The book admittedly starts slow, and getting used to the invented language seems absurd when you first start. Mr. Stephenson takes a few hundred pages to set up his protagonist and core group of characters, building their world that is in seclusion from the rest of the world they live in. This is the part that a lot of the low reviews seem to give up.Once you hit the point the seclusion breaks down and the protagonist is headed out into the world, though, it kicks into the kind of speed that Neal Stephenson is known for. The rest of the book blazes past as the young Raz is put through trial after trial. The final two chapters I simply couldn't put the book down. it was that kind of entertaining. You forget all about the language replacements and the place the story started.Readers should be cautioned that at many, many points characters break into Socratic dialogues on various subjects. Many of these topics return later to be re-dialogued with new information, or the subject matter actually plays out in the story. if you don't like reading about people talking at length about complex ideas, you may not like portions of this novel. If you are annoyed that this novel's invented language seems like a copy paste replacement of key words instead of a genuine language, well I think that's a valid critique but I wasn't as bothered by it.However if you are intrigued by the theories behind multiple universes, convergent universes, spaceflight, logic puzzles you will find all of them represented well in this novel. If you just want a neat science fiction novel with a grand adventure across continents and elsewhere, this could be your book.Like many of the 1 star reviews I didn't give this book the chance it deserved the first time I tried to read it. My second attempt though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Give it a go, maybe you'll love it too.

For a retired mathematics and computer science professor this book was a perfect fit. I seek out references to mathematics in sci-fi, but this time I was immersed in a tale whose heroes and heroines were the experts on directed acyclic graphs, the Pythagorean Theorem, a pictorial proof of which actually appears in the book, symmetry groups and all things mathematical. As the story progresses, the references to computer science and quantum theory made it even better. Although these facts are woven into the story, it is apparent that Stephenson is not just fudging it, he knows his science well. The world he creates is an extremely interesting place to be during the telling of this tale. The only problem is that the details of monastic life, of cosmology, of mathematics, of logic, of philosophy, of physics, of space mechanics, all seemed somehow to have their own separate rooms in his world.

This book blew my mind.Filled with mind bending philosophical questions, discussions and debates. Built in a fantastically complex yet very cohesive and coherent universe. I loved the characters, the storytelling... I loved everything about this book. It instantly became one of my favourite books ever.The story is slow and this is nowhere near what I would call "action packed"... but it made me think and reflect like very few books have.I loved this book and I wish I could be more eloquent in describing it. But I will definitely be reading it again.

Neal Stephenson always creates a really unique story line with well-drawn characters and this effort is no different. I enjoyed the read with two minor caveats. First, the story is set in a unique world (seems Medieval at first, but that’s not really right) and the author uses new words for objects or ideas that sometimes get defined in the text and other times not. It took me about 100 pages (10% of the book) before I became comfortable with the new terms and started enjoying the story. If I had judged it at the end of the Kindle Sample I never would have finished it. Second, there is a section near the middle of the book (maybe 20-30 pages) where the story action stops and it gets a bit bogged down in philosophical musings. Plow through – the story starts up again in a really novel direction. The last half is hard to put down.

A number of friends who shared my enjoyment of Snowcrash and The Diamond Age warned me away from this one because it was "really different". It is, but it's certainly the same voice. I finally had enough time to catch up on my "to read" stack and this one was close enough to the top that I got to it. By a quarter of the way into the book I was completely hooked and now I'm having trouble putting it down. It starts more slowly than Snowcrash and The Diamond Age, and yes, it assumes you're reasonably conversant in high school math and physics and that you've got some understanding of how Catholic convents and monasteries work. With those basics, Stevenson spins out a captivating tale about what is, what might be, and how we know. I'm 75% of the way through and I've got some hunches about where it's going. I'm excited to find out how close I've come.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It starts off a little slow, but you have to be able to appreciate that it's a slow build to a fascinating and thought-provoking story set in a universe that Stephenson clearly put a tremendous amount of time and research into constructing. While this book doesn't rival some of Stephenson's other more well-known titles like Snow Crash in terms of pace and action, it's nonetheless a completely engrossing read. I've probably read this book cover-to-cover no fewer than five times, and still every time I open it something else "clicks" that didn't before, and as I come to understand more of the "theorics" studied by the protagonists in the book, I come to appreciate more and more just how complex the setting and story are. The size and subject matter might seem a little intimidating to casual readers at first, but I definitely recommend just committing and seeing where you go - the ride is a lot of fun.

I've been studying GIS for a few months now on my own, and have often been stuck as to the meaning of a word.For me this is a very good little book, but it did not even mention some of the projections that are popular inmy country, like the Lambert projections. I am not going to give this book a low mark just for that, because I did pick upa lot of useful information in a very efficient way.If you want to go about it the long way get the Geographic Information Systems and Science but you might fall asleep in the process (it's a good book though!!).The explanations of general computer science concepts like object oriented programming are very introductory, and I would go to the Wikipedia for more detail after if I didnt know the meanings.So I'll probably give it 5 stars when a second edition comes out.Still, for the money it's a definite winner, and it's very enjoyable read.

I bought this book thinking I might teach high school GIS, but didn't. However after it arrived and I looked through it, I wondered why the college courses did not recommend this simple, easy to use, understandable, nice-looking, perfectly-sized, strongly-bound, handy reference. Any introduction to a new discipline with all its unique non-standard terms must start with definitions and this book is a great place to help with that.

