Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out

Review

Award-winning director and experienced improv instructor Mick Napier presents Improvise.: Scene from the Inside Out, now in an expanded and revised second edition with additional tips, tricks, and techniques as well as a full reproduction of Napier's web journal from his time directing "Paradigm Lost" for The Second City. Chapters teach the reader about the oft-misunderstood art of improvisation - creating performance art (comedy, drama, or what-have-you) on the spot with no script, whether by oneself or as part of a group. Topics covered include how to use context to one's advantage, two-person scenes, balanced large-cast scenes, advice for successful auditioning, solo exercises one can practice at home, and much more. Actors of all walks of life (whether their primary venue is improv-heavy or not) will directly benefit from Napier's expertise; comedian and talk show host Stephen Colbert certainly did, as he testifies in a brief yet hilarious foreword! --Midwest Book ReviewMick Napier's Improvise contains excellent examples of actual development of improvisational ideas, showing how dialogue can be improvised and developed with specificity. The Wizard of Oz example is often used, and makes it easy to identify with each of the techniques as they are introduced. The book contains many practical ideas throughout and the breadth of the book is excellent, especially for those who are serious about considering entering the world of improvisation professionally or even as a hobby. Further, audition techniques and a journal from his work with Second City take us into the real world of improvisational theater and help many who are interested in moving in that direction. Mick Napier has really created an exceptional handbook for improvisation. --Reader's FavoriteNapier, founder of Chicago's Annoyance Theater and a veteran Second City director, is the author of my favourite how-to improv book, Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out. --Chris Hannay, Improv Embassy, Ottowa, Canada

"Annoyance-Style Improv" is not what the general public pictures when the words "improvisational theater" come to mind, yet the Annoyance Theater and its alumni have had a grand impact on improv worldwide - an influence that is continuing to be felt well outside of Chicago. For most students of improv, "Impro" by Keith Johnstone is still considered the primary reference. Mick Napier has written a book that is arguably every bit as (or more) important. In a relatively short manual, Napier discusses how to create more natural work that breaks many of the traditional rules and conventions of improv and stands on its own.I have been producing and directing improvisational theater since 2004 and, for the past several years, this book has been required reading for every single person who has entered the group. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

So far I've read Chalma Halpern's "Truth in Comedy", Viola Spolin's "Improvisation for the Theater", Keith Johnstone's "Impro", and now this book, and I would say this one has the most useful information as far as *becoming a better stage improviser" goes. What I mean is that it is full of tips, advice, and useful things to consider, and seems meant for someone who has already knows a little bit about the BASICS. Mick Napier asks the reader to rethink some of the "rules" that the basic improv teaching lays down, while adding some important insights of his own.In this sense, I think that "Truth In Comedy" is the best INTRO to improv, for someone just starting out. Then, I'd recommend "Improvise: Scene From The Inside Out" as a necessary followup, and then Keith Johnstone's "Impro" as a whole new viewpoint and also a deeper insight into the philosophy of being in the moment. (By the way, I would avoid the Viola Spolin book - it's written in a strangely stilted, boring, hard-to-read style, and really contains no memorable information).Particularly useful in Napier's book are the "Exercises To Do At Home", which is something I've been looking for - most other books have exercises which are meant to be practiced in a group setting.I found the chapter on "Improvisation & the Second Law Of Thermodynamics" to be unnecessary though - it didn't really add anything and seemed to be sort of a weird tangent. Luckily, it's short.Anyhow, after reading this book I really do feel as if I understand a lot more about what separates a "great" improviser from a merely "good" one. Now comes the hard part - PRACTICING & GETTING UP THERE AND DOING IT!!!P.S. I was recommended this book by Dustin Sharpe, my Improv instructor at the Acting School of South Florida, and also a member of the awesome improv group Mod27. Thanks Dustin!

Really enjoyed this book, especially that it provides tangible exercises you can do with a group or individually, and provides concrete/real-life examples of dialogue and situations as examples. A very practical book for improvisers! I reference different parts of it often just to keep certain skills top-of-mind.

