This is a wonderful book for the Southern gardener, with lists covering a vast range of possible problems and solutions. My one complaint--and it's a big one--is that the book doesn't have an adequate Table of Contents, nor does the index adequately address the problem. Either the beginning of each chapter or the existing, lame TOC should include a list of the lists in each section. As it is, you have to thumb through an entire chapter--if not the entire book--to find what you're looking for. As a result, my copy is bristling with better-than-nothing post-it flags.
This is an outstanding book. If I had any negative comment, it would be that it's overwhelming. I had borrowed this from a neighbor and decided to buy it so that I could spend more time deciding what trees to put in my backyard. But if you need to match size, soil, climate, etc. this is wonderful. So glad someone wrote all of this down!
I can't tell you how many plants I've lost because I chose the wrong plant. This book is the perfect resource for those of us that live in the south, are not professional landscapers but love our gardens. The book lists categories which let you know what thrives where, what flowers in the winter, what is invasive or fragile etc., etc.It's not a pretty book but its worth it's weight. I recommend.
I was really excited when I bought this book. I could envision exactly how it would help me. I read through the lists - most of them are useful. I could just see carrying it in the car, always. I stop at a nursery and find a plant that I absolutely love, but where do I put it? Sun? Shade? I can look up the plant and find all the different lists that it fits. All I have to do is turn to the index and - wait - WHAT INDEX? This book has what may be the most pitiful excuse for an index I have ever seen. It might as well not have one at all.As for the complaints about no photos, I can understand that. It is, after all, a book of 'Lists', not a book of plants. I believe that one could still find the plant that fits a particular location or need based on the list, and then go to another reference to Iearn about the plant itself. This I can still do even though I cannot use the book as I had hoped. For this reason I give the book 2 stars instead of 1. It makes the book less helpful but not totally useless.So yes, the book has potential, but unless a new edition comes out with a MUCH improved index, I can't recommend it to anyone.
This 186 page book is exactly as the name implies, a book of more than 200 lists. Whether you are looking for annuals that bloom from spring to frost or perennials that attract butterflies there's a list of appropriate plants with botanical names and relative southern region. Each list includes a short narrative describing the list and it's application.This book is about finding plants that meet certain requirements, not about how to care for plants. It is excellent for it's intended purpose.
Any serious southern gardener needs this book. Ms. Chaplin has gone to great lengths to cover every conceivable situation in your yard and list plants, shrubs, and trees that are suitable for them. I have many gardening books, but I have to say this is by far the most practical, most useful one in my collection.

If you are a gardener you must purchase this book immediately. It is 20 years old but so chock full of information about which plants grow best where and with what other plants. I was so glad for another Master Gardener friend to show me hers and even more delighted to find it on Amazon.

I have been a fan of the scholarship of Donald S. Lopez Jr. for a long time: His "Prisoner's of Shangri-la" and "Tibetan Religion in Context" shattered a lot of myths I had held on the topic and that permeated popular culture both within and outside convert Buddhist circles. Although he has two books on myths about Buddhism and the Buddha that go into little known elements of Theravada history, Lopez tends to focus on myths of Mahayana buddhism and the critical studies around it, and particularly on Vajrayana variants. This was different in that he was dealing with a text, although he did a treatment on the "Tibetan Book of the Dead," and a text, while important to Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism, is foundational for Tendei, Shin, Shingon, and most dramatically Nichiren Buddhism.Lopez starts with the texts seem origins in the Sanskrit literature of the Indo-Greek world of Bactria. There is some speculations on the exact nature of the shift here. The secret doctrine elements of the text set it apart from the other two famous Mahayana sutras readily found in English, the Heart Sutra (which isn't really even a Sutra) and the Diamond Sutra (foundational for Chan/Seon/Zen). Lopez then talks us through the reception in China, the development of Chinese esoteric Buddhism, the shift to Japan, Japanese devotional and esoteric Buddhism(s), the develop of Nichiren Buddhism in particular, the reception of the Lotus Sutra in French and American scholarship, the Development of the modern Nichiren sects, their consolidation in the Meiji restoration at the same time as French-English scholarship on the Lotus sutra begins, and then the post-war development of Nichiren outside of Japan.Fascinating and brings up many of the problems of the history of Buddhism and the Mahayana developments outside of India and outside of their original Sanskrit context. Easily readable despite the obscurity of a lot of the topic, and offers a good history of Mahayana developments in both Japan and America in particular through the lens of the Lotus Sutra's reception.
