It is well written, engaging, and very useful in all respects.

this has become my early morning "read" on many days...i can handle only several pages worth though...what he says and the way he says it has really brought me to having quite a thoughtful look back over my life...what i've done...what i've chosen...the way i've been...it's been a little unnerving at times...i have a lot to look back over...for me, it is a very important book to be reading right now...i'm drawn back to it again and again as the days pass by...often, i re-read sections to hear it again...get it more clearly...take it in...it's proving to be quite the source of therapy for my soul, which is very important at age 79 and a fella is wondering a bit, did i do ok? and more deeply still, what was it all about?.......and maybe deeper still, who am i now.......really? i highly recommend this little volume if your soul needs some searching too!

It is too bad that many folks will discount this book because it is (was) written by a psychiatrist. It is equally bad that many Protestants will avoid the book because of its Catholic heritage. I believe that even worse still, there will be those who miss the wisdom inside the pages of this book, who could benefit from the guidance and spiritual insight during their seasons of the dark night."At the outset I must confess that I am no longer very good at telling the difference between good things and bad things." -The Dark Night of the Soul; Gerald May, M.D.I rather wish the title of this book had been different. I think it gives a false impression of what the subject really explores; although, it does address the dark night of the soul. May uses the backdrop of the writings from St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross to lay his foundation for his exploration of the phenomenon of the "dark night" or spiritual darkness (which might also be known as spiritual awakening or enlightenment). I have read quite extensively from both Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Their writings can be something of a bit archaic depending on the translation and they can be somewhat romanticized within the context of their poetic settings. I say this to make a point that they can sometimes be difficult to completely understand. Despite his academic and clinical background, Dr. May writes clearly and in a very personal voice that I find very easy to grasp. His writing is warm, friendly, and very down-to-earth. He takes complex ideas and difficult situations and makes easy conversation with them. Not only was I enlightened by what I read, I was also comforted by someone whom I believe shared understanding of my circumstances and experiences.What might be the greatest contribution of this book in my opinion is the synergy that Dr. May creates between the spirit and the psyche... perhaps another way of saying this is the convergence of the soul and the spirit. While some voices would discount the science of psychology, I believe it is helpful for us to understand the workings of the mind and soul. God instructs us to love Him with all our "heart, soul, mind, and strength." It is obvious then, we should pay attention to these various facets that make up the essence of human beings. It is my opinion that Gerald May handles this material with humility and reverence, which helps in bringing attention to the work of God in the process of the dark night. It might be for this reason that I most liked chapter five, Three Signs and Three Spirits, where May teaches at length about the psychology of the dark night... very, very good instruction here."As John makes clear, it is not God who disappears, but only our concepts, images, and sensations of God." -The Dark Night of the Soul; Gerald May (p.146)Another very helpful chapter to me was chapter six, The Dark Night Today, where May discusses the dark night in modern contexts. While there is no substitute for reading the translated original writings from John and Teresa, Dr. May's exploration is arguably one of the best companion guides I have read to date and I have several expositions on the writings of Teresa and John in my personal library.The book includes a very well annotated notes section and an exhaustive index at the end of the book. Personally, I think this is a book every Christian should read and I am very glad I did.

The dark night and related soul transformation was an unfamiliar school of thought to me. Through his experience with psychiatric practices and psychological therapy, Dr May discusses meditation and contemplation and it's role in our spiritual journeys from darkness into light. This book draws from many rich sources of research, writings, and spiritual oracles and leaders. I highly recommend this to anyone unfamiliar with the dark night, or Teresa or John, or who desire to know more about related spiritual contemplation and healing.

A deeply insightful book. Mr. May illuminates the concept of "Dark Night of the Soul" as defined in classic Christian literature. Even more important and valuable though, at least to me, is that he makes the core concept and inherent confusion about these times in our lives simpler to grasp, and thus easier to accept. This was one of those books that made me stop every few pages, wipe off a few tears, take a few deep breaths, and burrow into it again. His gentle, conscious writing style is much appreciated, as is the logic and heart with which he makes the case. I bought two copies for friends already!