I've taken 4 levels of improv so far, so I'm at an intermediate level. This book contains specific exercises you can do, specific things you can try, specific advice you can apply, and specific things to think about - no fluff, just great writing. It's fun to read this book even if you don't need to improve your improv!

Great book. Different philosophy about improv than other books I've read on the subject. Great exercises you can do by yourself to improve your skills.

Mick Napier claims to not lay out any rules. Not strictly true, but the point holds: thinking about what to do and what not to do won't help you advance a scene. Napier's new rules and explanations should help anyone who's done some improvising, and knows the feeling of a scene never taking off. If you don't know that feeling, I'm not sure that this book will connect.I found 'Improvise' much more helpful than 'Truth in Comedy' for actual scene work and, as everyone notes, less preachy and self-congratulatory. That's not to say that 'Truth' isn't worth your time, just that if I had to pick only one it's this one. Also, Napier includes exercises that one person can do on their own, which I found very helpful. These are mainly oriented toward developing mental muscles that allow you to make bigger, quicker leaps in thought, and get comfortable with first thoughts and going with your gut. So, good exercises for just being a human.

This is my favorite book about improv. Mick Napier builds up improv with a deep understanding of humor, performance and the self. It's not about rules, it's about strategies, motivations and goals. He has a number of concrete exercises I use for myself and with students.

I've been needing to add improv skills to my acting resume for a while now, and had several books on my wish list. Then I got the chance to take a class, which recommended this book. Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out is quite possibly the only improv book I'll ever need!It is easy to read, explains "The Rules" clearly and also explains why _not_ to follow them (or at least get them out of your head), and I was able to put the suggestions to work in class straight away. The examples of good and bad improv scenes for each situation/suggestion make it clear that the death of improv is being in your head too much.I think even actors who go from the outside in for their characterizations will be able to follow and use this book, and I also believe that people with no acting or improv experience whatsoever will be able to skip the "bad" area of the improv meter and spend less time in the "dork" area before hitting the "great"!

A Man in Full: A Novel, by Tom Wolfe

Amazon.com Review

Ever since he published his classic 1972 essay "Why They Aren't Writing the Great American Novel Anymore," Tom Wolfe has made his fictional preferences loud and clear. For New Journalism's poster boy, minimalism is a wash, not to mention a failure of nerve. The real mission of the American writer is to produce fat novels of social observation--the sort of thing Balzac would be dishing up if he had made it into the Viagra era. Wolfe's manifesto would have had a hubristic ring if he hadn't actually delivered the goods in 1987 with The Bonfire of the Vanities. Now, more than a decade later, he's back with a second novel. Has the Man in White lived up to his own mission? On many counts, the answer would have to be yes. Like its predecessor, A Man in Full is a big-canvas work, in which a multitude of characters seems to be ascending or (rapidly) descending the greasy pole of social life: "In an era like this one," a character reminds us, "the twentieth century's fin de siècle, position was everything, and it was the hardest thing to get." Wolfe has changed terrain on us, to be sure. Instead of New York, the focus here is Atlanta, Georgia, where the struggle for turf and power is at least slightly patinated with Deep South gentility. The plot revolves around Charlie Croker, an egomaniacal good ol' boy with a crumbling real-estate empire on his hands. But Wolfe is no less attentive to a pair of supporting players: a downwardly mobile family man, Conrad Hensley, and Roger White II, an African American attorney at a white-shoe firm. What ultimately causes these subplots to converge--and threatens to ignite a racial firestorm in Atlanta--is the alleged rape of a society deb by Georgia Tech football star Fareek "The Cannon" Fanon. Of course, a detailed plot summary would be about as long as your average minimalist novel. Suffice it to say that A Man in Full is packed with the sort of splendid set pieces we've come to expect from Wolfe. A quail hunt on Charlie's 29,000-acre plantation, a stuffed-shirt evening at the symphony, a politically loaded press conference--the author assembles these scenes with contagious delight. The book is also very, very funny. The law firms, like upper-crust powerhouse Fogg Nackers Rendering & Lean, are straight out of Dickens, and Wolfe brings even his minor characters, like professional hick Opey McCorkle, to vivid life: In true Opey McCorkle fashion he had turned up for dinner wearing a plaid shirt, a plaid necktie, red felt suspenders, and a big old leather belt that went around his potbelly like something could hitch up a mule with, but for now he had cut off his usual torrent of orotund rhetoric mixed with Baker Countyisms. Readers in search of a kinder, gentler Wolfe may well be disappointed. Retaining the satirist's (necessary) superiority to his subject, he tends to lose his edge precisely when he's trying to move us. Still, when it comes to maximalist portraiture of the American scene--and to sheer, sentence-by-sentence amusement--1998 looks to be the year of the Wolfe, indeed. --James Marcus