Before I start to study the Lotus Sutra, I wanted a background, a primer, so to speak, before I began. Very easy reading and now, am even more excited to jump into the actual Sutra. Highly recommend!
Half of a book...where is the rest? A good read...I liked it...but I felt that the book missed so much. How bout a chapter concerning metaphysical aspects? The notion that we can attain Buddhahood in our present form, just as we are, is at the heart of contemporary Buddhism. Only the Lotus Sutra...and only the Lotus Sutra taught this idea. The 16th Chapter teaches the eternity of life...the idea of rebirth is implicit. Two huge concepts that were not even mentioned. Buddhism evolves and adapts to suit the environment in which if flourishes...and that my friend, is why we practice Buddhism and not Shakyamunism.
This was a gift for my son, and he tells me he's enjoying it.

I worked at the Red Apple from 1970 - 1972. I worked in the snack bar for one summer and then as Sal's helper in the kitchen for the next 2 years or so. I learned a lot about work ethic from Sal and Herbie. Herbie was a great mentor. When I quit he sat down with me and talked about life and the importance of going after what you wanted. Nothing is handed to you. He was one of the 4 or 5 key people I met in my life that touched me in a very positive way. My experience at the Apple was positive. I live in Arizona now and whenever I go back home to Sloatsburg, I always drive by the Apple. I have a picture of how it looks now (a real shame) on my wall in my home office. A remembrance of my beginnings. Thank you Ms. Freed Lindenblatt for writing this book.
This book brought back so many (good) memories. I live only 20 minutes or so from the... now gone but not forgotten, restaurant. I remember it when you could hardly find a parking space in front of the building. Sometimes you'd have to go around back in order to park. The smell (aroma) coming out of the building on a warm summer day was heavenly. Everyone from family to on- the- road salesman to truck drivers to couples on a date would be there at any given time. The service was friendly and the the food was great....especially the coffee. Top notch !It wasn't a fancy restaurant by any means but more like a (large) warm roadside cafe....which it was.It brings back memories of a much simpler time. A much less stressful time. A much nicer time.
Used to live on Long Island and my mother used to talk about this place on trips upstate with her family. I've only been there once while on the way to Sterling Forest and enjoyed the stop very much. Much better then those rest stops on the Thruway. When i learned there was a book about this place i had to buy it. Enjoyed very much what i read so far and looked forward to reading the rest.
This book brings back k the story of an "institution", but also of a different time in the history of NY. Great memories, well written.
Brings back many childhood memories. On my way to summer camp that would be our first stop. If you were lucky you'd have enough money to buy a hot-dog or soda. Anyone that's as old as I am (and that's old) and traveled that route remembers the 'Red Apple'.
This book was very entertaining for me. As a child before interstate 17 there was old rt. 17 that was the way we would drive to upstate N.Y. so we used to stop there quite often. It brought back memories. Very well written to bring back those memories.
I so enjoyed reading of the history and wonderful memories of this iconic landmark. I remember my fond memories of the Red Apple Rest as a kid. My grandfather used to take us there as part of trips to and from Bear Mountain. This book is so well written I hated to put it down. I would love to have postcards of this wonderful place.
You will really enjoy this book if you happened to vacation in the Catskills during the 1950's and especially if you always stopped at the Red Apple on the way up. It really brings back old memories of a kid growing up.

I am a veterinary student and bought this book with the understanding that I would have E-access. After emails from Iowa State saying and I quote: "Iowa State does not support e books external to our students. The contract expired and we will not do so in the future.". I'm very upset and feel that I have been duped. I contacted Iowa state and this contract expired over a YEAR ago.Amazon, don't let me down, do something about this. E-access would have been great, but i wouldn't have purchased the book for so much if i would have known this was no available.

