Review

“Modern Americans, bombarded with stories of celebrity divorces, probably assume that the tabloid breakup is a recent phenomenon. This lively, well-written and engrossing tale proves them wrong.”—The New York Times Book Review“Woo captures the drama and many ironies of Eunice’s story, admiring her courage without adopting her view of the Shakers as unmitigated villains.”—The New Yorker“Provocative…Woo vividly tells the story of the Chapmans’ broken family, beginning with a dramatic sentence worthy of Stephen King…Woo tells [this story] in nuanced and absorbing detail.”—Elaine Showalter, The Washington Post“Ilyon Woo’s The Great Divorce is much more than a fascinating account of a woman’s trailblazing battle for her children. By delving so deeply into the sources, Woo brings the past to life in all its wonderful strangeness, complexity, and verve. This is what history is all about.”—Nathaniel Philbrick, author of the National Book Award-winning In the Heart of the Sea“Ilyon Woo has taken the stuff of obscure history and transformed it into a gripping drama that resonates with our own world. Though she lived in the 19th century, Eunice Chapman reminded me of Erin Brockovich—a woman on a mission who fights like a tigress for what she believes in. Woo has an eye for the telling detail, and a prose style as elegantly spare as a Shaker chair. The result is a heart-warming, finely written story of one woman's battle against fanaticism, a story that has particular resonance today.”—Simon Worrall, author of The Poet and the Murderer“American history, law, religion, and politics all come alive in this poignant account of an abandoned woman’s rescue of her children in the first decades of the nineteenth century. Ilyon Woo gives us the unfolding drama of the first and only legislative divorce in the history of New York as part of a larger struggle for civil identity and women’s rights. It is not enough to say that this story of Eunice Chapman’s fight against injustice is well told. Ilyon Woo tells a story that every American should want to read.”—Robert A. Ferguson, George Edward Woodberry Professor of Law, Literature, and Criticism, Columbia University and author of The American Enlightenment, 1750-1820“A gripping read. Ilyon Woo is a scholar who draws on an impressive array of primary sources, but her lively prose is anything but scholarly. That Woo succeeds in making the reader sympathize with Eunice Chapman is not surprising; that she also makes the reader feel empathy for the Shakers and the troubled James Chapman is a measure of her masterful and sensitive storytelling.”— Glendyne Wergland, author of One Shaker Life: Isaac Newton Youngs, 1793-1865“Ilyon Woo presents the earliest child custody laws of this country with vivid relevance…[Woo] creates a tactile portrait of life nearly 200 years ago…both legal and feminist details are fascinating…Eunice has all the splash and charisma of a modern celebrity.”—Holly Silva, St. Louis Post-Dispatch“A myth-smashing tale…It would have been easy to tell this story as a polemic or a melodrama, but Woo never lets us settle into mere indignation or pity.”—Anne Trubek, The Barnes & Noble Review“This biography makes a movie-worthy story of [Chapman’s] struggle to reclaim her children and her destiny.”—Meredith Maran, More“In addition to providing an enthralling account of Eunice’s early life, marriage, and legislative campaign, woo offers a detailed look at the Shakers’ communal way of life. . .Woo writes with verve.”—Pamela H. Sacks, Worcester Telegram & Gazette“This is a true story of losses, but also a momentous emancipation, and what it took to get there. . . [Woo] is a wonderful resource to us today. . .Near the end, in the climax of the story, I felt as if I was gaining the kind of truth and wisdom that comes more often from a novel.”—David Ritchie, Brattleboro Reformer“Woo gives an interesting, and at times gripping, step-by-step account of the drama, capturing the various personalities involved, the issues at the heart of the conflict, and the far-reaching political and social ramifications of the legislation. . . the challenge of the historical nonfiction genre is to give life to facts and to create an engaging story, in which nothing can be made up or embellish. Woo does an excellent job of meeting both those challenges.”—Carlene Phillips, The Harvard Press“A smoothly narrative and revealing debut…Full of information about women’s lives and status at the time, the book makes the case that Eunice’s charisma and obsessive determination helped her overcome the usual rejection of women in the public sphere. Both Eunice’s struggle and the Shakers’ story fascinate equally while dispelling romanticized myths of utopian societies in the tumultuous postrevolutionary period.”—Publishers Weekly"A writer of extraordinary empathy and great resourcefulness, Ilyon Woo has transformed a neglected historical record into a vivid evocation of an era and an amazing tribute to a remarkably tenacious woman, Eunice Chapman. Meticulously researched and compellingly narrated, The Great Divorce will stand in the pantheon of American women’s history writing."—John Matteson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Eden’s Outcasts“The Great Divorce is a superb book—masterfully written, deeply suspenseful, and filled with fascinating facts and insights. American history would be everyone’s favorite subject if more historians wrote like this. Woo is a writer to watch.”—Debby Applegate, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher“The Great Divorce is a riveting tale of betrayal and redemption. Ilyon Woo’s story of Eunice Chapman’s desperate legal struggle to retrieve her children from the Shakers brings early nineteenth-century America alive. Woo blends a thorough knowledge of the era with a novelist’s eye for character and place to make us understand how one woman could wage such an epic battle and why we should know about her crusade.”—Michael Grossberg, Sally M. Reahard Professor of History & Professor of Law, Indiana University, and author of Governing the Hearth: Law and the Family in Nineteenth-Century America