From Publishers Weekly

However the National Book Award judges managed to get hold of Wolfe's much-delayed second novel in time to give it their nod as an NBA finalist, they were quite right to do so. It's a dazzling performance, offering a panoramic vision of America at the end of the 20th century that ranges with deceptive ease over our economic, political and racial hang-ups and at the same time maintains a brisk narrative pace that makes the huge book seem only a quarter of its real length. Balzac had the same gift. The "man in full" of the title (the phrase comes from an old song) is Charlie Croker, a good-ole-boy real-estate developer in Atlanta whose sprawling South Georgia plantation, massive mansion in the best part of town, half-empty skyscraper tower named after himself, horde of servants, fleet of jets and free-spending trophy second wife have left him terribly vulnerable to bankers deciding the party's over. As a former football star, however, the suggestion is put to him that there is something he can do to ease his situation. A black Georgia Tech player clearly headed for greatness may have raped the daughter of one of Charlie's old business buddies. If Charlie can help the city's ambitious black mayor maintain calm, the bank just might be persuaded to ease up on him. Three thousand miles away in California, Conrad Hensley, an idealistic young worker at a warehouse run by one of Charlie's subsidiary companies, fired in an offhand downsizing designed to placate the bank, runs afoul of the law in a farcical parking hassle and is thrown in jail. There, in fear of his life, Conrad absorbs Stoic philosophy from a book his wife has sent him, and, aided by a timely earthquake (sent by Zeus?), begins to turn his life around until the day, in exile in Atlanta, he encounters Charlie. These parallel plot lines, examining with microscopic precision the obsessions, preoccupations, habits and lingo of life at the top and bottom of American society, are both compelling in themselves and resonant with a sense of the vast mystery and comedy of contemporary life in this amazing country. Wolfe is as adept at scenes painted with high satirical glee (Charlie on a quail hunt, or introducing shrinking business guests to an all-out stud performance by a prize racehorse) as he is with horror and pity (his picture of life for Conrad in his California jail is almost unbearably intense). Despite the very occasional longeurs (readers learns more Atlanta geography than they may care to) and writerly tics (Wolfe still can't resist onomatopoetic outbursts), the novel is a major advance on The Bonfire of the Vanities in its range, power and compassion, while retaining all of that book's breathless contemporaneity and readability. 1.2 million firt printing; simultanneous audio from BDD.(Nov 6).Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I got this book for $1 at a Church Bazaar sale. Since I'd enjoyed Bonfire of the Vanities, I thought I'd give this a try. I postponed reading it because of its massive size. But when I finally dug in, it was hard to put the book down. This book was a LOT of fun to read! One of the two main characters was writ LARGE, because that fit his LARGE lifestyle. The other main character was subtle and intriguing, because that was HIS way of being. The way these two characters came to be together, and the result of that relationship is absolutely hilarious (if not altogether believable). I finish the book being very glad I'd invested the time to read it.

It’s been sometime between my last Tom Wolfe experience (hint-generally an “on the bus” person). This book makes me wonder if I’ve been “off the bus” far too long.Great summer read with memorable characters, adequate mysticism, interpersonal (and personal) conflicts set within the social and political flavor of the “modern” South, in a tale that only Tom Wolfe can fashion to make interesting for 700+ pages.

