Guess that's why they call it a beginners guide. Read this for a Pentateuch course in seminary and being that I was a "beginner" this was an EXCELLENT RESOURCE! Here's a snippet of by book review:As one being introduced to the entire framework of the Torah, I found this book to be very beneficial. The Jewish-Christian authorship was unique and did not present any difficulty in the presentation of the information. It was not, a one would expect, controversial or competitive, but rather it was extremely conversational in lieu of the bilateral perspectives. I believe that the authors were successful in achieving the premise of the book and continue to highlight the influence and continued relevance of the Torah. Admittedly, prior to reading this book I held no previous knowledge of the Pentateuch, the meaning of the term or even an understanding of the importance of the material it encompassed. I highly anticipated having a hard time trying to digest the exposition of each book of the Pentateuch. The Pentateuch or even the Old Testament in general, does not get the treatment that the New Testament does in this post-modern age. Initially I held the New Testament in a greater light than the Old Testament. After engaging the material in this book, I understand the significant role that the Pentateuch has played in setting the framework for the New Testament as a whole. I also gained a thorough knowledge of how the law codes that were instituted in the Pentateuch are still used in many traditions, including Jewish and Christian. In chapter seven on the book of Numbers, Kaminsky and Lohr discuss the priestly blessing found in Number 6:22-27. I found the discussion on the Christian use of this passage as a way to conclude the worship service to be insightful due to the reason that my own pastor uses this priestly blessing as the benediction in our church. Another asset to this book is its use of dialogue boxes that briefly look at topics such as “The Meaning of Purity,” “Monotheism vs. Monolatry” and “The Voice of Women in the Torah” and many more. These tables served as great references and an addition to the information discussed in each chapter. I would definitely recommend this book to new students entering biblical studies or anyone being introduced to the Torah as a whole. By engaging this book, one will become, as I have, very aware of the Torah, its themes, narratives and its overall relevance for believers in Christ Jesus whether Jewish or Christian.

As someone who likes to read different things from different places, religion is one of them. This is a good book to read, even if you are not Jewish ( which I am not) as it explains the old testament.

A very good intro to the Torah from a Christian and Jewish perspective. It has unique entry-ways into the text, and helpful observations of the text from historical-critical, literary-narrative, and theological perspectives.

About the Author

Jack Viertel is the senior vice president of Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns and operates five Broadway theaters. He has been involved in dozens of productions presented by Jujamcyn since 1987, including multiple Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winners, from City of Angels to Angels in America. He has also helped shepherd six of August Wilson’s plays to Broadway. He is the artistic director of New York City Center’s acclaimed Encores! series, which presents three musical productions every season. In that capacity he has overseen fifty shows, for some of which he adapted the scripts. He conceived the long-running Smokey Joe’s Cafe and the critically acclaimed After Midnight and has been a creative consultant on many shows, including Hairspray, AChristmas Story, and Dear Evan Hansen. He was the Mark Taper Forum’s dramaturg and the drama criticand arts editor of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and he has spent a decade teaching musical theaterat the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

Jack Viertel's new book, "The Secret Life of the American Musical" is a stunningly informative book about the structure and success (or lack thereof) of modern day musicals. In a compelling style, the author takes us through a performance from "Overture" to "Curtain Call" and describes in great detail how every aspect of a musical works. His experience in the world of musicals gives him credence that few other writers would be able to claim.The book is set in a chronological order of a performance and being just a few years younger than Viertel, he helped me relive moments of musicals from my childhood. He particularly enjoys certain ones...."Guys and Dolls", "Gypsy" and "Fiddler", to name just three, but what makes Viertel's knowledge so wonderful is that he ably relates how musicals are set up and executed. I was especially fond of three chapters...."If I Loved You", "Intermission" and "Clambake", particularly enjoying his take on what was served at intermission a half-century ago. He also introduces the reader to things like the "11 o'clock number", a phrase about which I had never heard. His final chapter concerning recordings is a beautiful way to end the book.I must admit that my own experience of musicals is much more confined to those of the fifties, sixties and seventies, so when Viertel launches into musicals beginning thirty years ago to the present...well, those were quicker reads for me. Yet all in all, "The Secret Life of the American Musical" is comprehensive with an nicely produced narrative. It's a must read for those who enjoy and want to know more about the American musical experience.

