at Union Station in DC, the author hit a comfortable, conversational explanation of what it means to be a Quaker in the 21st century. There was enough history to explain preconceived notions, providing enough substance to sort out the reality from lore.
Simple, direct and informative. I appreciate the lack of jargon and the openness of the explanations of this faith. Worth the read.
I wish I had read this book before I attended my first Quaker meeting. I would have felt like an insider so much more quickly! By telling his own stories -- including how he first went to a Friends meeting when he was 13, after the Boy Scouts kicked him out for standing in a peace vigil -- the author gives a very personal, first hand account of what Quakers are like in the 21st century, what he values about being part of the Quaker world, and what four and a half decades of Quaker participation have been like for him. Even though it is just one person's story, the book is a very good overall introduction to Quaker principles and practices, and pretty inspirational spiritually.
