This is not the standard walk through the facts of brain science that transits the hierarchy from molecules to brain in logical order. Rather, this book strikes me as an elaborate exercise based on the idea that talking about neuroscience is discussing a system that is trying to understand itself. The brain is the central entity that gives structure to reality, so this is the branch of science that is closest to a first-person perspective. Probably because of that, the topics presented are always punctuated by the author’s own peculiar intellectual itinerary and a disregard for traditional discipline boundaries, to the point that it is hard for moments to disentangle scientific knowledge from the collaborations and circumstances that generate it.In the end, the exposition benefits from the non-linear narrative, which allows the book to discover relationships between some concepts that as are relatively well known and many that don’t belong in more textbook-like readings. All of this comes seasoned with connections to philosophy, History or even chess or cooking, which I felt binds the contents and makes the book entertaining. Because of its peculiar nature, the stories here have something to offer to readers approaching brain science for the first time but also to those who think they have heard it all. Highly recommend!

Sigman is one of the grand practitioners of understanding how the mind actually works from careful and masterfully thought-out experiments. With this tiny book, Sigman demonstrates that he is not just one of the great scientists of the field, but also a lucid expositor who makes the intricacies and pitfalls of the subject. Highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to get past the "psych for the masses" into understanding the real problems and dilemmas.

This is a great beautifully written book that illuminates the latest discoveries of Neuroscience in a very personal and anecdotical way. This thanks to the fact that the author is a well known researcher telling the story of his own discoveries and collaborations. One amazing example explaining the relationship between brain and mind is how very often the brain detects events before the minds is conscious of them. Only modern neuroscience and its technological improvements makes this possible. The book furthermore has a long discussion about learning in infants and bilingualism, which I was particularly fond of given that my toddler is learning 4 languages!

About the Author

Justin Roethlingshoefer is the strength and performance coach for the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League. He supervises the club’s strength and conditioning program for all players. Justin has a Bachelor of Science in Movement Science from Westfield State University and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Louisville and is a certified strength and conditioning coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He founded The Hockey Summit, an all-inclusive training camp for professional hockey players utilizing the same techniques in this book. Devan McConnell is the head of hockey performance at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. In this role, he is responsible for the oversight and development of all aspects of physical development for the ice hockey team. Devan earned his Bachelor of Science at Fitchburg State University, specifically in Exercise & Sport Science and Clinical Exercise Physiology. good intel from 2 coaches on the front lines! Well written and pretty simple. As a 20+ year endurance sports coach, nothing was earth shattering to me or "new" per se. but it's GREAT to see stick and ball based performance coaches embracing some of the easy to use technology available these days to monitor athletes.

I am a former exercise physiology major @ UMass Lowell and I interned with Devan throughout my junior and senior year. The amount of knowledge and practical experience I gained from him was insurmountable and he is by far one of my biggest mentors, someone I respect, and someone I know truly cares about not only his athletes, but the current/future eras of sport science. From someone who has been fortunate enough to see the cutting edge technology, methods of application, and evidence-based training that this book exhibits in person, this is a must buy and a must read. Sport coaches, you will gain valuable in-sight on current research that many aware even existed. Strength coaches, you will be informed on the most recent methods of things like data tracking, programming, and cutting edge research that is not necessarily found unless searched for. Players, you will be taken on a behind the scenes look as to what goes into planning and implementing one of your typical days whether it be practice or game, in-season or off-season and most of all, you will learn how to take care of your bodies with effectively/properly.

The layout of this book allows for a quick read that can be easily understood by sports performance coaches and sport specific coaches with no background in sports science. Great book. Being a military officer, I've read a lot of of books on Strategy. I think the book is misnamed, it is really a primer on game theory. What is the difference between Game Theory and Strategy you ask? Game theory is primarily mathematical. It uses math to guide decision-making. If you have good data on probabilities of different courses of action or a reasonably bounded problem, game theory is extremely helpful. Strategy, as the book title suggests, is more of an art when you don't have a lot of data on probability. I found this book was really good when thinking through decisions a coach or manager would make in sports, such as when to go for two-points instead of one, how to decide which way to kick on a penalty kick. Some great insights here. As an example, one of the insights from the book is that if your opponent would gain an advantage if they knew your course of action ahead of time, there is an advantage to you to include some level of randomness in your decision-making. It uses the example of a penalty kick in soccer. Even if you're better kicking to the right, if the goalkeeper knows ahead of time which way you will kick, your chances of scoring a goal will decrease. You can increase your chance of scoring by randomly deciding to kick to the left some percentage (here is where the math kicks in) even through you aren't as good kicking to the left. Same would apply to a football team on the goal line. Even if you are much better running the ball, you will have a better chance of scoring touchdowns if you throw the ball a certain percentage of the time. Again, the math proves this even if you aren't a believer.