9.5/10A man converted to stoicism while in prison in Alameda County escapes during an earthquake which flattens the prison and proceeds to travel to Atlanta on the lam, where he in turn converts a bankrupt legendary real estate developer to stoicism as well. Said real estate developer is on the sidelines of a race riot in Atlanta (during the mayoral campaign) caused by a date rape accusation lodged against Georgia Tech's black All-American running back by the daughter of another legendary real estate developer. Stoicism in prison and in the boardroom, the timeless wisdom of Epictetus for all of us dispossessed slaves. Tom Wolfe does it again: I just wish he could have worked some Marcus Aurelius in.Recommended to anyone interested in philosophy, business, prison, or race. I don't know how Tom Wolfe gets this stuff by the censors.

Tom Wolfe knew how to write!I loved Bonfire of the Vanities. A Man In Full has a similar style and starts with similar themes but with emphasis on proud men (some decent, some not) straining against life’s limitations.I wrote “starts” because I had to put this down. Charlie “Cap’m” Croker is almost as despicable and entitled as a certain real life real estate developer we all know. And getting inside of his head and that of poor Conrad was too depressing.

Truthfully this is not my typical read. The detail is overwhelming at times and occasionally got bored. But the sheer beauty of the characters overwhelmed all the reasons why I shouldn’t like it.It compares favorably with “Catcher in the Rye” as a period piece that captures the mood of the time.Bravo!

The characters in the book were interesting and kept me interested in what would happen to them and why. Although a work of fiction nearly everything seemed possible and provided background information and insight into their development and connection. The book left me wanting to read a follow-up book involving the same characters.

There is no doubt that Tom Wolfe is one of the greatest writers on the American scene. This book contains fabulous characters and satire that bites so hard it leaves scars. Many parts of the book are uproariously funny. This novel is a superb vehicle for Wolfe to display his geniuse as a social commentator. A true iconoclast with x-ray vision, style and wit. It was laughable to read those critics who sneered that this book is not "great literature" and that "it won't be studied in literature classes". As one who has suffered through trash like "Slaughterhouse Five" in English courses, I would welcome a serious study Tom Wolfe's magnificent style and form. I think Wolfe has a great deal to teach any student of letters and even of rhetoric. I give the book four out of five stars for two reasons. First, I found the avalanche of bad language in the book very offensive. I don't speak that way, nor does my family, nor do my friends. Granted, it is the duty of the artist to hold a mirror up to the world to capture its reflection. And Wolfe's mirror is squeaky clean wihen it comes to showing us regretable traits of the age, especially the widespread use of swearing and obscenities. Howver, I still don't like reading it and wonder if the bad language was really necessary. Second, the ending is disappointing. There is something unconvincing and unsatisfactory about Croker's final "conversion.". That being said, I confess that if this roller-coaster of a novel would have gone on at the same clip for another 750 pages, I would have joyfully ridden it right to the end.

"This book is now on my list of required reading for all engineering students." IEEE Spectrum"...draws on examples from the 4th century BC onwards to identify common features in engineering failures, and offers guidance on how to avoid failure while encouraging innovation...extremely well documented and illustrated...can be read by all those interested in engineering, not just structural engineers." New Scientist"...nicely done and the case for using engineering history to comprehend the nature of design is well made...the general reader will be well served, especially because the case histories are so interesting and well presented in themselves..." Nature"...Petroski makes the case for investigating classic and historical case studies rather than recent design failures, the analysis of which is often complicated by ongoing litigation and distortions or, even more critically, by court-imposed secrecy...provides a cogent argument for reintroducing engineering history..." Robert Mark, School of Architecture, Princeton University, Science"...should be required reading for all engineering students and all practicing design professionals..." Journal of the Performance of Constructed Facilities"...discusses several models to explain how errors are introduced in design and how designers can prevent similar mistakes from occurring. Case studies present historic and recent examples of engineering failures..." Civil Engineering"...the anecdotal nature of the paradigms presented is intended to evoke associations with the real situations in which designers find themselves every day." Mechanical Engineering"...students of all branches of engineering can learn from the case studies presented. Not only engineering students but also practicing engineers will learn from the book." Choice"The intention of Petroski's book is to present an incontrovertible paradigmatic argument for the value of case histories, ranging from the ancient to the modern, in illuminating and elucidating the causes and results of human error in the design process, mostly of structures. The further stories, including those about many well-known bridge failures, will prove fascinating and intelligible to the non-technical reader." Times Higher Education Supplement"Highly recommended." ASME International

Book Description

From classical temples to twentieth century towers, engineers have learned more about design from failure than from success. By showing how errors were introduced and how they might be avoided, this book suggests how better design quality and reliability may be achieved.

