With its refined cover, silver gilded pages, a greater number of pages, and more variety, it is "Beaches" grown-up sister.Every bit as colorful, it's even more breathtaking. Shots are mostly scenic, with some lifestyle ones interspersed.If, like I, you are strictly a beach person, don't be put off: Surf, Pool (my fave! A throwback to Esther Williams days), Sand, and Isles comprise at least half the book — but I still enjoyed viewing the rest.

What a treat to have found this book while browsing for interior design books to place on a foyer console table! The front cover immediately sucked me in because I love photography such as this. Although incorrect, I like to call such photos the “little person†photo where the people are small against a beautiful, vast backdrop. I can’t wait to place this on my coffee table so friends and family can browse through its pages. Gray Malin’s words in the book are few from what I’ve gathered since page 92, but so well written. Short and sweet is what I appreciate. The book is also beautiful and substantial.
This is a gorgeous, dream inspiring book. The perfect dull, winter day escape. Malin captures his subjects in such a simple, but mesmerizing way that you’re completely captivated. I could stare at these pages for hours.
Awesome book, but slightly damaged on one corner. We decided it wasn't worth the hassle to return.

Wow. Just...wow. After loving Silber's debut novel last year, I bought the digital copy of WHGP to read on release day. And I did - the whole thing, in one day, including during the hours I was at work. (To my employer: sorry/not sorry. Honestly I didn't have a choice in the matter.) This book is excellent, necessary, and literally un-put-downable from cover to cover. It is also the single most engaging account I've ever read of personal loss and its aftermath, not to mention a searingly honest portrait of family dysfunction. This book is a must-read for anyone who has had or will have to live through the unthinkable (spoiler: that's everyone, eventually).The narrative is both fresh and timeless. The author's treatment of her younger self is hilarious and incisive, with accounts of teenage hijinks that can't not make you smile. (Example: of her time serving as a dormitory Hall Assistant with her best friend Lilly: "We had to make sure everyone was present in a fire drill. We had to attend the fire drill. We had to have not pulled the fire alarm ourselves." HAH!) We follow her through the excruciating death of her beloved father, into a shell-shocked post 9/11 adulthood full of wry humar and artistic struggle. If you've ever been a smart, creative young woman, or loved one, you'll connect with this narrator early and often. Silber's portrayals of young love and true-blue friendship are both incredibly specific and utterly universal.These friendships, and the guidance of such understated heroes as Rabbi Syme, provide moral sustenance as our narrator undergoes the excruciating challenge of grieving her father. This begins with a eulogy, which she must deliver in the face of impressively toxic family dynamics. As Silber writes, "Dad came from a family where nothing bonded you together like dark, horrible secrets." But with sharp wit, vivid imagery and bottomless love, Silber is determined to tell the truth about her father, a man who loved integrity, baseball and Bill Murray. The result is as heartbreaking as it is inspiring.At the core of this book is a story of love so deep that it goes on after death, of love that must be borne because it will never go away. Deeply developed and artfully wrought themes of resilience make this a highly satisfying read. This is that rare memoir written with the style and structure of a page-turner novel. Come for Silber's impeccably timed gallows humor, stay for the insights that might just get you through the worst periods of your life. This book would make for a great movie. Wow, Alexandra Silber has written a book, that is hard to put down. The early part of the book has the innocence of Salinger and John Irving, the openness of the adolescent who looks to share her view of the world and the love and admiration for her Dad, Michael. She writes of him as the "greatest" and they seem matched in her most profound interests. He is an older Dad and doesn't seem to miss a beat in being there for everything in her life. Then comes the 2nd half, as illness and his tragic passing before his time. The story becomes a "How To" of coping, with the loss of the rock of her life, and she does it with time and the help of her musical and stalwart friends and an exceptional Mom. She takes her father forward in all endeavors and speaks to him(so do I not her Dad but my own Sam). Alexandra is talented in myriad ways musically, acting, and her other novel called , "After Anatefka" sp. She is an exceptional talent, and I look forward to her next efforts. GET IT TODAY