Game theory will never achieve the status of a science because we are always dealing with people who are unique, and are driven by values, aspirations, and more, rather than by a set of universal rules.Game theory is a relatively young discipline, but has already gathered many useful insights for decision-making and practical strategy. The use of the word “game”, highlights both the competitive aspects as well as the participation of other parties, whose moves will influence our choices.It is common in Game Theory to use examples that have the benefit of identifying central issues across a wide spectrum of strategy problems. There is absolutely no need to read this book if you've read Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life.I'm not certain why they exist as two separate books. The content is almost identical, and 90% of the examples in this one were lifted from that. I have no idea why this is touted as a "sequel." It is not. It's just Thinking Strategically repackaged (but I will say that its package is prettier). The tagline says that it's a "guide to success in business and life," but it is not. It is game theory explained in an accessible way.I love game theory. I studied economics in college, and game theory had been my favorite class. I enjoyed Thinking Strategically and looked forward to reading this one. I was disappointed. Had I not read Thinking Strategically, I probably would have found this enjoyable, but I'm giving it two stars for the false advertising.

I greatly enjoyed this book. The authors used both contemporary pop culture and non-contemporary references. It was very easy read and enjoyable. I had to get it for one of my Master of Data Analytics class. It was way better than the class. I was able to understand everything they said though I also have my MBA with Stats concentration, so take that for what it's worth.The authors will bring up a topic then use an example of it or use an example to bring up a topic. The examples they picked were very good though I grew up in the 80s and 90s which I'm guessing the authors did as well.If I hadn't taken that class, I would totally get this book. Very well written with good information!This book is a purchase and keep it.

Awesome book. I didn't have much experience or knowledge about game theory, but this book has changed that! The authors do a great job laying out simple but practical examples that help you understand the concepts, and even add a little humor in there too!

Good book for learning Java, it covers the language in depth with both the visual part of Java and back end Java. I needed this for a college class but it makes a great reference for anyone interested in Java programming.MY RATING SYSTEM:I try to stick with the same criteria and system when reviewing products and here is how it breaks down…FIVE STARS: Great Product, would feel completely confident in recommending to others and consider the product to be a great overall value with no obvious faults.FOUR STARS: Still a very good product, I consider it to be overall a good satisfying purchase and can still recommend it in good faith but there is one small aspect about the product keeping it from a perfect score.THREE STARS: A good product but not a great one, it operates and appears as advertised but more than one aspect of the item is undesirable. This is an item I would use but probably consider an alternative option.TWO STARS: Product is definitely lacking in quality and or the way it operates. Would not recommend it to others and would seek and alternative elsewhere. It maybe just barely does what it is advertised to do but is probably not worth the money and there are many negative factors about it.ONE STAR: No two ways about it, this is a bad product and I would not recommend anybody purchase it.

Mind-boggling amount of typos--towards the end of the book, there were over 50 on one page! Publisher could not have cared less, was absolutely no help at all.

This is a very thorough and readable introduction to Java.I had to buy it for a class, and I was able to get a used copy (in excellent condition) for just fifteen dollars. That's a bargain!Highly recommended for anyone wanting to dive into learning Java.I care about the quality of paper in my books, and this one has those thin, but durable pages. They are ideal. It turns easily, and packs a lot of pages into less physical space.

This book explains stuff in a very understandable way. It's not really complicated, but good enough to cover all the java basics. However, in some parts it still looks confused. Good for those who has a little bit of java experience so that you can get used to tech terms.