Deals almost exclusively with structural engineering and even more specifically, bridges. Written in an academic style that is a tough slog. Illustrations are tiny and blurry (partly because they are mostly from very old texts). I came away with a deeper appreciation for Galileo, but other than that, pretty disappointed.

Not exactly what I expected. But interesting

Got this for my engineering 190 course on how errors and judgement's are how problems can be solved in the engineering world.

I read this book when it first came out in 1994, and have just finished re-reading it.I can attest that the lessons which emerge from Dr. Petroski's study of structural engineering failures have proved valuable throughout my career, particularly when designing bridges which pushed the envelope. Indeed, any engineer aiming to be innovative in any way needs to temper that laudable ambition with a serious and even somber study of how things have gone wrong in the past, and this book is an excellent vehicle for that purpose.Beyond the study of engineering failure, as a fringe benefit, the book also provides nice discussion of important episodes from the history of structural engineering. Such historical perspective is usually lacking among engineers both in practice and academia. Yet this is a subject which engineers would ideally be exposed to throughout their careers, not just during the leisurely and retrospective years of retirement. To give a balanced review, allow me to point out a few minor negatives. First, the writing style is sometimes a bit stuffy, and a more plainspoken style would have made the book more appealing. Second, there's a good bit of repetition throughout the book; shortening and focusing the book would have improved it. Third, the case studies mostly involve bridges; this will obviously please bridge engineers, but will reduce appeal for readers seeking a more diverse range of case studies. In sum however, the book is an excellent and valuable contribution from Dr. Petroski, and we should be especially thankful that it exists considering the lack of literature on this important topic, especially at a scholarly level.Highly recommended for bridge engineers and other structural engineers at all stages of their careers - indeed, a "must read."

This is the first Petroski book I've read. I was expecting something different. The cases are all valid design issues and are informative but there are too few. You have to dig through pages of lecture about how important engineering process is to get to the content of the case. It's repeated in each chapter. There is very little technical detail, just verbal explanations of failure types. As an old electronic engineer, I was hoping to learn something about civil engineering from this. It wasn't there. I do think engineering students need something to widen their viewpoints about design thinking. There's a learning curve of failed designs between school and proficiency. If I wrote a design process course, this would be the first 2 weeks reading. Then we'd get into the details. I can't say I'll read this again. But if I ran into an engineering student who didn't understand design process or why mistakes happen, I'd suggest it.

Many technical professionals (and others as well) think technology has the answers and the solutions to many of the issues / failures we have experienced in the past. WRONG!!Read this precious book to understand why.Although somewhat dated (considerting we are in 2006) - the basic tenets still apply. Be forewarned - you need to read it with an open mind and a willingness to be brutally honest about your answers when the author poses some questions to you. With such a paradigm, you will find the book full of value in understanding the types of errors we make as humans. Once you recognize these, preventing them can become feasible. But, just realizing that is not enough, you will need to change (which is very hard to do) some habits that the workplace has built into you over time.Enjoy - and be error free...if you can, if you care...

The Bling Dynasty: Why the Reign of Chinese Luxury Shoppers Has Only Just Begun (Wiley Finance), by Erwan Rambourg

