Steven W. Manskar is the Director of Wesleyan Leadership for the General Board of Discipleship, Nashville, TN. Very useful text for study of Wesley's "A Plain Account of Christian Perfection." It is difficult nowadays for most people to understand the language used by Wesley in the 1700s. Having a version in modern English, with current usage of words and sentence construction leads Wesley's invaluable contribution to study by scholars and laity alike. Column notes are mostly very useful as well.
This book really helped me to understand what John Wesley was talking about on his original "A Plain Account of Christian Perfection" An excellent interpretation.
Contemporary language of Wesley's sermon is very helpful. Suchocki's theological/spiritual reflection is excellent and inspiring. This is excellent material for personal reading as well as group study.
I needed multiple copies of this book for a book study group. The book was not readily available in quantity, but Amazon delivered all copies ordered much ahead of promised delivery date. The book is an excellent foundation for an in-depth study because it provides helpful access to the material and thought-provoking interpretation. And Amazon.com's service was super!
I bought this at the recommendation of a Methodist pastor friend of mine. Being quite familiar with the original edition of Wesley's Plain Account, I had for hoped for something like this to come along to help in making Wesley's theology of sanctification more accessible for today's reader. While the authors certainly did accomplish the goal of presenting Wesley's Plain Account in modern language, I found the use of gender-inclusive language unhelpful, especially in referring to God as "Self" instead of "Himself." No doubt Wesley would be turning over in his grave if he knew of it! LOL. The study guide included in the back I found helpful.

Kisses From a Distance filled some of the "blanks" about my immigrant family who came here Lebanon in the early 20th century. Like the book, my own grandmother was left by her mother in a convent at age 2 with an aunt (the mother superior)to enable her mother to immigrate to America. At age 14 my grandmother also was "kidnapped" against her aunt's wishes from the convent by relatives who brought her down from the mountains to the port of Beirut for transport American. Grandmother had been promised in marriage to my grandfather, a peddler, who she literally met at the altar. Although the harshness of life here caused them to loose two of their nine children, many of their offspring became millionaires and philanthropists who helped create St. Jude's Children's Hospital together with another Lebanese man named Danny Thomas.When I brought my daughter some homemade "hummus" the other day at school here in Illinois, I told her of the author's reference in his book to his father on his deathbed, who was awakened by his son's kiss on a morning after the son had consumed large amounts of garlicky hummus---his father opened his eyes, saying: "John, too much garlic".That sums it up. It's a close book about immigrants: their industry, simplicity, focus, humor, criticisms, and dreamm, The American Dream.Bill Haddad
Beautifully written. My ancestors came here during the famine in Ireland and the book reminded me of the hardships and struggles immigrants go through and yet they made it, worked hard, and raised their families here. A very worthwhile read and enjoyable.

Raff Ellis's story of his family's immigration experiences can be read as if it is an engrossing novel in today's market of published written works. Combining his miraculous discovery after the death of his mother, of a cache of over 200 letters, extensive research and visits to Lebanon, the author is able to tell in narrative form the family's trials and tribulations. I found myself continually referring to the family trees to keep track of all of its members and their interactions.The highlight of the story for me was in the fact that I discovered more about one of Raff's brothers, Al, (like how he got his name) with whom I worked for 5 years in our parish in Andover, MA. This past June I also visited him in South Africa where he is pastor of a mother parish with three "outstation" Zulu parishes. I came to realize that we all have family and personal backgrounds that make us who we are. Don't miss this fascinating tale of one family that journeyed to America, becoming a part of the whole of our nation of immigrants. You won't be able to put it down. The story will be circulating in Andover and wherever else it finds its way. Pass it on, for that is what storytelling is all about!
I teach a course, Writing Your Memoirs, in which I not only encourage and instruct students in writing their own stories, but to read the stories of others. I read a lot of published memoirs---in fact, it is one of my favorite genres---and provide my students with bibliographies of Recommended Reading.Raff Ellis' "Kisses from a Distance," the life stories of his immigrant parents who came to America from Lebanon, is a book I'm definitely adding it to my Recommended Reading list. It's a good story, very readable. It is obviously a long labor of love, good writing, and much research.Especially interesting is the way this author interweaves the past, the lives of his parents, and the present, his commentary on the research, talking with relatives and others in Lebanon who knew his parents. I hope he will now write of his childhood growing up Lebanese-American, and bring the story up to the present.I highly recommend "Kisses from a Distance" to everybody who likes to read memoirs, is interested in the immigrant experience, and who appreciates history and good research.
I loved the colorful detail of Raff Ellis's family history. Such knowledge of before and after emmigration is rare. A bonus to the story is his family being from the former fuedal lords and their story being told from a view point rarely seen. Well written, it speaks to the immigrant experience of the late 19th and early 20th century in America for any ethnic group. As a descendent of Lebanese immigrants from the same period I am proud that our story is now fully presented better than I ever think it has been before. The afterword portion at the end was a treat as Raff discusses full on the racial prejudices that face arab Americans and his experiences with these prejudices. It was true vidication for me and my familie's upbringing here as Arab Americans. Only the highest praises, I strongly recommend his book for any students history class! Thanks Raff!
This book is both fascinating and thought provoking. As an Arab American I found this detailed account of the Ellis Family's journey to America especially interesting, but it's also certain to appeal to readers whose family came from any land. Raff Ellis captures both the history and traditions of Lebanon while describing in detail the trials and tribulations his family encountered trying to immigrate to America to make a new home. Although "Kisses From a Distance" is a very personal account which obviously is a labor of love for Ellis, he does not suger coat the story. It's well written and rich with detail. I enjoyed this book very much and I highly recommend it.
"Kisses From a Distance" was recommended by a friend and I'm thankful to her for that! It's a very readable memoir, touched with humor and filled with first-hand stories handed down to Raff Ellis. His narrative flows easily and the photos add much interest. I drew many connections to my own Irish great-grandparents' experience. They immigrated to NYC during the Irish Potato Famine. I just wish I had the treasure trove of letters and photos that Raff has. They are priceless. All Americans are descended from immigrants, so we can all identify with "Kisses From a Distance," no matter our ancestors' ethnicity. Kudos to Raff for this labor of love.