As someone who knew nothing about programming at all, this book was a requirement for an introduction to programming in java course. Most who chose not to purchase the book, or just did not read it, suffered greatly and many dropped the course before it finished. But if you take the time to read the book, you will learn a lot very quickly and be able to race ahead of the classroom competition. With that said, the book is very well written and layed out. The topics covered in the book completely encompass anything you would expect to learn in a beggining Java course. After having read 2 other pure java books at the beginner/intermediate level, it makes me wish all books were this great quality and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start learning Java. 5/5

You're probably buying this for a class, right? Otherwise, a used copy of the 4th edition would do just fine I'm sure. This was an excellent textbook. I used it before and after lectures - it wasn't so dry that it was torture to read it and it was helpful enough as a reference that I went back to it. You can supplement your learning with a really easy read - Head First Java. Head First won't give you the comprehensiveness of this book, but it will get you through some of the more complicated concepts with pictures and humor.

I got this book to catch up on old, forgotten programming skills, and it does more than just remind me of what I once knew; it has answered so many questions. Savitch does a wonderful job of explaining everything. The writing is clear and interesting, and the many, many examples are extremely helpful.The one downside is the code for online assistance at the beginning of the book doesn't exist anymore, but this is the 4th edition and only $5 so I'm not too upset

If you are considering purchasing this book, I assume you are already familiar with the Walking Dead. This hardcover collection is my favorite way to read and collect the series. It saves so much room versus buying single issues or the trade paperbacks. The beautiful hardcover protects the stores and ensures they will last for a while. Each volume contains 12 comics as well as some rare artwork and commentary from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. I love how these look on my shelf and I would recommend them to ANY Walking Dead fan, whether you are brand new to the comics, or already own single issues or trade paperbacks.....these are THE way to collect, read, and enjoy them!!

I got the kindle version and it was hard to read the larger panels on my small phone screen. It was perfectly fine on a larger tablet.If you are a fan of the show and haven't read this, I will warn you that there are substantial differences. It is as if a drunk person explained the plot of the comic books to the screenwriter in a loud bar, and them the screenwriter wrote the show from memory a month later. This is to say that the 'highlights' from the comics made it to the show, but it is still a different story.People are on here trying to review this with deep literary analysis techniques, as if this were Shakespear or Proust or something. This is a comic about zombies. There are many like it, but this is the best one.If you like the show, you will like the comics. I promise. They complement each other, but are different enough to warrant spending time on both.

I bought this after watching the first 7 seasons of the TV show (and being severely disappointed with it from about season 4 onward), and it’s GREAT. I’m so grateful that the TV show inspired me to check out the comic, because the comic is better in many ways—but also, it’s different enough from the TV show that it’s engaging even from the pure plot and character development perspective, since people and events diverge so frequently from what I expect from watching the series.I’ve ordered (but not yet received) the next two volumes of the compendia [shifts glasses up nose], based on how good this volume is. Already, there are so many things that are different from the series, that I’m on the edge of my seat just wondering how things can possibly turn out here.HUGE SPOILERS for those who don’t care about surprises but want to get a sense of how different the comic is from the series: So there’s no Daryl, Merle, or Beth; Sophia, Lori, and Dale live but Carol dies; Carol is a needy sex freak; Rick loses his right hand early on; Michonne shacks up with Tyreese, Andrea shacks up with Dale; they never use the term “walkers” but DO discuss terminology periodically; Glenn isn’t a virgin at the beginning.

I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

I can't wait til the hubby is done with these so I can actually read them. We are fanatic TWD watchers and I finally got a chance to check these off on his Christmas list!!! He isn't a very big reader , but oh my goodness he read through these so fast!! and the entire time I had to tell him to stop telling me parts cause I wanted to read them, he said that they are um a little more "informative" than the show, so I would say NSFK's, which im really happy that he read them first and we know not to hand them over, we even feel uncomfortable giving them to our 15yo. I got him books 1&2 and plan on working on getting him a set of 2 twice a year. I would suggest getting them after you've watched the show only because if you read them first you might be a little disappointed that some things don't happen in the show that happen in the book. But if reading after the watching the show it gives a little more depth to most of the scenes. overall im happy with my purchase and plan on getting more

I get excited every year they put another one of the Omnibuses out. The artwork is phenomenal, and the inclusion of additional covers, sketches, and other drawings at the end is a welcomed finish. It is a big heavy book, so definitely designed as a collector's item. Highly recommended.Update: anyone know if #7 is coming out? These have been perfectly timed in the past to come out around the holidays and this year, nothin.Update: I contacted a distributor and they said while they don't have an official release date for Omnibus 7, they estimated sometime in July/August 2017