Review

"China's volatile demand for luxury has left industry executives scratching their heads. How much longer will anti-corruption measures weigh on sales? Are Chinese becoming more value-driven as they travel more and more sophisticated? Ultimately, how should global luxury brands set their pricing, supply, store openings and digital strategy to capture Chinese consumers? The Bling Dynasty is an insightful read for luxury managers, consultants and anyone who wants to understand consumption trends and China's role in shaping them. As a former marketing manager in the industry, author Erwan Rambourg understands how the brands operate inside and out. As a co-head of global consumer and retail equity research at HSBC, he has taken his analytic depth to his first book, filing it with interesting numbers and interviews with executives. Mr. Rambourg has a unique background as a Frenchman growing up in the U.S. and being based in Hong Kong for the past 4 years has given him a front-seat view of how the Chinese consumers operate and a broad perspective of the often opaque global world of luxury." - Wei Gu, Wall Street Journal editor for China Wealth and Luxury “The Bling Dynasty puts doubters of China’s appetite for luxury goods to the back of the queue. Erwan Rambourg’s clever use of avatars to portray the true nature and extent of the huge desire for luxury goods in China makes this an informative but also easy read. It is a must for anyone hoping to understand what drives the consumers of the world's second largest economy. Rambourg, based in Hong Kong at HSBC, is one of the leading experts on the luxury goods sector and in The Bling Dynasty he successfully combines well researched data with access to the real shoppers on the street.” - Laura Chesters, business reporter and luxury goods specialist at London Evening Standard and The Independent “Erwan Rambourg adopts an engaging, conversational voice to explain the complexities of the Chinese market – as if inviting his readers to a dinner party at his Hong Kong flat. He answers the questions on so many minds with clear explanations peppered with parables, literary references, hard data and genuine, wide-eyed discovery.” - Miles Socha, European editor of Women’s Wear Daily “In this book Erwan Rambourg has managed to combine his vast knowledge of the luxury goods sector with ideas drawn from his personal experience as a westerner who has re-located to Hong Kong. The result is an interesting and entertaining viewpoint of the Chinese consumer and of the Luxury goods world in general. In a simple but efficient manner the book covers an important and current issue in a way which allows the reader to view the dynamics of the world of luxury goods from an unusual perspective. I particularly enjoyed being able to re-visit, through the book, some of the feelings that I have experienced during my many visits to Asia.” - Diego Della Valle, Tod’s Group Chairman and CEO “Erwan Rambourg knows the luxury goods industry inside out. His on-the-ground work in China yields deep insights into the mindset of the local consumer and a clear analysis of the unparalleled opportunities this market offers to attractive, global brands.” - Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, Chief Executive Officer HUGO BOSS AG “Erwan Rambourg is both a marketer, an analyst and a thinker and has used his broad experience of the luxury industry to write The Bling Dynasty a bit like an international correspondent. He's exploring China, the new Eldorado for Luxury and his inside knowledge and the focus on consumers have produced an analysis which is both sharp and concrete. A few memorable moments as well as a very personal touch make this book very informative and entertaining to read." - Francois Le Troquer, Executive Director Luxury Division, Watches of Switzerland - Mappin & Webb “China's middle class holds the key to the future of luxury.  Erwan Rambourg demonstrates this with extensive insights into both the luxury industry and what Chinese want.” - Francis Belin, Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, Swarovski Consumer Goods Business "Through first-hand knowledge and unique facts and anecdotes, The Bling Dynasty provides an in-depth analysis of one of the most important markets for luxury brands, China. Erwan shares his insights with incisive scrutiny and wit, and offers a unique perspective on a sector that is both abundantly discussed yet still filled with misconceptions.” - Ketty Pucci-Sisti Maisonrouge, Luxury Entrepreneur, Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, Associate Professor at IE Business School, author of The Luxury Alchemist “I have been speaking with Erwan Rambourg for years and have benefited considerably from his ideas. Anyone who wants to understand the luxury market must first understand the Chinese consumer. The Bling Dynasty is a must-read for investors, marketers, or anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the future of luxury in China.” - Robert Dunphy, Portfolio Manager, OppenheimerFunds