This may not be the only Instant Pot cookbook you'll ever need (that's up to you to decide) but it does offer a wide variety of recipes (200 in all) for every taste. Carnivores and Vegetarians will both find it useful. It has everyday American fare like Barbecue Baked Beans and Chicken Noodle Soup, and international dishes like Palek Paneer and Beef Pho. The book itself is beautiful, printed on glossy white paper, with many photos. The colors and font are easy to read, even for my older eyes. The stitched binding allows it to lay flat when open. Recipes are easy to read and follow, with complete, clear directions for the novice or IP pro. Chapters include the usual suspects, plus Vegetarian (meatless mains) and Pantry (broths, sauces, jams, pickles and more). There is no Index, but all recipes are listed in the ToC, under their chapter headings. Extensive cooking charts are in the back of the book. I've cooked three recipes so far, and found them easy to follow with good results. I especially liked the Salade Nicoise with Oil-Packed Tuna on page 142. Cooking the potatoes, eggs and green beans together and using our favorite olive-oil packed tuna makes this a quick take on the classic salad. This is a good thing, as my husband asked me to add it to our regular rotation.I wasn’t sure how to classify this cookbook, as classic, with familiar recipes, or modern, with many interesting combinations. I think it’s a little of both. It has a large number of basic recipes including boiled eggs (soft or hard), yogurt, basic beans, basic rice, and so on. It also has classic non-adventurous recipes for things like split pea soup, Mexican rice, cream of tomato soup, ground beef chili, penne with marinara sauce, cod with lemon-dill sauce, honey-mustard chicken wings, a rotisserie-style chicken, smothered pork chops, shepherd’s pie, beef stew, green beans amandine, creamed corn, and many more. Most of the recipes in the chapters dealing with sides and desserts will be familiar to everyone. The book also includes a lot of modern and international recipes that may not appeal to the classic meat-and-potatoes crowd.Many of the recipes are an interesting riff on the classic, but not too far off, so don't let the titles put you off. I don’t mind making substitutions, but when it comes to cooking on the fly and making things up based on what’s in my pantry, I’m not there yet. I prefer to work from a master recipe, using ingredients that I’m pretty confident will work in place of a listed ingredient. This is especially true when pressure cooking, where wholesale substitutions might affect the outcome. I think most of the more interesting recipes in this cookbook are like that, not markedly different from familiar recipes. The instructions throughout this book are so complete, making no assumptions about your cooking skills, that making substitutions will be easy for all but the most timid cook. For example, the Rosemary-Dijon Pot Roast differs from classic Pot Roast only in the selection of rosemary and dijon mustard for seasoning and shallots instead of onions. It would be no big thing to use your favorite seasonings in place of the rosemary and mustard, and a sliced small onion in place of the shallots. Another example; Macaroni and Cheese with Gouda and Caramelized Onions. For a classic Mac and Cheese, substitute your favorite easy melting cheese(s) for the Gouda, omit the butter and onion, and forget about the Saute step (it's used for cooking the onion).So I would say it has something for everyone, although I am absolutely certain that there will be some reviews claiming that all of the recipes use weird, hard-to-find ingredients, and others claiming that the recipes are too basic and not interesting enough. But this is true of every cookbook sold on Amazon, isn't it? Note: I purchased this cookbook at a warehouse store, prior to Amazon's release date.
Full disclosure, I was one of several secondary recipe testers on this book. Out of dozens of recipes that I made from the book, these are a few of my favorites: Roasted Red Pepper & Goat Cheese Frittata (p. 31), Cinnamon Swirl Bundt Cake (p. 40), Mac & Cheese with Gouda & Carmelized Onions (p. 65), Pepperoncini Pot Roast (p. 223). The recipes are easy to follow, and are made from fresh ingredients. This book & the Instant Pot are truly made for each other.
If you’re a new or veteran instant pot user this cookbook will help you regardless. It is categorized perfectly into breakfast, vegetables/sides, poultry etc. the instructions are clear enough that even a novice instant pot use can follow.The best part is the recipes are tried and true if you follow them exactly. So far I’ve made the pumpkin stew cut oats, the chicken noodle soup, the pork loin with apples and they have all been nothing short of spectacular.I hate to admit I’ve purchased several instant pot cookbooks all of which I’ve returned within a week because I was unhappy with the recipes and instructions. This book is different. Not only am I keeping it. But I’ve been telling anyone who owns an instant pot to get one.
Just got this book and loving it already. There’s a huge variety of recipes. It’s lole a one stop shop for recipes. You want to Cooke something in the Instant Pot? You’ll find a recipe on here that you’ll love. Really like how the recipes include the amount of time for the Instant Pot to come up to pressure. Can’t wait to try more of the recipes. If you’re new to the Instant Pot or you’ve had one for a while, this is THE book to get!