Of how many impeccably researched histories can it be said, "I couldn't put it down!" Illyon Woo has meticulously pieced together mostly original sources into a book that has the sweep and pace of great drama. She does not invent, but has sources for details right down to the weather and the condition of roads. (I know this because I read both her Sources and Acknowlegdments sections, so curious was I about her methods and so reluctant was I to let go of this book!) As for the story told, it is an extraordinary commentary on the roles and rights of women, the struggle of a new nation to create and then bend and amend its laws, the power of marketing (yes, even in the early 19th century), and the peculiar nature of Shaker culture. Woo says in her Epilogue that the sui generis nature of Eunice Chapman's story has made it a footnote to legal history. But Woo rescues the footnote, showing how both the Shakers and Eunice's struggle against them were peculiarly American, and can tell us much about how we - American women and men of all religious stripes - live today. And why. Whatever Woo writes next, I'm there.

I am a history junkie. I especially enjoy works that give a rich, full flavor of a time as well as presenting different views of the same event. This book delivers nicely on both counts, relating the atmosphere in New York State and the country in the early 1800's, especially in regards to religion, the condition of women, and women's rights. The centerpiece is one womans battle to regain her children, who had been spirited away by her husband. At a time when a woman had little recourse against those that harmed or mistreated her, Eunice Chapmans battle was an amazing one. What could have been a small family drama escalated into a war that caught up politicians, lawyers, the Shaker religion and such luminaries as Martin Van Buren and Thomas Jefferson. All that aside, the author makes the book highly accessible to the reader, writing in an engaging style that makes this a page-turning historical mystery. It is just plain great storytelling!

I would recommend this to people who like reading historical books. In thisday and age - we tend to forget how things were "in the day" - I am a child ofthe 1950's and can remember how scandalous divorce and pregnancy out ofwedlock were - not that long ago! I feel that our female population doesn't reallyunderstand the progress that has been made in our rights. In this day and ageit is a given that the mother will get custody of children...this wasn't always thecase.... I really enjoyed the book - hope others will also.

Ilyon Woo tells the story of Eunice Chapman, who fought to regain custody of her children and some control of her own fate, when her husband joined the Shakers in the early 1800s in New York state.Woo presents her detailed research into the Shaker communities and the life of the Chapman family in a readable, riveting story. Her prose is always grounded in fact and the footnotes are available for checking her sources.Woo was able to present both sides of the conflict evenly and fairly. She set the whole situation into the cultural context of the day with clarity and insight into the biases and advances of the Shakers and the complex personalities of the main characters. She doesn't whitewash anything, but tries to tell as complete a story as the evidence will support. The book is also full of interesting details about the Shaker's theology and way of life, beyond the plain facts that they lived simply in sex-segregated communities.