From the Inside Flap

WHY THE LUXURY MARKET’S FATE RESTS IN CHINESE WALLETS The media has negatively focused on the Chinese political administration clamping down on gifting. Observers have come to doubt the strength of Chinese consumption as the key driver for luxury. The Bling Dynasty illustrates how doubts about Chinese consumption are ill-founded and Chinese luxury demand is on the cusp of becoming dominant. This book contains the research and expert views companies need to understand and address the new challenges posed by this dominance. Each chapter brings a different perspective, covering complex aspects of luxury consumption, with illustrations and real-world examples that support the research. Readers will gain insights through interviews with brand executives, retailers, experts, and consumers. As an economic heavyweight, China is fast realizing its role in the luxury market. Chinese consumers should be accounting for more than a third of the global luxury market today, and half, if not more, in ten years’ time. The Bling Dynasty runs counter to the conventional wisdom that expanding sectors become more global. Luxury is actually becoming over-dependent on Chinese sales. Readers will: Understand how Western brands developed in Asia and the challenges they are met with, notably ubiquity Learn why Chinese are purchasing luxury items abroad and what it means for the future of the sector Gain insights on why there are no Chinese luxury brands challenging Western models Realize that Chinese consumers are becoming similar to their American peers and that luxury competition goes way beyond pre-conceptions

As an analyst who has been covering the luxury industry for the past six years, I have developed the highest respect for Erwan Ranbourg's expertise, well-reflected in this engaging book. From the rise of the aspirational consumer, to the effects of rising Chinese tourism, to the more recent Korean Wave, Rambourg hits all the major trends with well chosen examples. Underlying the short term ripples is the large demographic shift of Chinese citizens entering the middle class, brand-aware and social-media-savvy. Good summaries are at the end of each chapter, helpful if one wants to cite a point in a discussion!Highly recommended!

This book is a dynamic exploration of what China's consumer landscape is today. Interesting, colorful, and informative, Rambourg has found a way of communicating a business message using a voice that is compelling for the reader, regardless of their level of expertise. I loved how he delved deep into history and motivations of the Chinese consumer- unwrapping a cultural background that is so vastly different from the Western shopper, and so crucial to understand for any luxury retailer. As a business leader for a global luxury goods company, I found this book to be very impressive and have strongly recommended it to both senior leadership and retail arms of my company.

You don't have to be interested in China to want to read this book. You only need to be curious a bit about the past and/or especially the future. China's luxury consumers have played a role in each.

Ewan has written the ultimate guide for anyone interested in understanding, not only the luxury market and trends in China, but also the impact and influence of other regions in Asia. I also find insightful his views and analysis of the real global trends in luxury affecting all parts of the world - developed and emerging. His style is accessible and approachable, and should be read by all interested in the luxury market.

I have been working for and with consumer product and luxury companies in China for more than 12 years. Mr. Rambourg's book is an outstanding overview of the history, current state an future of the luxury industry in China and among Chinese speakers the world over. His long history in the luxury business combined with his time in Asia has brought to bear a book that long time China hands like myself as well as readers just starting to think about China a lot to think about. Most importantly of all, I learned new things about my business and my adopted 2nd home and I can't say that about all China related books I read.Michael Zakkour, Principal at Tompkins International and Author of "China's Super Consumers"

The one and only Erwan Rambourg could write a book on any topic: I will make sure to read it. I am not working in the luxury industry and yet found "the Bling Dynasty" highly relevant and insightful (my company makes high end precision optics instruments). It would be an understatement to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading Rambourg's book. It's extremely well documented, informative and witty. A fun and yet serious book to read. A+!

The best consumer insight book I've read in a long time. The author provides a thorough, methodical and entertaining reflection on the new Chinese consumers and their relationship with luxury. The style, both personal and sprinkled with anecdotes, contrasts pleasantly with the vast majority of business books. Waiting for part II !

