About the Author
Frederick L. Dillon is a mathematics specialist and coach for the Institute for Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. For the Strongsville City Schools, Fred was a classroom teacher for middle and high school and was the mathematics department chair at the high school. Fred has, also, been planning and facilitating professional development for Ideastream, part of Cleveland’s PBS educational outreach program. Fred is a past member of the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and is a former officer for both the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Among Fred’s recognitions are Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, the American Star of Teaching, the Tandy Award, and the Christofferson-Fawcett Award for lifetime contribution to mathematics education. He also received the Most Influential Educator Award from Strongsville High School students seven times. Included are examples, progressions of tasks, and descriptions of what should be done to foster deep learning.The content on its 468+XXXVI pages is clearly divided into Introduction, 6 parts subdivided into not numbered chapters, Resources with 2 tables, 11 Reproducibles, and Additional Resources and References. Each chapter represents a topic subdivided into sub-chapters containing specific techniques, but not numbered and thus not very convenient to locate. Each technique is condensed/summarized in a list and may contain a table or a template. After the initial reading, it can be used for studying just particular techniques, just of specific topic, or warming up.The book is in black, white and green, 2 shades of green and 2 of gray. Its layout is modern, clear, and graphically advanced to emphasize most frequently needed info. The titles of chapters and sub-chapters are green in a capitalized typeface in 2 sizes, while those inside are boldfaced. Thus, grasping the pages at 1st glance is easy. No pages of the book are shown by the Amazon's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What also cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on good paper and the soft cover is not prone to catch fingerprints nor easily crease.
This binder is a wonderful resource for anyone teaching Common Core math at the high school level. It has conceptual overviews and how to make direct connections. It goes on with what the teachers do and what is then expected of the students. There are suggested material for each of the standards. This book basically lays out everything concisely and clearly so teachers can plan their lessons.The book has parts that cover Modeling, Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. It doesn't directly go over trigonometry or calculus. The Resources section has a table of standards and some reproducibles. There is also a list of online tools and some books that are of value. It's been quite some time since I taught this, but I'm glad to have this companion to ease me into it.
This is an extraordinary resource that I wish I had had when I taught Math in high school. Not having the training or the resources to teach math, this would have helped me a lot. Not only are the standards clear, but also how to demonstrate different concepts and how to integrate them into planning.

Although I’m not a teacher (and my algebra is rusty), this book makes me feel that I could teach high school math if no qualified teachers were available after some truly major disaster.The subtitle of the book says it all. For each standard, the standard is stated, and then the standard is explained in terms of what the students are expected to master, and why. This is followed by instructions on what the teacher does in class, and what the students do in class. Then another short section talks about addressing student misconceptions and common errors.It seems to me that this book could be very useful to a parent who is helping a child with high school math homework. The clear explanation of each standard makes it possible to determine what the child’s actual homework assignments are supposed to be teaching, and what the child needs to learn.
As a parent of a certain generation, I've found it nearly impossible to understand Common Core (which replaced the "New Math" that confused our own parents. It's always something...) This book has been a great resource as we try to help our middle-school son navigate the new standards, and more importantly, the new high-stakes testing.
I will state that I am not a teacher, educator or really anyone who should be teaching math at any level. I have always had the hardest time with mathematics throughout my whole life. Now I am trying to help my teenager, who is having a lot of the same problems that I did, learn basic algebra and it has not been going well. I've noticed that a lot of what and how they are teaching her is wildly different than what I learned because of the Common Core standards. I decided to get this very bulky book in hopes of helping myself so that I can help her. This has actually been a really big help for me to get back up to speed on the concepts that my child is learning. It is broken down in to segmented chapters that help me not only understand what she is being taught, but also help her make sense of the information she is taking in. I cannot speak for the educator side, but as a parent looking to figure out how to help your child it has been very useful.