I just received my copy of Coco Morante’s gorgeous book, The Ultimate Instant Pot Cookbook, and combed through it page by succulent page, tasting each recipe in my mind as I went. I am already obsessed with this book! I honest-to-God salivated over every recipe... even the vegetarian/vegan chapter, because they are all just scrummy masterpieces. Trust me when I tell you I have just about every Pressure Cooker cookbook on the market that had reasonable reviews. There are a few duds in my collection, but THIS ONE is going to be well loved and well used. The recipes are nicely organized and laid out, with clear concise instructions. And the book itself is substantial and quality made with thick pages and abundant, glossy, to-die-for photographs. Honestly, it’s the Holy Grail of pressure cooker cookbooks. I love it so much, I went immediately to Amazon and downloaded the Kindle format version too. I am recommending this book to all my friends. If you only splurge on one Instant Pot cookbook, this is the one you want in your collection. Kudos, Coco, for a truly special achievement.
Purchased this cookbook for my daughter to use with her new Instant Pot. Lots of good beginner info, which my daughter is. And some really good recipes with exact directions. It’s a hardcover and has nice pages and photos.

I highly recommend this book not only for gymnasts but also for parents especially Moms because this book tells all the feelings these girls have while they are in the gym 20 to 24 hours a week (maybe more) if you are in higher level. Since April Adams was a gymnast she really knew the ins and outs of what is happening inside the gym. The sadness and happiness of each gymnast is shown in this book. Five star for me!

After seeing Commander Karter in several books and watching him interact with Dara (Chloe, Seth, and Dorian's daughter), we have begged Grace for him to get a mate and she answered us with this great story.(To understand my review, I just want to put it out there, I read for story and could care less about the sexy times)This story drops us right into the middle of the Hive war, as mentioned in the previous books, the Battlegroup Karter is actively holding back the Hive in sector 437. Karter was tested years and years ago and has been too busy to have any thoughts of a bride. Ronan is also a Commander and is just as intense as Karter due to the heavy weight of responsibility demanded by their positions. Erica has always loved the stars and jumped at her chance to be among them, especially after her testing as part of a Prillon sandwich (her words, not mine).This story is told from all three POV and we get to see just how tortured Karter is and how much weight is on his very broad shoulders. I really loved Karter and Ronan and even though Erica is just a feisty as the other Interstellar Brides, I guess I just wasn't as impressed with her as I was with the other brides - she does love both of them and fights for a true mating but that's about it. BUT, Karter and Ronan make up for any deficiencies I felt Erica had. The new development in the war is a major game changer and the Coalition is going to have their hands full dealing with it.I love this series and while I have received advanced copies of these books (yes, I joined Grace's review team to get my hands on these books as soon as possible), I have purchased every single one. Purchasing these books and writing reviews so that others have a chance to discover this talented author's work is my way of supporting her and my habit :)EDIT: sign up for the author's newsletter - you'll be glad you did :)

Yeah, I think it's safe to say I'm a fan, and I've never regretted a single purchase! But I digress, so let's talk about this book. Fans have been clamoring for Commander Karter's story and one thing I can say about Goodwin, she listens to her readers. This was probably one of the most highly anticipated books of the series and Goodwin delivered in spades. There were so many things I enjoyed about The Commanders' Mate. It's fast-paced, easy to follow, and well written, as always, with snappy dialogue, an intriguing storyarc, and a large cast of engaging characters. But before I continue, I'd like to say - WOOHOO! WE FINALLY FIND OUT COMMANDER KARTER'S FULL NAME! It's Makaed Karter, aka Kaed! Hey, what can I say? I've been smitten with the enigmatic Prillon warrior battleship commander since he was first introduced at the beginning of the series and like my fellow fans, I've begged shamelessly for his story. I knew it would take a very special woman to lasso this space cowboy! But Erica Roberts from Earth was so much more than just special, she was intelligent, feisty, courageous, and determined, with a capital D. She was also extremely tenacious, like a dog with a bone, and refused to allow anything to stop her from getting her man, or I should say men since Prillon warriors always mate in pairs. And she was an astrologer! How cool is that?!? Pretty darn cool, I'd say, especially since her background and knowledge in Astrology not only helped save the day but also was instrumental in saving every single person on Battleship Karter! As I said, Prillon warriors mate in pairs, two males for each female, a primary and a secondary, but I had no idea who Karter would