"The Great Divorce" is an interesting book that lifts what might otherwise be (as the author acknowledges) a footnote in history to a fully told tale. The story of the miserable marriage of Eunice and James Chapman and of her fight to reclaim her children when her husband joins a Shaker community is thoroughly researched. Through this family, Woo examines early 19th century divorce and custody laws and also gives a full and sympathetic picture of the orderly Shaker communities that were roiled by the fierce battle for custody of the three young Chapman children. The story has a contemporary feel, as it was all too easy then, as now, to incite public antipathy, even mob action, against a little understood and sometimes unpopular religion. Another contemporary aspect is also evident: what to do when one parent joins a religious sect and takes the children with him or her?Woo set out to make this tale, whose bizarre turns titillated newspaper readers in the second decade of the 19th century, one that would appeal to a general audience, as well as an academic one. In this, she is less successful. Sometimes she conjures up the thoughts that Eunice Chapman might have been thinking, given her circumstances, although Eunice is such an odd (and often unappealing) individual that these passages seem contrived. No more successful are Woo's attempts to present Eunice as a kind of early feminist, although the issues this determined and single-minded woman raised certainly shone a (brief) light on the status of women in this period.Read "The Great Divorce" for the entertaining historical footnote that it is. As for unhappy marriages where we ARE drawn in to what a woman might be thinking and feeling---perhaps this is best left to the 19th century novelists, Chopin, Eliot, James, and Dreiser among them.M. Feldman

A deceptively easy read, but thought provoking. One almost immediately sympathizes with both Eunice and her husband James, if for different reasons. Opens a window on early 19th century life in America. Unlike similar works that strive to be scholarly and pretentious, this is a good old fashioned story that happens to be true.

Very historic, a good book

The astonishing voyage of the first solo crossing of Antarctica by the unlikeliest of arctic explorers.By the 1930s, no one had yet crossed Antarctica, and its vast interior remained a mystery frozen in time. Hoping to write his name in the history books, wealthy American Lincoln Ellsworth announced he would fly across the unexplored continent. And to honor his hero, Wyatt Earp, he would carry his gun belt on the flight. The main obstacles to Ellsworth’s ambition were numerous: he didn’t like the cold, he avoided physical work, and he couldn’t navigate. Consequently, he hired the experienced Australian explorer, Sir Hubert Wilkins, to organize the expedition on his behalf. While Ellsworth battled depression and struggled to conceal his homosexuality, Wilkins purchased a ship, hired a crew, and ordered a revolutionary new airplane constructed. The Ellsworth Trans-Antarctic Expeditions became epics of misadventure, as competitors plotted to beat Ellsworth, pilots refused to fly, crews mutinied, and the ship was repeatedly trapped in the ice. Finally, in 1935, Ellsworth took off to fly from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea. A few hours after leaving, radio contact with him was lost and the world gave him up for dead. Antarctica’s Lost Aviator brings alive one of the strangest episodes in polar history, using previously unpublished diaries, correspondence, photographs, and film to reveal the amazing true story of the first crossing of Antarctica and how, against all odds, it was achieved by the unlikeliest of heroes.About the Author: Jeff Maynard's books include The Unseen Anzac, Wings of Ice, Niagara's Gold, and Divers in Time. He has written for television and is a book reviewer for the Melbourne Herald Sun. He is a member of the Explorers Club and a former President of the Historical Diving Society. This is his first book to be published in America.my thoughts4.5it took me a while to get into the story , but once i did i couldn't put it down, with that said i would like to Netgalley for letting me read and review it in change for my honest opinion

