Although my kids have not made it through all the classical series set of books we've purchased I can say the yard beautiful books, well made & a wonderful addition to our homeschool library!
A great easy read for my boys. I will defiantly be purchasing more books from this series. The print is a great size and all the chapters are well balanced.

Sherlock Holmes was my childhood favorite. When I bought this book for my son (9 yr), I wasn't sure if he will enjoy it as much as I did, and it turned out he loves it. It proves the long lasting magic of this classic reading.
Classic Starts: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes features abridged versions of six short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The language is simplified for younger readers, but the essence of the original stories is not compromised. The book includes "A Scandal in Bohemia", "The Red-Headed League", "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle", "The Greek Interpreter" and "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons".There are several nice black and white illustrations to complement each story. My only criticism of the illustrations is that Watson seems too old. Dr. Watson was only a few years Sherlock Holmes' senior, but is depicted as much older in several screen adaptations. The illustrations in this book seem to be based more on the screen versions of the characters than the original Sidney Padget drawings. Padget's illustrations show the two men to be much closer in age. However, this is a very minor quibble on my part. The age difference will likely help young children differentiate between Holmes and Watson.The modern, easy-to-read language and abridged format in this book make these classic stories accessible to younger readers who may find the complex vocabulary or length of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original work too challenging. This would be a great choice for a 7-10 year old who enjoys mysteries but might not be ready to tackle the Sherlock Holmes books on their own just yet. Classic Starts: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes also includes discussion questions to help broaden the reader's understanding of the stories.

This book blew me away! It's extremely highly detailed with millions (not really but seems like it) of pictures. I mean, the book is loaded with pictures. It's also a heavy book (even as a paperback) with 320 pages. It is very well written and thought out. I wish someone would do this with Motorhomes. For a collector, or an RVer who is in love with the Vintage RV world, this book is an absolute must have!! I ran across this book in my local book store downtown Denver and paid well over this price ($25). To be honest, to have all of this info in one book and there are ridiculous amounts of pictures, I'd have easily paid more.
Every member of my family has enjoyed thumbing through this book. The illustrations are gorgeous. It’s modern & well thought out. We were happy to see the Aloha spread :) We have a 1967 Aloha. This book will be a permanent fixture on our coffee table.

I bought the first version 35 years ago, when my parents were the aging ones. I was lazy & put off reading it until "someday." Big mistake. Now I AM the "aging parent", & I finally got around to reading it, & I WISH I had read it 35 years ago, it would have made both my life AND my parents MUCH EASIER. It is extremely thorough in describing the social, financial & family issues involved in caring for elderly relatives, usually (but not always) parents. It is not a question of IF you will have these concerns in the future (whether for your parents or yourself), but WHEN, so the sooner you read this (& probably some others after you find what some of the major issues are), the better prepared you will be for the inevitable. I bought multiple copies for our children, in hopes they will learn from my experience.
Great perspective on relationship issues. Glad I bought it.
Everyone should read this book. They give an excellent lay of the land and help the reader understand the basic issues.
This book is an excellent read for those dealing with aging parents, regardless whether it's going well or not. Lots of great insights into the aging process and the mental and emotional issues involved as well, for all parties involved.Lots of excellent advice and information about organizations, etc., that can provide help and support for your family and your parents.It would be a good read even if your parents are only in their 50s or 60s, to help prepare you for what's coming. But it pretty much a "must read" for those whose parents are in their 70s or older.
If you want to feel young, go out and do something you've been wanting to do for yourself. Want to feel responsible, pick this up. Lots of tips about what you're going to do to keep on top of matters as the folks become like you will right behind them. Warning: By looking at this book on amazon, you'll end up with the most sobering home page suggestions. Read the book if you need to, but then go find a cd or dvd for yourself.
Boy did I need this book. My Grandmother was getting older and I didn't know what to do and this book gave me a lot of advice on how to help her grow old her way, with a little help from me. It's not easy to admit that you need help, but it's nice to know that you get some of the answers from a book that someone took the time to write.
I bought the book as a reference text, but became engrossed in the book. It is much more substantive than anything else I have seen on the market. I can't recommend it enough to anyone who is an Adult Child with Aging parents.
This book is a first rate essential one to have if one has an aging parent or, indeed, is fast becoming one. I can't think of anything they missed or glossed over. And it is very well written to boot!