Jack Viertel knows his sh...stuff. As a teacher of musical theatre technique and musical theatre history for more than 30 years, I can see through the charlatans who write books like this. And there are a good number of them. Therefore, it was a total joy to read the real goods from someone who has been a part of that very history for decades. Without being overly anecdotal and chatty, as some of these books tend to be, Mr. Viertel shares insights into the construction of musicals with an academic wisdom and a warm sense of humor. The thing you never doubt - and what really makes the book endearing - is his total and unmitigated passion for his subject matter. And when he does present an idea that is biased or slanted, he tells you so. In advance. For example, I don't know that I would lavish HAIRSPRAY with the amount of attention that Mr. Viertel does, but he reminds us early on that he had a very large hand in the creation of that show, and I think his pride in his own work (it IS an awfully good show) is commendable. I just don't know that it belongs in the same breath as GUYS AND DOLLS and GYPSY. But that's the fun part of being a musical theatre nut - getting to disagree with other musical theatre nuts about favorites! Anyway, if this is your world, this is a MUST, MUST, MUST READ. As a regular audience member at the invited dress rehearsals of the Encores series at City Center in New York, I have grown to look forward to Jack Viertel's introductions of the shows (he is the Artistic Director of Encores) as much as the shows themselves. He is witty and smart, a great teacher and an unabashed theatre-lover. All of that good stuff jumps out of every page of this book. Kudos.

Unique book - author writes in a fluid style which compares similarities and differences in well-known musicals. Viertel offers: 1) insights into the formulaic structure of the Broadway musical during the 1940's - 1960's, 2) a deep understanding of this genre - gained from personal experience; and 3) amusing tidbits and Broadway trivia (info on the title of "My Fair Lady" title is a gem).However, as Viertel compares various musicals in a "stream of consciousness" style of writing - he points out similarities that don't necessarily ring true. Sometimes, it feels like he's comparing the proverbial apple & orange.Overall, he's on firm footing, but it really helps to see the live shows or films for the comparisons to make sense. The short scenes in the book don't offer enough material to get the gist of a character or a specific scene. So, before reading, you should see well-known musicals by Oscar & Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner & Lowe, Bock & Harnick, Jerry Herman, Sondheim, Styne, Bernstein,etc. Fortunately, I've seen most of the shows mentioned, but without a reference point from memory, it would have been frustrating to understand the author's conclusions. For example, I haven't seen "Sunday in the Park with George" by Sondheim, so, the discussion of this show didn't register at all.The best thing about the book by far is Viertel's passion for the stage and his love of musicals - these feelings come shining through.

Excellent book, a really nice companion piece to Razzle Dazzle: The Battle for Broadway that I finished last week. Whereas the earlier book made me want to read more about theatre history. The Secret Life.. made me want to listen to and/or go see some shows that I have missed. There were a few places where I felt that the conceit fell apart a little bit (the book is structured like the musical structure it is teaching), but overall it works. This is a textbook, and at times it reads like one, but overall a fun read and very informative. I really loved the recommend cast albums section at the end.

There are so many great things about this book. The size of the book alone causes excitement. The boys I bought this book for couldn't wait to flip through the colorful pages and when they did, they chose the first machine they wanted to build. These boys were 8 and 9 years old and needed some help, but dad was more than willing to assist. Quality time together and lots of fun! I will be buying this book again... it makes a great gift!

Really cool idea, models actually go together well and are well designed. We bought this for our 6 year old and he can help a bit holding pieces together as glue dries and punching pieces out but that's about it. If your child is under 12 years old, be ready to help. Average time spent per model is 60-90 minutes.