A history of polar exploration that principally chronicles the life and adventures of American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth, but also includes brief histories of those explorers who followed polar pioneers Ernest Shackelton, Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott. Jeff Maynard’s work is moving and fascinating on several different levels. The physical and technological challenges to successful North and South Pole exploration were daunting enough, but of course people will add their own complications and Maynard does an excellent job of recounting the personal and political issues which made conquering the final unknown land and ice masses of earth even more difficult and complex.Lincoln Ellsworth was a rich man by inheritance who featured a personality that most found insufferable. Rejected by his father because Lincoln had rejected the idea of assuming leadership of the father’s business empire, he sought to distinguish himself along paths of his own choosing. To a large extent, he bought his way into his adventures, but he was also possessed a vision for himself and a determination that periodically enabled him to pursue his ambitions of discovering and exploring the unknown. He would overcome both the myriad challenges of polar exploration and his own burdensome psychological quirks.Maynard has done an admirable job of not only recounting harrowing polar explorations in a most concise and lucid fashion, but he has also presented the complex personalities of Ellsworth and his chief rival, Richard Byrd, in a manner that enables the reader to draw his/her own conclusions regarding the merits and foibles of these two men. Ellsworth and Byrd were virtually opposite personality types: Ellsworth a painfully withdrawn introvert and Byrd, a flamboyant extrovert. Both were very well known and controversial figures in their own time, but today Byrd is a relatively well-known historical figure, while Ellsworth’s slide into obscurity began while he was still alive. Both men accomplished feats that remain astounding to this day, given the incredibly nightmarish polar conditions and technological limitations of the equipment then available. Neither man was above attempting to assume a lion’s share of whatever credit was available for their respective successes, which of course did not endear them to their expedition mates. The author relates the bitter rivalries between several other polar explorers and some of the chicanery employed by those competing for scarce resources and the glory of being first and foremost. We also read about acts of consummate bravery and selflessness such as Roald Amundsen’s attempt to locate and rescue Italian explorer Umberto Nobile and the crew of the Italia, an airship that had crashed during a flight over the North Pole. For me, what makes this book especially memorable is Maynard’s portrait of Lincoln Ellsworth: a driven dreamer of a man often tortured by indecision and a consequent crippling inertia; additionally he is afflicted with an emotional hermit personality that made him a severe trial to himself and others. The title literally relates to Ellsworth’s third attempt to fly across the South Polar continent, but I believe “lost” also refers to Ellsworth’s sense of self and additionally, his marginal historical position in the popular histories of polar exploration. Ellsworth’s internal battles seem no less fierce than his battles with the polar elements, although some of Ellsworth’s antics and bizarre peccadilloes are of the type that are humorous – as long as you were not there when he was going off. As for the judgment of history, Ellsworth deserves a better fate, but it seems pretty clear how circumstances (competing with better self-promoters) and his own predilection for alienating his contemporaries (who would often omit him from their own histories of polar exploration) have conspired to relegate him to the shadows of polar exploration, but this book should help correct this.Appendices include a lucid explanation of the navigational challenges faced by polar explorers during Ellsworth’s time and the mechanical devices and measurement techniques used to overcome them. Includes an index, notes and a bibliography. A must for all polar exploration enthusiasts.

We often forget how lucky we are to have GPS (and its World War II predecessor, LORAN). This book reminds readers of how challenging it was to navigate back in the 1930s, especially over an unexplored region such as Antarctica. The technical explanations, some of which are relegated to an appendix are good. The story is interesting and the persistence of the main characters is amazing. Four trips to Antarctica, each of which consumed an entire season. The risks taken are also breathtaking. It's a good story, especially if you're a pilot.

Good book. Well written. Good photos. Only two problems. He says in two places the Congressional Medal of Honor. The official name is the Medal of Honor. Even the Congressional Medal of honor society gets it wrong. The other is more serious. The map after page 139 is inadequate. I realize that the exact path of the flight depicted is unknown, but they do know the start and finish. How about a reasonable path?

You normally hear about the “main players” when it comes to polar exploration so this book was refreshing. Ellsworth and Wilkins were a great combination of dreamer and quiet achiever. The several attempts Ellsworth made to cross the Antarctic shows you how dangerous this environment was, and still is.