This book has a good underlying principle (I call it common sense parenting), but 3/4 of the text is unnecessary. The author thinks she is very witty, but I didn't find it very funny. Reads more like a novel. I went through and highlighted relevant info for my husband (there's no way he would make it through otherwise - would have gotten bored by chapter 2), and it turned out that I only found one or two helpful bits per chapter. If there was a Cliff notes version, I would have been much happier with it.
I lived in Europe in my early twenties and spent quite a bit of time in France. I remember noticing how well behaved the kids were. Fast forward 15 years and I have a 16 month old and another baby on the way. I was thinking someone had to have written a book on the French philosophy of raising kids. This book is has great insight on that. I really enjoyed this book and it was a really easy read. I would highly recommend it.
As is the case with many books comparing American parenting styles with that of other countries, some potential readers have felt opinionated - even defensive - before even buying the book.While I certainly haven't concluded that French parenting is "right" and American parenting is "wrong", this intriguing book deserves a fair chance - one obtained by reading it - but some initial "reviews" were written by people who simply refused to read a book comparing American and French parenting techniques.So what will will you find in Bringing Up Bebe? What makes this one worth a look?To start with, the author, Pamela Druckerman, does not come off as someone who is crazy about France, let alone French parenting - at first. As she writes early on, "I'm not even sure I like living here" although she does change her tune later. She came to her opinions about French parenting slowly and she backs up her main points with plenty of research studies as well as techniques she learned from French parents and parenting authorities. As a result she concludes that "the French have managed to be involved without becoming obsessive. " They aren't waiting on their kids hand and foot and they don't assume that they have to push their children to succeed. Even so, she notes that she hadn't thought she was supposed to admire French parenting. So consider her a reluctant convert to French methods of parenting.Druckerman observes that there doesn't appear to be a relentless drive to get babies and children to various lessons or such activities as early swimming lessons. A neighbor was content to let her children simply find ways to play, often with old toys or perhaps by exploring her outdoor environment.Meals are also handled differently with set times for eating and with children being expected to exert enough self-control to wait hours in between meals. Vegetables, varied types of cheese, and other foods American kids might snub are not only served but actually eaten.Then there are the studies. They are certainly food for thought and perhaps some spirited debate. One study notes that mothers in Columbus, Ohio find child care twice as unpleasant as mothers in Rennes, France. There is the University of Texas study that concludes that French mothers aren't concerned with accelerating their children's cognitive development or academic achievement. Instead, they are comfortable with letting their kids simply be children while they still can. The author cites another study which indicates that 90 percent of fifteen-year-olds eat their main meal with their parents - compared to 67 percent of those in the United States.The author took detailed notes as she observed French parents. She learns that they expect their babies to start sleeping through the night within no more than a few months - or even in the first month. They ask Druckerman if her baby is "doing her nights" (sleeping through the night).Admittedly, a certain number don't...but a fair number do because their parents use "the Pause" , not responding immediately to a baby's cries. When Druckerman tries using "the Pause" her own baby starts sleeping through the night, although...to be fair...she does wait until her baby is more than a few months old, unlike the French parents she describes.Even infant mortality rates are lower in France, 57 percent lower than in America. There is an emphasis on a calm pregnancy and not eating too much. This doesn't mean starving but an overly obese mother isn't necessarily serving a baby's health. I won't stress this point too much because there could be many other factors that determine the possible difference in infant mortality rates between one country and another.To sum it up, the author has discovered the "wisdom" of French parenting and has written a book that seems to be aimed at imparting that wisdom to American readers. Druckerman also seems to be encouraging parents to try and change the way American parents perceive children,to not base their lives so much around the kids. To be clear, the parenting advice here is centered on children, not teenagers, as French teenagers are given more freedom but in Druckerman's view also seem to have less cause to rebel.I did have some issues with this book. The first chapter has far too much info about Druckermans' career before moving to France as well as her time meeting and dating her husband-to-be. This takes up an entire chapter. I wanted to get to the parenting observations more quickly. The book consists mostly of personal observations and Druckerman's parenting experiences which are also peppered with interviews with such people as the French "Doctor Spock" as well as other experts. I'm sure it will be controversial and from what I've seen and read it already is. Even so, this book deserves to be judged based on its contents.
I lived in France for year and had already been introduced to the books, French Women Don't Get Fat and French Kids Eat Everything so I was already a bit biased towards French culture. I did notice during my time in France that kids would sit in bars drinking milk or juice while mothers and fathers had wine and in general the kids seemed calm and even tempered. That said, I think the book offers one perspective on some of the differences between French and American children and why. I found it to be an interesting read. Her writing style is light, conversational which makes for an easy read. My big issue with the book is that she emphasizes in nearly every chapter, multiple times that she is middle class and that she is talking and gathering opinions from middle class parents. The few times it was mentioned, I just assumed it was frame to help the reader understand the groups she spoke with but she reemphasized it repeatedly throughout the book and after some time it seemed like bragging or being condescending.As well, I think she underestimated or played down some significant differences between parenting for women in France and the US. She noted the free children, free health insurance, education, etc. but that's a big, big deal. There is no federally mandated, full-paid, maternity leave in the US. American mother's are at the mercy of whatever their employer wants to offer and FMLA which only guarantees 2/3 of pay for 6 weeks. French mother's get 3 full months, paid. Childcare is not free to American mothers those 6 FMLA weeks; a good daycare for an infant 5 days a week can easily cost $2k a month or more. French mother's pay nothing more than their taxes for creche. There are not what's sounds like an army of free options to help a mother breastfeed, retighten and whatever after delivery for American mothers and preschools aren't necessarily free depending where you live, university isn't free for much later, etc. etc. French mother's have a lot of help.I'm with the whole well-behaved child, and not turning yourself into a muppet just to be mother i.e. giving up adult life and adult language but perhaps it is a bit easier to be that type of mother and raise that type of child when there's more state resources in a society that values and wants to protect motherhood rather than one that creates and obstacle course for women who want to be mothers and working professionals.I actually really enjoyed the book and plan on trying some techniques from it, but I could've done without Druckerman's classist, rose-colored "if only" take on motherhood, where she ignores hards truths and significant obstacles for American mothers.