I bought this for my 6 year old who is extremely curious about everything that has to do with how stuff works-he mixes things, he builds Lego sets that contain close to 300 pieces by patiently following the instructions, so I thought this would be really cool. The folding and gluing part of this book has not really been thought out-you have pretty thick pieces of paper that need to be folded very precisely, and these are not the origami type of folds where you fold things in half, this is where you fold approximately 5 mm of one cutout to be glued to another 5 mm folded from another cutout. No one has time or patience for it and while I am a huge believer in activities that teach kids patience, perseverance and effort in this effortless age of instant gratification, I also do not believe that someone needs to go at something to the point of utmost frustration and this is what this book has resulted in.

Bought as a gift for a nephew and he loved it. He had so much fun assembling the projects with family members.

Michael Volpe’s Book on Chris Mackney–describes court corruption in amazing detail.I have just finished Mr. Volpe’s book on court corruption, and in particular the experiences of Mr. Chris Mackney-as he worked his way through a highly troubled divorce with a ex-wife with an interesting family secret that came out during his own internet research: it was there he discovered that his wealthy father in law had been convicted of murder, had likely been involved in much more criminal activity, and his ex-wife conveniently forgot to tell him during their long marriage.As a result, the father-in-law, a Mr. Scamardo (what an apropos name), went to great lengths to fund a divorce for $1.2 million which of course involved dozens of failures of the court to simply follow the law, set reasonable child support for the father and a fair co-parenting schedule. What happened instead was a complete nightmare leading to his own suicide when judgments against him ended up for over $100,000. Mr. Mackney never in fact did receive his share of equity in the marital residence which would have wiped out the debt; instead he continually struggled to fend off multiple unfair motions, one after the other. His ex-wife had him arrested and jailed four times. Once she and her attorney claimed attempted extortion when, after multiple attempts to reduce his child support to a level he could afford, he threatened to go to the media if it wasn’t reduced. He spent 3 months in jail awaiting trial, only to have the jury acquit him of extortion, deciding that child support is for the child so no money could be extorted from the ex-wife.During the overly litigious divorce, the extreme motion practice of his ex-wife cost him his job and all future job prospects. One job was lost when Mrs. Mackney went and tried to depose his boss. That was the end of that job.Mr. Mackney’s child support was based on an old tax return when he happened to make over $250,000 for the year as a Realtor in 2007, at the height of the real estate boom–something he never did before, or after that year. But the child support was set at $2,800 per month year after year and the court refused his many motions to decrease it at any time, even after Mr. Mackney lost his job, had no income and his ex-wife continually hounded him in court and harassed him outside the courtroom.There are great descriptions of many of the lengths his ex-wife went to engaging in deception, trickery, parental alienation, describing him as mentally ill, when he clearly was not.Mr. Mackney lost his custody rights when he failed to fax in one receipt to the court–he simply forgot or was confused.Of course, all of Mrs. Mackney’s sins were always forgiven by the court.Mr. Mackney, for most of the divorce proceedings, was forced to attend court pro se because he had no income and no attorney. In addition, “professionals” assigned to the case always sided with the wife, because, as many of you already know, he who pays gets the total cooperation from any professional assigned to the case and will attack the less wealthy litigant, engaging in slander, libel, false light and defamation, unless and until the appropriate fees are paid. Make no mistake, there are court appointed experts that can be bought and who can change their testimony for the highest bidder and most prompt payer.The book is a very interesting read and I highly recommend it for those going through, or might possibly face, a contentious and overly litigious proceeding with someone hell bent on utter destruction of their ex. Utter destruction of a spouse, parental alienation, Legal Abuse Syndrome, suicide by men during divorce and other concepts of outrageous unjust litigation are aptly identified and discussed.Highly recommended. Thank you Mr. Volpe for bringing this to the attention of the public, and more particularly those who are in need of your expertise and analysis to protect them. The book is interesting and well written. The emails of Mr. Mackney during all his troubles and tribulations were preserved by Mr. Volpe and they are republished at the end of the book. The ex-wife somehow was able to wrest a copyright registration out of the court, and she then went on a campaign of unconstitutional gag orders to remove all derogatory information about her and her ex-husband from the internet.