A CITY OWNED, Murder by Increments, an e-book published, copyright and written by OJ Modjeska (Obelia Modjeska). The author presents ‘a true story of Los Angeles’ Hillside Strangler’ – a series of grisly killings of young women by strangulation that plagued the city in the late seventies. It is a detailed recounting of the extensive and repetitive mismagement of interviews, assemblage of pertinent facts, and sharing of features by component and vying police investigative teams. The entire situation was exacerbated because many of the victims were prostitutes and a pervading sense that ‘such persons knew of the possible results’ placed finding the killer(s) not in the first level pf importance when crime was so rampant that the police already were overburdened. The increasing inclusion of young women not engaged in the profession finally did cause the city to almost assume a panic mode as the killer(s) continued unchecked. A break in the case only occurred later when similar murders occurred in a small town much further north with a dedicated police chief and police who were more focused and less burdened. Thus, facts were able to be assembled and shared among a smaller number of investigators who were more diligent. The story continues with a psychological evaluation of the perpetrator and then refers the reader to obtain the next volume to follow the ensuing trial.Discussion/Conclusion: The author is a professional historian and criminologist eminently qualified to provide the substance of this factually based presentation. As such, she has meticulously described the facts of the case as it developed and ran its course and even has provided the steps taken by the evaluating clinical psychologist to advance to the next step for the story. The material is well presented. Thus, if a reader is intrigued by such complete enumeration, this book definitely is for you. Regrettably, listing of such constant and repetitive professional incompetency at such length, although accurately presented and pertinent, became a little wearisome and immensely disappointing for this reader especially when the story concluded with no more than the first step of case closure being presented. Regrettably, this reviewer does not enjoy having only pieces of a story randomly presented in seemingly a serial format. Fortunately, if such a word can be applied to such a grisly story, media coverage of the Los Angeles case was wide, as may be expected. The many theories cited and discussions presented by the author as to whether the killer was one or two persons, whether there was actual police involvement and other pertinent questions and supposed ‘facts’ were recounted almost ad museum even on the east coast. Under the circumstances, this is a book that should have great appeal for readers who are younger than sixty plus years of age who find true crime tales fascinating, and fortunately do not mind having to read a story in segments. ‘Older’ readers will not be required to do so to discover the resolution of the case.

A City Owned: Murder by Increments Book One by OJ Modjeska tells of murder and mayhem in Los Angeles in the 1970's. This is a gritty retelling of several murders that took place in L.A. and focuses on the lack of police work at the time. A serial killer is on the loose, with bodies being scattered around here and there. Some are prostitutes, some are every day girls looking for their first big break. Some people are even going so far as to pose as cops, and murder young women. The author's voice is clear and distinct, recounting the real events of the time with clarity, highlighting the lack of cohesiveness among cooperating police departments. In addition, the details surroundings the societal changes that were taking place during that time were fascinating and accurate. It simply was the age of the serial killer, drugs running rampant, pornography, and prostitution. Few appeared to be safe in the environs of L.A. If you like real crimes stories, criminal history, and astute police and procedural observations, this book is for you. Highly recommend.

Because once again Lauren Wagner is portrayed as dating a married man. It is true, he had previously been married, but he and my sister were no longer involved romantically. They were friends. He worked for my father. My sister was well aware he was seeing my best friend...It is made to sound lurid and it just wasn't.The fact that this little tidbit is repeated as fact, again tells me this is basically a rehashing of Darcy O'Brien's book.Bob Grogan hurt Lauren's parents by allowing that I formation to be put out incorrectly...I stopped thinking of him kindly at that point. And, by the way, as her best friend, I can attest there was little her parents didn't know...there really want much TO know. She didn't do drugs, she didn't sleep around. She did t lis, cheat or steal. She was an eighteen year old girl, who was still in at ten o'clock in spite of a midnight curfew. As her dad said, she was a girl...just a girl.

A City Owned: Murder by Increments #1 by OJ Modjeska is the true story of the Hillside Strangler who plagued Los Angeles throughout the late 70s. The story is well researched and it is clear that the author has taken an extensive amount of time to conduct the necessary studies to make sure that every detail is fully explained. The author not only tells the story but also talks the reasons behind why so many mistakes were made by the police which kept the terror alive. Many of the women who were murdered were prostitutes, so the police turned somewhat of a blind eye on the situation because of the known risk that goes along with that line of work. At the same time, the police were already very overworked and understaffed so it was easy for details and leads to fall through the cracks. The editing was done very well on this piece of writing and it flows well from one section to the next. Fans of true crimes will enjoy this read as well as fans of history. Great job the author. Keep it up.

This story takes place in Los Angeles in the 70s and encompasses the murders of numerous young women. As the bodies of women are popping up all over, the police begin to search for the killer. This is a fascinating story that focus is on the murders and the inability of the police department to respond with the resources to quickly catch them. With two serial killers on the lose, the police will do everything they can to catch them and stop the body count. This is a very gripping story that had me turning the pages to find out what happens. Good characters and the author has vivid description ability. I would recommend this story to everyone who loves a thriller or a drama. Also a great read for those who like the gruesome killer story. Check it out folks. I'm looking forward to the next one.

This was a very short, extreamly general book on Mexico. I was looking for a book for my son so we could go over culture and places. This is a very short book with very few specifics on anything. I do not recommend this to anyone. It was very disappointing and definately not worth it.