And believe it or not, the 40-something looking Kirk pictured on the cover is actually 70 years young! Her "Live Raw" bible is an amazing compendium of dishes that will translate into eating pleasure and a lifelong of good health!
Just received the book and loving it. The recipes are delicious and easy. The downside about many raw recipes is that they have too many ingredients or are super laborious, but that is not the case with these recipes. After a trip to the market for produce, then ingredients like aminos, tahini, tamari and a few herbs, you're set to make a myriad of raw meals. Mimi also reviews tools essential for a raw kitchen (dehydrator, blender, spiralizer, etc.) so the book is great for people new to the raw path. Highly recommend!
I usually buy books on Kindle, but I wanted a hard copy of this book so I could fully absorb Mimi's philosophy. I actually read the book cover to cover on the beach at Pawley's Island. She's enjoyed a life of great health through her lifestyle, which she describes in detail. While some will say she was just lucky; it may not have been due to her lifestyle, I don't believe that. I do believe all the components of her personal healthy living plan enabled her to have a life of great health. Although it is mostly a cookbook, she does share her many tips for "feeling good." I found most of the recipes enticing and unique. I have tried 2 of them already, liking both well. Yes, they do require a whole new way of cooking and thinking, new ingredients and tools to buy, new cooking techniques to learn; however, that's the point! Over the last 2 years I have been transitioning from the SAD to a healthy Vegan lifestyle for both health and anti-aging benefits. This book has taken me to the next level. If you are unsure about going Vegan, this book might not be "easy" enough for you. Or maybe it will be, skipping all the BS and teaching you how to dive in. I found the book to be very useful and recommend it. Mimi's experience is pretty awesome and I am glad she's sharing it!
I just love this book. It is cheaper as chalk full of healthy recipes. I would call it health benefits if I could. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could because I have high allergies to omega 3s, (flax, chia, and hemp), I also have allergies to caffeine but can have low amounts in chocolate and I'm allergic to soy but can have soy sauce. Realizing my allergies are rare, I am not judging the author on not giving alternatives but I just wish she had so that's why I gave her a 4 1/2 stars to give her a heads up for her next edition. She is such an excellent and thorough author that I am positive she would want to cover her basis for those who follow her but have drawbacks due to allergies!
Even though I never made the transition to eating all raw, the food prep techniques are so original and helpful for anyone to learn. I tried the dehydrator breads and the nut cheeses. Both were delicious and eaten right away. I hope Mimi comes out with another book that better shows how a busy person can schedule the food prep so they can make the transition to 100% raw without eating salad all the time. I still end up eating my nuts not soaked, even though I know it's bad for you because I don't want to wait. I think people could really use some helpful homemaker techniques to make living raw easier.
I truly LOVE this book! I love the quality of the paper, the gorgeous photos, the level of detail - I never knew some herbs should be stored like flowers in the refrigerator. There is so much more that Mimi shares in this book that I just wish I had time every day to sit and leisurely read through it. I consider this book very valuable in helping one transition into a healthier way of living because it covers every aspect of a healthy lifestyle. The only negative is the complexity of Mimi's recipes. I am afraid this might frighten a beginner off.I bought one copy for myself and one for my daughter, who is vegan like me and also loves to eat raw best. She is very stressed out with a new job right now, however, and so very busy. So, I actually withheld it as a gift this Xmas to wait for a time when she is less likely to be overwhelmed. I put colorful tabs on the various chapters and left it out for her to look over before Xmas to get her reaction to it. She picked it up, carefully leafed through, and then said nothing about wanting a copy. She needs REAL simple now, I think, and this book is wonderfully NOT! :)Mimi is a perfectionist. (Takes one to know one.) I really appreciate this, and I am sure her recipes have so many ingredients because they all add up to something truly extraordinary. I really look forward to when I have enough time to try them as written. Still, I like simple best and will use her recipes more like a blueprint to create something of my own with much less fuss - unless I am planning a special dinner party. Unfortunately, my 20-something daughter does not yet have enough experience in the kitchen to do this! Overall, though, I will highly recommend this book to friends.
I bought Live Raw and Raw-Vitalize, also by Mimi Kirk. Live Raw has recipes that are a bit more time consuming with more ingredients. The recipes look good, but I haven't made any. They look like a lot of work. Mimi's other book, Raw-Vitalize is now my go-to raw recipe book. The recipes are easy to make, not super time consuming or needing lot's of ingredients. I would not buy Live Raw again, but highly recommend Raw-Vitalize. Raw-Vitalize is a must have for raw foodists.

She is moving to Atlanta and she said it was very helpful. I never saw it myself though so it is only 2nd hand.
The concept of this book is great, local hangouts and places "untouristy" however after looking through it's very basic for literally not knowing the area. It lists post offices, vets, dry cleaners, gas stations for each area throughout Atlanta. There is a very small portion of pages that have recommendations for quirky spots and hidden gems. Was hoping for a little more secret and less of the "basics".