I've been looking for a comprehensive single source history of the Cobra for some time, and this is it. Verier has done an excellent job tracing the history of this iconic attack chopper from the drawing board to the present. Most thought this bird would last 20 years tops, but through upgrades, advances in technology, two engines, the Cobra is still in use after 50 years. While not completely up to the standards of an Apache AH-64, the Cobra is still a viable threat on the battlefield.In addition to the narrative, there are many excellent crisp color photos, line drawings, data tables and pilots stories. I have only one complaint, that is made with reservation - the book is small at 7x9 inches. I know, cost vs size, publisher trying to do the consumer a favor. Other than that, it is an excellent read for Cobra fans and I'd recommend it to aviation buffs and modelers alike.
A good coverage of all the history of the Cobra. It is actually a small format size sort of like a large novel, which I actually really like as it makes it quite portable and fun to read. The downside of this however is that it makes the pictures invariably smaller.The history is covered quite well as is foreign users and the like. It would have been nice to see a bit more technical information on the aircraft and some more detail on its actually combat history would be nice too. If you want more detail on those items then you might need to look elsewhere, nevertheless it is a nice history of the aircraft.
A lot of what was in this book is in Mike Verier's previous 2 AH-1 Cobra books so I was disappointed at the small level of actual new material. And those books date all the way back to the late 80's so that may say a lot. My dad flew the aircraft "Betsy" mentioned in several of the photographs during Desert Storm provided to Mike from Floyd Werner which was originally provided by me so that was a surprise. It's actually pretty neat that I can show something to my kids when they are older that their Grandfather is in a book! Just wish the photo credit was given to my dad since he took the pictures.
An excellent accounting of the development, use, variants, and countries flying the venerable Cobra attack helicopter. The book is well written, clear to the layman and written with an obvious enthusiasm for the topic. The author makes clear the changes that occur between the different models and the reasons behind why and how the helicopter was improved over the years.If you're an aviation enthusiast, or just love the Cobra, this book is well worth a read.
5000 hrs of Cobra time. This was the most comprehensive, thorough, and intense treatment of the AH-1. Can't say enough of how much I enjoyed this book. Learned some things. Some things were glossed over or not covered in as much detail as I would have like (C-NITE, 1/2 Attk). But, overall, the finest history of the AH-1 that I have read.
It is a very good book, the best that I have found on the cobra.
Individual of descriptive content is not bad. However, hard to read because the chapters is not good.
Very good information with good photos and facts to back it up.

This was a very good book. I only wish I would have read it before my dog went to sleep as I would have done some things differently - I really would have tried to have his last day be better and do some of his favorite things, and I would have cut some of his fur to have it with me forever. It was very helpful in validating some of my strong feelings of loss. My advice would read this now especially if your furry friend has an illness or is getting old. It may help to prepare you.
This book helped so much! I was devastated when I lost my Westie, Lady cancer/ kidney disease at the age of 10. After caring for her for one and 1/2 years I was lost. This book understands what you feel.
I selected this particular book because the dog on the cover looks exactly like our Scarlett. We had to put her down in July due to severe arthritis that made her totally immobile and in a tremendous amount of pain. Other than that, she was healthy which made the decision even harder. She was 11 and the light of my life. The letter in the book from the dog to the owner was extremely comforting to me even though it brought tears to my eyes. The book hit upon many things that I was feeling as well as stupid things people say that aren't dog lovers. This all helped. I have highlighted many portions of this book in my reader so I can refer back to it later when I feel a breakdown coming. It is a good book to help people who have lost pets.

It helped me to know it OK to grieve about losing my Jesse and that all of us pet parents feel some degree of guilt when our best buddy passes...all of us feel that “what did I miss� Could I have done more for my puppy? LOST MY 15 YEAR OLD MALE SHIH TZU ON SEPT 1. IT HAS BEEN DEVASTATING AND THIS BOOK HELPED. I CRIED THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK. IT LETS YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE WITH YOUR FEELINGS AND IT'S O.K. TO MOURN AS LONG AS IT TAKES NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE SAY.
After scheduling euthanasia for our thirteen year-old Redone Coonhound, I searched for a book on pet bereavement. Liver failure had stolen his quality of life for too long already. I was a few chapters in when that day arrived, and it helped me be more supportive to my son, who was Duke's most important person. What I was not prepared for was losing my own best boy, a Beagle mix named Beethoven, not one month later. Every week to ten days, I would read another chapter and feel the heavy veil of grief lift just a little. Today I finished the book, along with a box of tissues. I still have a long way to go, but I have no doubt I will one pass by their Cremains, photos, and collars and reminisce with a smile instead of these tears. This book has already helped me so much.
Read it, it's a comfort. Has some good ideas. It helps to know, I'm not the only one that feels this way.
I ordered this book when I thought the end was imminent for my 18 year old dog, Audrey. Thankfully, she is still here 2 months later and I have had a chance to read and cry while reading this book with her at my feet.