May's The Dark Night of the Soul is remarkable. To me and my spouse, May's book is a perfect combination of psychiatrist's perspective transposed over a spiritual experience. I really appreciate May's "interpretation" of John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila's seminal works. I have tried to read some of their original writings - along with other Christian mystics - and the ancient grammar, syntax and vocabulary make their works less than convenient for the modern reader to sort through. May has done all the sorting and more; making their immensely wise observations of the dark night, perceptible and recognizable. I also noted May's important distinction - apart from other writer's of The Dark Night - that dark night is not usually a single event, but more likely an ongoing experience of spiritual encounter with God.

OH, this book is so great! I have turned back to it time and time again. It is not just a one time read - it continues to edify throughout all stages of spiritual growth. If you are already acquainted with St John of The Cross and basics of Christian mysticism and looking for some much needed insight into how to make sense of confusing battles and struggles within your soul - this book will be a BLESSING to you! I am very thankful to have found this book.

Patanjali's yoga sutras are a basic study of yoga science. They are simple and straight forward and carry depths of knowledge at the same time. Swami Vivekananda's commentaries on the sutras are majestic. They are alive and ever present. I can't believe that Swamisji wrote it so long ago. In one word, his commentaries are 'magnificent'! I highly recommend this book.

This interpretation of the sutras is one that touches me deeply. I can't imagine ever being done with this book. I get new insights from it every time I pick it one. It is a nice size to carry around, but it generally stays on my night stand. It would make a nice gift for any yogi.

This book is an English import of the book Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda. They just re-titled the book.You can buy that title from Amazon for less than the English edition, and at the same time by your purchase give support to the Vedanta movement that Swami Vivekananda started.

The content is great. I was hoping for a bit of a more modern version/translation. I was also hoping to see the Sutras in Sanskrit as well as an English translation. That is not the case with this book. They are only given in English. Not a bad price for the book but I will eventually buy another book that has exactly what I was looking for. :(

This volume is a collection of articles written in honor of Professor Sidney H. Griffith of the Catholic University of America. (Full disclosure: He supervised my doctoral dissertation.) "A Monastic Setting for the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel," by Alexander GolitzinWhat struck me as most interesting about this article was Golitzin's observation that this apocalypse was written at a time when what can popularly be called "end times fever" was gripping the Syriac-speaking Christian world in the aftermath of the conquest by Islam. As is typical in troubled times, a host of dire end-of-the-world scenarios was spun by Christian writers who were upset by the emergence of Islam. It's been since 2010, when I first got my Kindle, that I've read this series. I want to say the first book was either free or pretty cheap or I could have even splurged and purchased it. However it was discovered, I ended up purchasing the other two in the series because I became obsessed! I was disappointed when I had to wait for the fourth book in the series but I found out a little later that it was put on hold because of personal reasons. I hoped everything was ok and kept checking back. But imagine my surprise when I just found out recently the fourth was released in October of 2013!! And Sydney herself asked if I would like to review it. So I offered to re-read the first three and review the whole series here. So this is where we find ourselves here now, on the second day of our Sydney Somers week. (If you missed it yesterday, we had an exclusive cover reveal for a novella prequel to her Pendragon Gargoyles series. I even had the privilege of designing it!!!) So enough about my babble and let's get to the good stuff. :)We are immediately pulled into the story with Kennedy, who is the bartender at Pendragon's which is owned by Tristan and his siblings, threatening to hose down (with the water sprayer behind the bar) the hot to trot Tristan and another patron who were on the way to getting into a fight. I immediately thought, well this is going to be good. I could tell immediately, even through Kennedy's POV, that Tristan is an alpha from the jump so the hose thing took some lady balls on her part. But this event essentially kicked off the madness and heart pounding events of the story. Kennedy is sucked into the enchanting world of paranormal beings she had no clue existed. And she finds that she can no longer ignore the powerful draw she feels towards the mysterious Tristan. But there is danger that is lurking in the shadows, hanging the threat of death over her head. Talk about a downer.But Tristan is there to do anything he can to keep her safe. Including giving up his chance to unfreeze his brother from his constant gargoyle state. Throw in a bunch of action and some hot lovin', and you've got one guy I totally want at my back...and front. ;) I love a good alpha male but I also love when they are all,"do what I say now woman!" and then the next it's, "you are everything to me." It's enough to turn me to mush in a hot second. I loved how protective he is of Kennedy. And one part of the story had my heart aching for him and wanting to take all his hurts away. I was rooting hard for the two of them! And I was so happy with the outcome!This story has a ton of action and I loved how the tale of King Arthur and Merlin. My inner history nerd was having a field day with this new spin. It's so creative how everything is woven around some things we know, like the knights of the round table. I just loved it!!Check back each the rest of the week for the next three reviews!!