choose as his second. I knew he'd have to be exceptional and Prillon Warrior and Coalition Intelligence Core Commander Ronan Wothar was definitely one hunk of hot alpha love! WARNING, WARNING, WILL ROBINSON! Sexy times ahead! lol... Ronan had been Karter's life-long best friend and chosen second, that is until 5 years ago when he was reported killed in action. Thankfully, Ronan wasn't dead; he had been working with the Coalition's super-secret spy organization dubbed the Intelligence Core. If you've read Fighting for Their Mate, you may recall it featured human female warrior Commander Chloe Phan, who at one time was also an agent for the Intelligence Core. These guys don't play around. They're a nasty bunch of spies. But Ronan was tired of his isolated existence with the I.C. and truly grateful for the chance at having a mate. But poor Kaed... when it rains, it pours for this battle-hardened commander. In one fell swoop, he simultaneously discovers his long-thought-to-be-dead friend is actually alive, AND he finally has a mate, and not just any mate but a 99% compatibility match! Oh my! Kaed had given up on ever being matched by the Interstellar Brides Program and resigned himself to being alone. Actually, he preferred it that way. His life was dangerous and full of responsibility. He was dedicated to his fleet and it was his job to ensure the safety of the thousands of warriors and families under his command. He had no time for a relationship or a mate. But the heart wants what the heart wants, despite trying to convince himself otherwise. Kaed was determined to send Erica away and never allow her to wear his mating collar. Yeah, good luck with that, Kaed. Remember when I said Erica was feisty and determined? Well, she had other ideas and to heck with the merciless Hive enemies. Erica was hellbent on having her happy ending, with both Kaed and Ronan. And when Erica makes up her mind, there's no changing it. It was a battle of wills, but we all know women are actually the stronger sex, right? When a woman sets her sights on something, nothing will stand in her way. Kaed and Ronan had no idea just what a fierce human female was capable of doing, especially in the name of love! Ronan capitulated fairly quickly, but Kaed was so much slower to acquiesce. I wanted to smack him upside his handsome head - several times! But it was so much fun watching the three of them dance around each other, all the while trying to save the ship, save the day, and outmaneuver the Hive. Sigh... So romantic!So, did I like this book? Yes, very much! Would I recommend it? You bet, and I am but only for adults. If you enjoy fast-paced, well-written science fiction brimming with action, adventure, danger, drama, engaging storyarcs, nail-biting conflicts, endearing characters, sexy heroes, sassy heroines, steamy passion, erotic sex scenes, and heartwarming romance, then this entire series is screaming your name. Will I read this author again? Abso-freakin-lutely! Just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! I was glued to my seat, gasping for breath with a death grip on my ereader as the pages flew as quickly as the time! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read! Well done, Grace Goodwin! Well done, indeed. And FYI, we, your fans, are still waiting for Warden Egara's story and not so patiently, I might add! lol...
At last, the infamous Commander Karter meets his match, and she is up to the challenge! Or should that be, HE is up to the challenge? I have been waiting for Commander Matter to get his HEA ever since Chloe and Seth Miller's book. You gotta love a big tough guy that turns into a marshmallow around little ones. Erica arrives to meet her mates in the midst of chaos, the aftermath of a devastating Hive attack, and badass Earther that she is, she dives right in to help. I love a strong female heroin! Erica is a nice change, because she is not military, nor anything that you would expect to be so tough, she's an astronomer of all things. I really liked Ronan, the I.C. commander , who is Karter's best friend and Second. And we get to catch up with all kinds of old friends in this book as well. There is a really sweet scene with Seth, which I was excited about because he is one of my all time favorite characters. I really like that this series has portrayed Earthers as tough, valuable fighters in the war against the Hive, especially since they are so much smaller than the other races. And also to see the alien races who shelter their own females so much come to accept and respect women in the rolls of soldiers and military leadership, as well as covert operations. But to get back on track as far as this particular book goes, I definitely recommend it! I think this might end up being one of my favorites of this series.
This book is full of emotion, an intense battle, plenty of steam, a strong willed woman who won't settle for anything less than she deserves and the connection that the Prillon mates all have with each other. This book will make you smile and laugh, put you on edge, perhaps shed a tear or two and leave you feeling good. I went through the entire gamut of emotions and LOVED the story. When you finish the book, you HAVE to go to Grace Goodwin's home page and read the bonus epilogue. It is priceless.