Just finished reading "Hearts Afire: The Story of Moonwhistle School". I was very fortunate to work with the writer, Lee Marcus, and her husband Bull Muse in the early '90s in this wonderful family day care that was in no way just a place to stick your kids. Lee's passion for providing the best environment for learning and discovery was catching and inspiring. There was magic afoot, I had no doubt at the time. Reading it now brings back so many good memories, and more insight into the large hearted person that is Lee. I learned so much and will always treasure that time. PLEASE read her book!
Marcus not only has a clear-eyed, deeply-considered philosophy for educating the young child, which if put into place world-wide would cause a profound, peaceful revolution, SHE CAN WRITE! I laughed and cried and couldn't put it down. I gave it to both of my daughters. Anyone who has any reason to be around kids should read it. It's a delightful memoir as well as an important study of how best to help young minds unfold and grow, told by an incredibly wise and loving person.
Just finished this thought provoking book by Lee Marcus.The methodology of early childhood development inspired by the author in her telling of the Moonwhistle Story is inspirational. Children thrive if given copious amounts of love and the freedom to define their own potential. Lee, Bull, and the entire Moonwhistle staff allowed their charges to learn and interact with their peers in a non confrontational atmosphere filled with everyday activities. Found myself wishing all young children could be so lucky! Wonder what they are doing now....

I was gifted this book by the author, Lee Marcus, a wonderful woman who my husband I hold very dear to our hearts (that's why it won't appear as a "verified purchase" from Amazon).From the moment I met Lee, I knew she was someone very special... and this is a very special story. It begins by her life as she turns 40 (which I'm also about to do) and undergoing a midlife crisis of sorts (ditto). She offers a very unfiltered glimpse of her life in the Bay Area, as she drastically switches careers and finds her true calling and reunites with an equally fascinating man (Bull) from her past.I don't want to give away too much of the book, but I've actually dog-eared and post-it marked about a quarter of it, because she offers up a quite remarkable way to interact with young children. My husband and I are trying for our first child, and this will serve as a manual of sorts to remember how magical the world is to someone who sees, for the first time, a caterpillar turn to a butterfly, socks transforming into puppet people: but also how earth-shattering witnessing a violent act between other children can be and what it feels like the very first time your heart swells with the pain of sadness.This is one of those books you will happily lose sleep and read with a flashlight because you won't want to put it down, and you get anxious when you realize there's only ten more pages before you reach the other side of the cover!
Yes it's about a pre-school, a pretty perfect school. But it's also about following your heart, your mind and your gut to make your dreams come true. We all don't get a chance to do that and "Hearts Afire" tells you what it feels like. You will smile along with the Moon Whistle kids and maybe cry a little bit but it is an adventure you will not regret being part of.
The author Lee Marcus writes her story about following her dreams of opening her own daycare. This book talks about early childh0od education/daycare. I enjoyed the read and felt part of Lee's team as she was reading it. Anyone in daycare or early childhood education must put this on thier to read list.

I absolutely loved the class I took that used this book and learned a ton using it
This is a very good book. I'm not good at economics at all and this book is very good at explaining ideas to non-econ people. Some chapters are a bit on the long side but if you take the time to read this text you will have a better understanding of things you probably didn't understand before you read this book..which I can't say for many economics books.
I was very happy purchasing this book because it was very cheap compared to the prize in my college bookstore. It's also in very good condition.
I ordered this book from Warehouse Deals, an Amazon subsidiary. Warehouse Deals sent the wrong book. However, Amazon quickly issued a refund and a return shipping label, but I had to re-order. Unfortunately, the mix-up means I will not have this book for the start of my Public Finance class.
The book arrived in the great condition it was said to be in and I received it in the timeframe indicated. I have no complaints.

This book gives a very vast description about all grass. If you are having trouble with your grass this will not solve the problem or give you answers. It simply tells you about all sorts of grass and where it grows. Oh ya, and they talk about different types of weeds. Not on how to correct them.
Lots of great information, but I do wish there were actual photos rather than colorless illustrations for some of the information presented. Otherwise, following this book will lead to better lawn care.
A great starter guide for those new to lawn care and a little beyond. I'm a new home owner who inherited a lawn with some problems. I bought this book to learn the basics of lawn care and to start my spring lawn rehab. Just finished the project and awaiting the results.I have no comparison, but the book was what I expected, including everything from starting a new lawn, general lawn maintenance and rehabbing an old lawn.
This book covered so many topics and proved many of myths to be incorrect. Very easy to read and covered some interesting information about a wide variety of things from starting a new lawn, strategies sports teams use for their fields(yes), species of grass, maintaining your lawn and even ways to dress up your yard/house. l have pages ear marked and I look back to this book often.
Great book with a lot of helpful insights. I was a little disappointed that it didn't have full color pictures, but you still gain a lot of insight and knowledge from Mellow, a pro in the lawn care industry.