Sydney Somer's Primal Hunger is one of those stories that disappoint me, not for what it is, but for what it could be and yet isn't. Full of interesting mythos, a spunky heroine with a backbone, and an Alpha male to drool for, the building blocks exist to make this title a really fantastic paranormal romance. Unfortunately, the combination of the length of the story (far closer to novella than mass market paperback) and the focus on the sexual relationship between the two main characters, Kennedy and Tristan, kept this book from truly blossoming into a fully satisfying read for me. And that's a shame, because there really was a lot to like about Somer's writing style and creativity here.Ultimately, there just wasn't enough story to raise my appreciation for the book higher than three stars. I'm a huge fan of erotic fiction. I actually prefer my books with healthy, adult, explicit sex scenes that help define and enhance the romantic pairing between couples in paranormal romances, and I'm very open minded about sex in general. Flowery euphemisms and delicate wording are a turnoff - in life and in books. That being said, however, my preference is that the story comes first and the sex scenes be a part of that story, not the whole of the story. In Primal Hunger, the sex (while steamy, hot, and very erotic) was the center of the story and the plot and mythos about the gargoyles, wraiths, Avalon, King Arthur, Fae, as well as the development of the emotional side of Kennedy and Tristan's relationship, were more like random leaves being tossed around in the cyclone of the sexual relationship. That was such a shame, because I love gargoyles and wish there were more paranormal romances that featured them, and Arthurian novels have always been an interest of mine. By the end, I basically enjoyed Primal Hunger for what it is, but felt disappointed by all the missed opportunities to raise the bar. Still, I've got the second in the Pendragon Gargoyles series, Primal Attraction, so I'll be giving the series at least one more go.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are vivid, the mythology of the paranormal universe it is set in is interesting and compelling, the romance is fulfilling and the sex is great. But there were hints of so much more that just didn't get to be fully explored.I'm giving this book 4 stars because I really had fun reading it- DESPITE the fact that there seemed to be a hell of a lot more to the story than what I got. The book is definitely a romance- and I always enjoy a good paranormal romance, but there was just so much ELSE going on that it was almost a shame to spend so much time focused on the attraction between our two characters.I can't wait to read the second book, but I find myself drawn into the greater context of the world and hope to get more from the next books than just the romance. Lots of questions are left unanswered and the author makes interesting interpretations of standard paranormal mythos. I'd love to know more...Bottom line- good book. The story itself is fun. The characters are likeable and strong. The universe is interesting. I just wish it was maybe a little longer so that I didn't have to settle for all the HINTING Ms. Somers did at the larger context. It would be great to actually sink my proverbial teeth into more than just the romance...I'd love to see this series follow Tristan and Kennedy on their adventures, but something tells me later books will feature a different romance each time. That won't stop me from eagerly awaiting each one though!

I received this book as an advance copy this is my voluntarily giving review and my opinion.This Book was very interesting I like the gargoyle theme I like the references to King Arthur and his court I like the whole story line that they put up together I know there be a whole lot more to this series than anybody thought I think this was a very good read. I highly recommend this book because you would enjoy the storyline and the hot steamy sex

a beautiful and inspiring work. i am not surprised this has been a staple in the weaving world for decades. Princeton's revised expanded edition is a credit to academic publishing. though i am a painter, i found many useful additives to approach my art.

What a treat to see the weavings in this book and what Anni Albers has to say about it all, love her Peruvian influence.

The color edition, at last. My friend both loved it and coffee-tabled it. A great success.