A new Silk Road runs from west to east. For the past decade, luxury companies have rushed to cash in on China’s boom. But Erwan Rambourg’s prediction of the reign of Chinese shoppers is starting to look shaky just a few months after his “Bling Dynasty” hit bookshops.Rambourg, an HSBC analyst, is bullish about the country’s prospects despite what he calls near-term challenges. He says the sector is undergoing “a once-in-a-generation transformation; no other nationality will influence luxury consumption as much as the Chinese in our lifetime.”The United States was the top market for luxury in 2014 with 65 billion euros in sales, Bain & Co research shows. Japan was in the second spot, followed by Italy and France. China was fifth, with 15 billion euros of sales. But the ranking is deceptive as Chinese consumers shop abroad to avoid domestic taxes. They account for 29 percent of all global personal luxury sales and are propping up the market in Europe and the United States.Rambourg says the bulk of future growth will occur mechanically. Over the next 10 years, he predicts that the number of luxury consumers in the People’s Republic – broadly, anyone who earns more than $30,000 a year - will double from 75 million to 150 million, while spending should triple. In this scenario, the Chinese will dominate the global luxury industry. On paper, the figures back him up. China had 213 billionaires on the 2015 Forbes Billionaires List, second only to the United States. The exploding middle class points to a consumption bonanza. But the reality has become more complex since the book was published in October. Sales growth of luxury goods in mainland China turned negative for the first time in 2014, Bain research shows.Contrast this with Bain’s 2011 forecast for 30 percent sector growth and it’s clear just how much this former star market has dimmed. China’s 2014 GDP expansion of 7.4 percent was the country’s weakest since 1980 and spending by the super-wealthy on gift giving has fallen by a quarter.Luxury executives point to factors like China’s anti-corruption crackdown, which has made government officials reluctant to display ostentatious wealth. But certain brands have been unscathed, suggesting other factors are also at work.Ultra high-end labels like Hermes and Brunello Cucinelli are still seeing relatively strong sales. Meanwhile, “mega” brands that pursued breakneck expansion are faring less well. Prada pinned huge hopes on the Chinese market when it chose to list in Hong Kong rather than Italy in 2011. That bet has not come good yet. The Italian company’s sales in Greater China declined 7 percent in 2014. LVMH also reported negative sales in the region as Chinese consumers cooled towards flashier labels like its flagship Louis Vuitton brand.Contrast this with LVMH’s performance in the United States where annual revenue jumped 8 percent. The United States is surprisingly underpenetrated, accounting for a quarter of global GDP but only 15 percent of luxury consumption.Meanwhile, handbags and jewellery are facing increasing competition from high-end consumer electronics. The Hurun Research Institute’s latest report shows that Apple products became the luxury gift of choice in 2014, displacing Hermes which slipped to seventh place. Samsung also entered the top ten. Rambourg recognises this trend and says brands should be thinking more about “budget competition” from aspirational luxury labels and tech companies. He also makes a brief reference to how the country’s political history has shaped its luxury consumption. More detail about this fascinating topic would have given deeper insight than can be gleaned from cold data. After decades of Communist Party rule, how is the country figuring out what denotes status? How does this help explain volatile demand for western luxury goods that has at times flummoxed non-Chinese executives? The author doesn’t see Western luxury brands facing much local competition any time soon. For now, the “Made in China” label faces the biggest prejudice from Chinese consumers themselves. The Cultural Revolution undermined a history of refinement and craftsmanship, and domestic production is dominated by a mindset that meets expectations at low cost. But Rambourg could be underestimating a market that has evolved at breakneck speed. The country’s art sector already shows a nationalistic streak, with Chinese collectors preferring ancient calligraphy and native artifacts. There is no doubt that China will be a key market for luxury goods. But slowing sales and unpredictable consumption suggest luxury groups should be careful not to take the Bling Dynasty’s rise for granted.- Carol Ryan

This would only be helpful for someone who has a grip on the subject matter already and just needs practice ...just drills no teaching.

Great tutor and mentor for math. This book helps when others are not around to explain. Every student regardless of grade should have to learn or as a refresher.

bought for my 11 year old in sixth grade, to help with her math class this year. So far so good.

Great book if being used as a workbook. Don't expect to learn from it. Continue to look around

I am a senior and was looking for a way to check on my math memorizations and skills. This was the perfect book.

Retraining myself!!! I can now!!

I homeschool my 12 year old. This is a perfect brush up before pre-algebra. We have also done the Chris McMullen book Fractions - Add, Subtract,Multiply and Divide. In both books the lesson is explained simply and then it's all about repetition. They have both been EXTREMELY helpful to us. I am looking forward to doing one or two others in the series. Thanks for a great book!!

Bought to help a daughter in law to get her GED. Said she wanted it, but don't think she's ever if looked at it.