When I first picked up this book, I didn't realize it was a 'sequel' to Last of the Mohicans. YUCK, I groan, and read it anyways. About 100 pages in I'm toting the book everywhere with me, reading it on coffee breaks, at traffic jams, on lunch hour, before work, after work, during meetings, etc.You get the idea.The story is your typical sweet 'romance' idea. City girl moves to the country to teach school and meets a boy. Only that's where the 'normal' stops and the breathtaking begins.Donati doesn't waste any time. Directly into the first chapter, we meet Elizabeth and her man, Nathaniel. Donati's prose is so compelling that you immediately /know/ how she wants her characters pictured just from a few simple words. Read the opening paragraph again--you'll see what I mean.The characters are what truly make this book memorable. I laughed at Elizabeth's pert words and ready blushes, and could relate to her unfamiliarness in the wilderness. I cried at Nathaniel's earnest charm, his teasing humor, and his steadfast loyalty to his family.This is a book where the 'back-scene' characters shine as well. Hannah is a gem. Many Doves and Runs-From-Bears will have you starry-eyed over their romance as well.I really can't say enough good things about Sara Donati. Usually when I take the time to write a review about a book, it's because I dislike it so much I want to warn the other readers away.I want to warn you TOWARDS this one! Run out to the store and get it. I promise you'll love it.
Loving the characters in this book! For someone who has grown accustomed to the strong character of Claire Randall Fraser in Outlander, Elizabeth Middleton holds my attention, and she gives as good as she gets. Smart, educated, tough, strong-willed, courageous - and she'll kill if she must. In return, she marries a man who compares more than favorably with Jamie Fraser (Outlander): a white man raised as an Indian, skilled in hunting, tracking, living in the wild, accepting of his own responsibility while not denying his wife her own sense of individualism and singular personality. This is bound to remain a favorite for a long time.
I was looking for something to read, and to be honest, the description of this book and the subsequent books didn't seem to appeal to me. BUT I got really desperate for something to read so I just jumped in and bought the bundle of 6 books in this series and I am so glad that I did. I really LOVED these books. There was so much happening all the time that the drama kept me going. I won't compare these to Diana Gabaldon as some may have because for me that is comparing apples to oranges. The only similarity is that they take place in the same time frame. This is a truly great series. Give them a try. I don't think you would be disappointed.
This book has a lot of good going for it: beautiful setting, likeable, distinctive characters, a focus on the struggle of every woman to be respected as a peer rather than property. But as I was reading it, I realized that the story has no real plot. Greed, sexism and racism seem are the drivers of all the action, with little of it making much sense when considered practically. It is only mildly believable that, for example, Richard Todd is at once deeply sentimental about the mountain and sociopathically bent on getting it. Similarly, the brother becomes fixated on taking the mountain from his own sister for purely selfish reasons. While I believe that people can be greedy, sexist and racist to the point that they behave badly, the rationale for these characters' deep hatred doesn't feel believable. That aside, the story is really just an exciting splice of a woman's life.
If you like the "Outlander" books, you will no doubt love this book. It tells of the time, shortly after the Revolutionary War, in up-state New York when native Americans were still trying to fit into the landscape that had been theirs for centuries. The main characters are Elizabeth and Nathaniel. This is their story done with all the color and passion of the times and the setting. I am thrilled to learn that there are 6 books in this series. I am a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. This book is written simarlly. The characters are so richly written that I felt I could easily and happily know them. This historical New York State is inviting and fascinating. Buy this book if you like historical romance. This book delivers. Enjoy!!
I just finished this book.First off, I am a huge Diana Gabaldon fan. I picked this up as a recommendation that I would look it since I love her work.I thought the beginning was choppy-the main character, Elizabeth, seemed a bit prim and proper for my taste. I’m so glad I kept at it though. By the end she has developed into a character I could truly love. But because it took me a while to get into the story, I can only give it 4 starsI bought the rest of the set, if that tells you anything.
This was by far more than just a great book; it was epic and I think I am in love with Nathaniel Bonner. The attraction that Elizabeth fought at first for this man was so cute at first and I loved the way she finally gave into her feelings for him. I never got bored with this book and if I didn't have to go to work I would have kept my head in this book from sunup to sundown. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. It's real, it's everything an epic novel should be.
I found this book recommended as a similar series to Outlander. So to any avid Outlander fans who have read the Outlander series at least twice, I found this series to be lacking. While there are some good historical facts and some romance between the main characters, it strongly lacks the 3 dimensional development of the story line and the characters, as were done so well in all of the Outlander series. I found myself very disappointed in this series. I read the first 2 and then quit halfway through the third book. I think this author is fairly good, but this book and series really missed the mark for me when comparing it to Diana Gabaldon and the Outlander series. I probably should not compare, but that is why I got this book in the first place, as an alternative to more Outlander novels.