I purchased this book and have read it thoroughly. It is an expose of appalling circumstances in family courts in our country. Mr. Volpe uses cases of both men and women being absolutely ruined in every way to show that no one is truly safe. It is an incredibly difficult book to read because everyone wants to believe that children are never taken from a protective parent and placed with an abusive parent, but the sad truth is that it is not uncommon for that to happen. Mr. Volpe also gives example after example of people being silenced and threatened in order to keep misdeeds from being exposed. This book will absolutely terrify you.One of the quotes that chilled me to the bone is from Joan Kloth-Zanard, a Guardian Ad Litem. Mr. Volpe reports that Ms. Zanard emailed the following: "Shared parenting would actually reduce the issue of abuse, because both parents would be more involved equally. This would provide a chance for the kids to have a safety net. It would also enable counseling much more effectively for all involved. And believe it or not, someone who physically abuses does so because this is what happened to them as a child and it is all they know. They desperately need counseling to heal. While not all abusers can be healed, such as those that are sociopathic, there are many a person who has turned this around with proper counseling and education. As for pedophiles, while this is a harder group to heal, at the very least, with shared parenting, the other parent can teach the children right from wrong and how to say no and go get help if it is physical. While I do not condone this behavior, these pedophiles are damaged from their own childhoods or warped thoughts and ideas. But without shared parenting, you have no way to protect your kids."That quote shows why Mr. Volpe's work is so important. There are people out there who believe, like Ms. Zanard, that abusers should have unrestricted visitation with their victims. It doesn't matter whether that belief comes from a delusional mindset or a personal agenda, it is treacherous and dangerous to victims. This is an issue that crosses all gender, racial, religious and ethnic barriers. It affects us all. Even people who are not directly involved feel the results as the court system churns out damaged children who become damaged adults.

This is a sad and interesting read about the family law system, the abuses that exist within the process of getting a divorce, and the unfortunate reality that comes from abuses of the system.I found the parts of the book that discussed the Silver Bullet divorce strategy fascinating (and disturbing). I recommend this book for anyone who is considering marriage or divorce. You can choose a better path than divorce litigation.

Excellent read. I would recommend it for anyone interested in political theology or the conscious engagement into black theology in light of the Social Gospels.