The publisher has automatically "updated" my original purchased of this Kindle book and others (Hardy Boys volumes 1-4) and replaced it with this awful modern version. I feel that I have been ROBBED of the book that I purchased in 2009. Amazon says they cannot return the book that I purchased as the decision to upgrade came from the publisher. I am disappointed in this version and angry that this update happened without my permission. I advise turning off the automatic update option in your Kindles - maybe you can avoid this happening to you.
I definitely recommend the Hardy Boys novels. This is the original version, and has a 5th-6th grade reading level. The books are part of the AR Book program, so your kids can test on them. They present some challenging older words and ideas, which I enjoyed explaining to my son. The mysteries are appropriate for girls or boys, and are quite intriguing to the end. You will find no inappropriate words or innuendo, which is refreshing in this day of early lost innocence.
I bought these for my son at the recommendation of his grandfather who read the books himself as an unmotivated pre teen. The series inspired him to become an avid reader and productive member of society. With any luck this collection will keep my son away from gangs, drugs, and the poserers of the Celtic dance scene. His grandfather is the crazy doctor guy in Independence Day.
His eyes lit up when this Hardy Boys volume set arrived. He has had hours of enjoyment reading these clasics, and I do not have to force him to do summer reading so that he would not be "rusty" when school starts. It is so refresing to have him run up to me as an excited twelve-year old to tell me what he just read. As he finishes the books, he can't wait to tell me the ending and if he thought he had almost fiugured out the clues. I would advise all parents to get the kiddos off the computers and cell phones long enough to enjoy reading the classics that will live on. A good book can take one to all kinds of adventures and places, and the Hardy Boys does just that!!
This is a great mystery-action-adventure story where the Hardy Boys stumble upon a ring of opium smugglers importing dope from a Chinese supplier named Li Chang through a hidden port.Make sure you read the uncensored version from 1927, not the ridiculous and absurd rewrite from 1959. Besides crude censorship, the rewrite is also incoherent since several chapters were ripped out. The '27 version is available used or in the reprint by Applewood Books.Although McFarlane's original version of the book takes a little less credulity to enjoy, it's still hardly "literature." Nevertheless, the action is just right for 8-10 year olds. This book keeps mine on the edges of their seats. Frankly, more sophisticated action-adventure might be confusing to persons their age.The book has some stereotypes and language that would be received with offense since the latter half of the 20th century, but it is an honest and benign vignette of American culture in its day. I'm glad some things have changed in the last 90 years, but I don't see any good coming from hiding the past.
This book and the series are still incredible all these years later..... I first read them as a nine year old and now I am gifting them to children in my life. Yes, they are old fashioned but they are clean and innocent and I don't have to worry about reading each one again to see if it is appropriate before I give them as a gift. :)
I have to agree with another reviewer's comments. I read every Hardy Boys book growing up, and when I discovered they were available for the Kindle I started to purchase the entire series again, to rekindle some of that joy I first experienced. And I LOVED that they were using the original covers . . . they transported me back to my youth as much as the stories themselves. So you can imagine how angry I was when I found the publisher had chosen to update my purchase with a garish cover not worth the ink it took to produce. Without my permission, no less. In any event, instead of looking forward to purchasing and reading the entire series once more, I will--because I have no guaranty that what I buy will remain as I bought it--spend my money elsewhere. I'm sure the publisher feels this 'update' is a shrewd decision on their part to move the Hardy Boys into more modern times. But by trying to do so they have lost the very essence of the book's appeal to readers such as myself. Naughty publisher! Bad, bad publisher!
Fantastic box set of books and my 9 year old loves these! This was excellent value for money and I only paid $22 with Amazon Prime but there was a $39.99 sticker on the box set so clearly I got a good deal!