Since the Korean War, I have been very concerned about the treatment of POWs by the use of both physical and psycholical methods. As my research broadened, the war in Vietnam occurred where these techniques of torture were again employed but I became more aware of POWs who were transferred to Russia and China where they were used as "human Guinea pigs". These experiments included the testing of substances to either change their minds or kill the subject. Recent suspicious deaths in the U.K. are testaments of this behaviour.This account of the experience of the book's author provides great insight into the treatment of those who were held by the North Vietnamese but of course does cover those who were shipped out to Russia. Of course there a large number of USA POWs who were shipped to Russia when they shipped all Allied POWs who were held in German camps when the Russians pushed into Berlin following the end of WW2 in 1945.General Patton had proposed to push to the Russian border but General Eisenhower preferred a slow flag waiving procedure thus leaving all of Eastern Europe under Russian control. I feel very sorry for the relatives of the missing and unaccounted for USA POWs.

Bill Robinson is the longest held enlisted POW of any of America's wars and one of the first enlisted men to receive the Air Force Cross. I've known him for almost 40 years and as the last POW shot down in North Vietnam knew a bit of his story. Over the years I've learned quite a bit more as we've had conversations and participated in various functions. This book gives the full backstory, not only about captivity but about his reintegration into our free society. This is an honest, from the heart, recounting of privation, faith, fellowship and making peace with a previously disruptive private life. Once you start reading, you won't want to stop.
Terrific story about an extraordinary person. Only reason I didn't give five stars is bc there were in my opinion far too many micro details that weren't necessary to tell the story. For example I got really bored trying to read through descriptions of military equipment I'm unfamiliar with to find out what happened. What I wanted to know was who is Bill Robinson and what did he endure during captivity? Just too many details of things that were irrelevant to the main idea.
This book is one of the best yet. It explains some of what our men faced in these prisons in Vietnam and all I could think of was "how do men like these survive and come back and live their lives while we take it for granted?" Without this kind of courage America would never have survived as we have all these years. Get the book, it will one you really want to read again!
A humble and big hearted young man, someone you can relate to, enlisted AF, is a POW for 7 and a half years, held under horrific conditions and tortured, imprisoned with strong willed patriots (in the most serious and honorable sense of the word); he matched them in strength and will. Most were officers; he was not. They nursed each other, strengthened each other, and in this man's story, they helped him grow to be a great man. The context then was the Viet Nam War. Read about the big picture: Decisions made by the Presidents and Their Men and the consequences for these prisoners; the lives of these Americans, small events and huge events while POWs, all revealing significant aspects of each POW as a man--and of their captors; read how military training and discipline gave these men the strength to serve with honor while imprisoned; how they coped day in and day out for so very long; the effect on this airman's family members and their abilities to cope, or not, with their loved one away and at risk for so long; how The Longest Rescue culminates not just in freedom for the young man but in finally finding and marrying the right woman, the one who completed him and helps him with his newer mission of supporting other POWs from that and other wars, inspiring young warriors with his presentations; and being all he can be to his family, his community, and his nation. It's not all torture. It's inspiring. It's humbling. These men were so human, yet superhuman in their strength and bravery. They are brothers together to this day, decades after release. Reading this book brings the big picture and this airman's story alive and is very readable. The story continues here at home for them and for us. Learn more about how and why. I have known Bill Robinson now for several months. He is such an inspiration for me and I am sure the same applies for countless other people, Especially those who may suffer from Vietnam War related PTSD. I have learned in talking to him and observing him talking to others, that you must habituate and face the demons face to face, head on. For many years I couldn't do this. Now with the help of the Veterans Association and a wonderful Psychiatrist, I am able to more understand how to deal with the PTSD issue. But, the one person who has been instrumental in my "attitude" adjustment is Bill Robinson. After reading this book on his years as a POW and listening to some of his personal accountability, my experiences and problem areas have become miniscule. What a great American Hero. I am proud to have him for my friend.
This is a difficult read because of treatment as POW. Stick with it because after release and later after active duty in USAF there are interesting happening is life.
Very touching and heartfelt book by an acquaintance of mine years ago. Great to be informed of some of the many experiences all of our Military Personnel have, almost daily, especially during combat. A true story of the ;hardest of times for all of our Military people during a time when most of America did NOT support their efforts. A must read for those who really care for our Military and some of the trials they experience.