J. Deotis Roberts was Dean of the School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and professor of theology at Union Theological Seminary; previously he was a professor of theology at Howard University; he has also written other books such as Liberation And Reconciliation: A Black Theology,Black Religion, Black Theology: The Collected Essays of J. Deotis Roberts,Bonhoeffer and King: Speaking Truth to Power,The Prophethood of Black Believers: An African American Political Theology for Ministry, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the original 238-page paperback edition.]He wrote in the Introduction to this 1974 book, “A book should have a perspective. The present work is a constructive attempt at theological interpretation within the perspective of black awareness. Many peoples today have a new consciousness. The writer is avowedly BLACK. The reader will note that the theological positions of neo-orthodoxy and the British postliberal theologians have shaped my thought. I have been aided in my thinking by existentialism and the theology of hope. To be honest, it would be well for me to mention how much classical Western philosophy and theology have impinged upon my mind and spirit. My study of Christian Platonism will always be in focus. The study or Eastern and African religions will be reflected from time to time, but I want to speak from the Christian faith claim in its healing and social dimensions. My purpose is to speak to the whole man, body and spirit, in solitude and in the encounter with other persons-in-community.” (Pg. 13)He continues, “There is a need for a theology growing out of the experience of the black American. Whereas today there is much excitement over a revolutionary theology in general, and the theology of hope in particular, the unique problems of the black experience are not properly treated… Many of these programs in political theology are highly theoretical, ivory-tower pursuits indulged in by those far removed by race and space from the fray. There is an obvious need for empirical programs BY and FOR those engaged in the struggle for liberation… It is not the duty of a black theologian to speak for all ‘minorities’ and ‘ethnics.’ He should encourage these to speak for themselves, loud and clear, until they are heard. They alone know the depths of their sufferings and their hunger for liberation.” (Pg. 15-16)He explains, “Indigenization is a key concept for black theology as it is for all socially conscious programs in theology… What we have in mind when we refer to ‘indigenization’ is … a deliberate and avowed acceptance of ‘context’ or ‘situation’ as the matrix of theological discourse. An indigenized theology takes us beyond the so-called national theologies of the past and the present… The black theologian must turn to the Third World, to Latin America, to Asia and Africa, to observe theological models of ‘indigenization’ worthy of this consideration. We have already referred to what some Latin-American theologians are doing to indigenize theology.” (Pg. 29-30)He suggests, “In this time of black consciousness, the black man who rereads the Bible will be greatly rewarded. Its message to the black man is personal and social. The Bible… also addressed black people. For example, the bondage of Israel becomes their bondage and the deliverance of Israel their deliverance… the Bible holds to a ‘holistic’ view of man. Biblical anthropology conceives of man as a unified being---body, mind, and spirit. It follows that there is no way for an enslaved man to be free. The faulty theology---written into law---which asserted that a slave would remain chained in body and free in spirit is to be condemned as a demonic distortion of the Biblical message.” (Pg. 38-39)He points out, “African peoples are not people of a Book. There is a strong reliance upon the spoken word and the continuity of kinship ties as a means of transmitting a religious tradition… A people of oral traditions is more dependent upon a culture-based approach to theology than is a people of a Book.” (Pg. 43) He continues, “Since black religious experience is mainly an oral tradition and since it is more intuitive than conceptual, we need a way of doing theology that is based primarily upon image-thinking… This makes religion a cohesive aspect of black culture. The arts, poetry, music, and the like, are closely associated with religion. Symbols emerging out of various forms of black expression can inform theology, since all theology is reflection upon religious experience.” (Pg. 46)He explains, “A black political theology will seek a balance between the quest for meaning and protest against injustices. A life… must also be prepared to oppose the dehumanization and all threats to authentic existence if it is to be worth living.” (Pg. 58) Later, he adds, “It is a crucial consideration that love and justice be linked with power in black theology… Black theologians and churchmen must use all the power at their disposal to liberate and humanize life for black people. The black church is a slumbering giant. A black political theology is designed to awaken this most powerful black institution in the cause of the liberation of the whole man.” (Pg. 69-70) He continues, “Black power, correctly understood, is freedom for responsibility in the interest of a permanent state of liberation… Black theology and the black church must become strong allies in the cause of black liberation.” (Pg. 72-73)He observes, “Our understanding of the gospel is political. Man in black theology is a being who exercises power on behalf of his authentic manhood… Blacks who have experienced America, often as a nightmare, have known all along that something is radically wrong with a society which remains so racist, inhuman, and unjust to the largest minority in the country because of the complexion of their skin.” (Pg. 94)He notes, “Black theology cannot accept either the Jesus who preserves the American way of life or the Jesus of the counter culture. Jesus is not, for us, the world’s greatest business organizer, the chairman of the biggest board of all. He is not the bringer of wealth, peace of mind, or Consciousness III… He is