The Millionaire MessengerBrendon Burchard was one of the first authors and self help personalities that I heeded on my road to self development and enhancement. I purchased all his books and often was on his youtube channel spending hours engulfed in his content. After being exposed to many other guru’s in the self help industry I can personally verify that Brendon is one of the select few that are authentic. While many look to this vocation as a source of quick money through the recycling of quotes and material, Brendon has a thirst to help.He uses his life experience as a testimonial for the endless possibilities there are; not having a great childhood or being fed with a silver spoon, having his life flash before his eyes in almost a life ending car crash, Brendon came from rock bottom and has implemented in his pages how others can do the same.He provides content on how to find and share your voice, the importance of your experiences and story and how you as a person matter. Though you may not want to use your experience to become a millionaire messenger he heightens the importance of your life, making you feel like you matter, as you do.His encouragement and humane awareness is rare in todays fast paced microwave society, consequently his content isn’t just something to make you feel good and than the next day you are clueless with what to do with your life; Brendon, wants you to become better. This read will be great for anyone having a hard time being themselves, anyone who wants to find purpose, and anyone who wants to share their story and hopefully becoming a millionaire in the process.

The book was okay. I read a lot of business, marketing and sales books so I have a lot to compare him to. He has some useful applicable ideas but he certainly did not invent the wheel. What bothered me most about the book is how he says that he is not bragging but he is, he is selling his products throughout the book and that should have been a mention at the end of the book and he puts down other coaches/mentors/motivational speakers - he does not mention names but it's a clear put down. Finally, I certainly do not appreciate paying for book that's a sales pitch. I would suggest that you borrow it from the library and if you find that you love it then you should purchase it. You may want to purchase it used - even though it takes a long time to arrive the condition of the used copy I received was quite good.

When I read a business book like this, I am NOT looking for the secret to success. I am reading to activate my mind. To think while reading. To apply while thinking. To just be open. The book gave me two ideas that generated revenue. It did not give me a step by step road map for me to travel, but I did not buy it for that. It has paid for itself a thousand times over (literally) with the ideas that came to me while reading it. That is how I use these types of books. Don't look for exact steps in any of these books, but clear your mind for the ideas thay may extract!

If you want to become a professional speaker, this should be your handbook. I have been a professional speaker for more than 20 years, traveling 200+ days a year worldwide, teaching to top companies and would be considered a highly successful professional speaker. The author of this book lays out exactly what it takes to achieve that level of success – he does not say will be easy, but he does tell you exactly what it will take if you truly want to be a high level motivational or inspirational speaker. I get many people every year that come up to me after one of my talks and say they want to be a professional speaker – I now tell them to just read this book – it has everything you need to know.

If you read this book with an open mind, you will find nuggets of information that can be incredibly helpful in the building of your business. The author, although very young, is inspiring on many levels. My issue is with his ultimate intention. He claims otherwise yet it is all about the money and living the life of a millionaire. He comes from ego which makes sense when you are only in your thirties. At this stage of my life, I prefer to find mentors who operate from the heart and are teaching the world to raise their vibration as opposed to making money off others charging extreme prices. Just because you can make thousands off of others doesn't mean you should. I take issue with his methods. Many readers will find this helpful if you can wade through the bull.

I read many of the negative reviews of this book and what struck me is the simple difference between those who see the glass as half empty vs. half full. I always wonder if negative reviewers read the entire book. Brendon Burchard's Millionaire Messenger is more than a foundational how-to; it's a message to all those starting out, or in the middle of their journey, to share their voice and make a difference. Sure, one could choose to be a nay-sayer, but that's what makes the difference between those who will leave their mark on this world, and those who won't. At the end of our life, whether your message is world wide reaching or much closer to home, this book is a call to action for all of us to find our voice, share it, and live our purpose. We may not ever reach Brendon's level of success but those who truly "get" this book aren't looking for a get rich endeavor, they want to know "did I live, did I love and did I matter"?

Direct and to the point. Brandon has a clear heart for sharing our heart's message. It made me cry when he said that out of all the major players that he had researched, the driving force behind sharing their message was an overwhelming sense of moral obligation. That's exactly how I feel. So excited for what God is doing in my life and would highly recommend this practical guide about making your message count and getting out there to the masses to help others.