not a super athlete. Neither is he a societal dropout, a political subversive, a guerilla fighter complete with submachine gun. In other words, Jesus must not be locked into a given cluster of political and cultural perceptions. We see a Christ ABOVE culture who is at the same time at work IN culture and history for redemptive ends---setting free the whole person, mind, soul, and body.” (Pg. 119)He offers some critiques of James Cone: “Cone does not see any relation between the teaching and example of Jesus and his so-called black Christ, who is involved in the black liberation struggle. We are not to raise the question, What would Jesus do? for his situation was so different from ours. To take this position is to leave the troops of the black liberation army, already confused, in a state of total moral confusion. To take this position is to leave the troops of the black liberation army, already confused, in a state of total moral confusion… where would this leave the black church, the only institutional giant at our disposal? The black church needs a theology of social change and political action… When black scholars read, analyze, and assess that is going on in their fields of specialization, they have a much more urgent task as they look at Jesus. The question… ‘What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?’ [is] at the center of our quest. Jesus means freedom. He is the Liberator. This indicates that we cannot abandon either the Jesus of history or the Christ of faith.” (Pg. 123-124)He points out, “For blacks, Jesus is understood in a psychocultural sense. He leads us to a new self-understanding. He helps us to overcome the identity crisis triggered by white oppression of blacks… It is the assertion of our dignity, our manhood, our peoplehood. Jesus brings a message from a God who creates, redeems, and judges all men… We identify with the Jesus of the oppressed, who enters into life. Jesus who is the Emmanuel is the black Messiah. The ‘white Christ’ alienates us. He symbolizes the oppressor and intensifies our identity crises. The black Christ turns us on, so to speak. Jesus as the liberator confronts us in the symbol of ‘soul.’” (Pg. 137)He states, “Black political theology is based upon an understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ as the power of God to do far more than we ask or think. It is a theology of meaning, protest, and liberation. It is a theology that merges the secular and the sacred. It is a theology that combines the priestly and the prophetic---pietism and activism… It provides a gospel of power for the black church to undergird its thought, worship, and life. This gospel of power will enable black Christians to have a better self-understanding, to overcome the identity crisis caused by the black reality in America. It will liberate individual black Christians and black congregations as agents of black liberation.” (Pg. 152-153)He suggests, “Both ethics and eschatology are essential to black political theology… One cannot see the present life in full focus without a look at the future life, but neither may one fully appreciate the future life apart from the present life… Eschatology can no longer be a mere addendum to black theology. It is at the center of any theology which endeavors to bring a meaningful hope to the weak and the powerless… Black theology has unique promise of ushering eternity into time without surrendering a grasp upon eternal hope. What we seek is not QUANTITY of existence but QUALITY.” (Pg. 179-180) Later, he adds, “A black political theology provides a theological foundation for an action-oriented people who are determined to be ‘black and free.’ This theology emerges out of the crucible of black suffering and out of the dark night of the black soul’s distress. We seek the deliverance of a people as well as personal liberation.” (Pg. 204)He clarifies, “We must not ignore the differences in the contexts of liberation theology and black theology. The liberation theologians are in Latin America, where Roman Catholicism is predominant. They are in ‘developing countries,’ the governments are often totalitarian, and the masses are often influenced by some aspect of Marxism… Liberation movements are often violent, and the task is to overthrow the existing social order to make way for a more humane order. Looking now a black theology, we note that it is mainly Protestant… Black theologians live in a developed and pluralistic society… Ours is more of a race problem than a class problem. The suffering of the black poor is very widespread and intense, however. Between black Americans and the masses of people in Latin America is a fellowship of those who bear the mark of pain.” (Pg. 207)He concludes, “The incorporation of reconciliation into a black theology needs no justification. Reconciliation is an integral part of the gospel… God in Christ is reconciling in the world and Christians are called to be agents of this reconciling gospel… Racism, by developing a cleavage between blacks and whites, renders the gospel of no effect. The gospel is only accepted fully where the ‘walls of partition’ are broken down between man and man. There are no exceptions. Reconciliation in our social climate includes a ‘cross’ for all Christians, black and white. The cross for whites is repentance based upon the full awareness of what ‘whiteness’ means in a society where whites are beneficiaries and blacks are victims… blacks race a real challenge when asked to extend the possibility of reconciliation to the oppressor. Our cross is forgiveness… For whites to expect blacks to be reconciled to them under oppressive conditions… is inhuman and unchristian. Reconciliation can only take place when blacks as well as whites are free to affirm their authentic selfhood and peoplehood… The only Christian way in race relations is a liberating experience of reconciliation for the white oppressor as well as for the black oppressed. This is what a black political theology is all about, and its message is to the whole church of Christ.” (Pg. 221-222)Roberts is one of the major black theologians, and his books are “must reading” for anyone seriously studying the subject.