I started taking a GIS course online and having a book of terminology has been helpful. I anticipate this book will be a great resource going forward.

The author is such a great writer that she brought me to tears of joy in the first eight pages of the book as she speaks of her endeavor to row a boat down the Nile between Aswan and Qena a distance of 120 miles. Cultures meet and blend with the ebb and flow of the river Nile unchanged in some places by the passage of time. The author seeks freedom in a land that yearns for freedom as she maneuvers between two cultures and the danger of being alone.

I loved this book. Rosemary Mahoney has an amazing ear and ability to reproduce voices--the characters she meets leap off the page.There are many keenly interesting aspects to this book: the physical feat and determination it took, the lives of people of the Nile of southern Egypt and how they see the droves of tourists, the historical reactions of Flaubert and Florence Nightingale to their days on the Nile, and the wonderful ending that clicks the whole story into place.Every single one of the many friends to whomI have referred this book enjoyed tremendously.

Why anyone one would consider doing this regardless of sex is strange-- but for a woman to do this is beyond "strange" considering the culture she faced. She has a good eye for seeing and sensing things and her word pictures are quite illuminating. Even after reading the book, which I did find interesting especially pertaining to the Egyptian culture, I still came away with the "why" question. Her story could have been over almost before it started. She was gutsy and smart but also very lucky.

This is a cute little true adventure book about a lone American woman who is a rowling enthusiast, wants to row down the Nile River from its source to the mouth. She meets resistance everywhere she turns, so there are many good stories of how she is able to navigate, not only the river, but the roadblocks thrown up by officials, tribal ppls, sleazy men, and others, before she is able to embark on her solo trip. Quite interesting read! I was scared for her!

An appreciative, funny and wry look at a different culture. The author is definitely a stranger in a strange land as she negotiates the cultural complexities confronting a single American woman afoot in Egypt, having the singular goal of buying a rowboat and rowing the Nile. Her nights alone on the river are chronicled in a clever, funny, self-mocking narrative of her paranoid flights of fear and angst, incorporating every scary, hair-raising anecdote she had ever heard/read/imagined about crocodiles, snakes, scorpions and Egyptian men. But she perseveres through the unnerving nights, and with the light of day, finds that she has reached her goal.

This book is a rather strange take on the usual "My Trip to Egypt" memoirs written by other intrepid adventurers to the area. Most of the book is spent with the author obsessively searching for a boat in which she can row herself down the Nile - alone. The quest to obtain such a boat brings her in contact with a bevy of wild and wonderful characters - none of them keen to see the author realize her ambition.I thoroughly enjoyed Mahoney's description of the Egyptian people - their confusion as to why on earth a woman alone would want to row down the Nile, and their often bumbling efforts to allow them to do the rowing for her. And along with the historical points of interest, Mahoney unearths all sorts of weird and wonderful facts that won't fail to surprise and titillate the reader.But then we come to Madeleine Stein. Here is a woman who lives and works in Egypt, speaks fluent Arabic, is obviously somewhat of an adventurer, and she agrees to accompany the author down the Nile in order to satisfy the legal requirements of the inspectors. Indeed, the book is dedicated to her. A fascinating woman by anyone's account, but what does she look like? How old is she? Who does she live with? What does she think about things? Whereas Mahoney has intricately described every other character in the book, including herself from a self snapped photo, there is absolutely no quality information on Madelaine Stein other than the bare facts of her presence. This omission was almost irritating enough to deduct a star from my review.Other than this, an enjoyable read and highly recommended.

I found this book extremely helpful in understanding how the brain works, how it processes anxiety and how it creates thoughts. It's written in a clear, simple manner that is very understandable. If you want to understand your brain in a clear, simple way - this book is very good. The book doesn't give a ton of info on HOW to actually do the work involved - but it's very good for background info and an explanation of the brain. I discovered lots of info about the 'technical' side of anxiety that I never knew before.

Though somewhat repetitive, this book is easy to read and clearly explains the basic neurobiology of fear, worry, anxiety, panic, and related conditions such as PTSD and OCD. Drawing on research by Joseph Ledoux and others, the book highlights the central role of the amygdala (the brain's primitive and subconscious 'fear center'), which receives surprisingly scant attention in many other books on this topic. In my opinion, understanding the underlying biology is very helpful, if not essential.The book also provides helpful evidence-based guidance on techniques to prevent or reduce the intensity of anxiety and related conditions. The key techniques are:- Get good sleep, aerobically exercise daily, and eat a healthy diet.- Breathe from the diaphragm/belly, which apparently activates the parasympathetic nervous system and thus counters activation of the sympathetic nervous system resulting from fear.- Remind yourself that thoughts and images are not reality and may be mistaken.- Disrupt problematic thoughts and images via distractions, play, music, and positive thoughts and images.- Mindfully 'defuse' from problematic thoughts, images, and sensations, and instead just 'be' in the present moment, calmly observing all that is happening without any need to interpret or respond in any way.- Meditate, including mindful meditation.- Deliberately and repeatedly expose yourself to the situations which generate unwarranted fear, in order to rewire the amygdala to no longer subconsciously associate those situations with fear. This can be an uncomfortable experience, but accept the discomfort and know that it will pass, and absolutely do not flee from the situations, because doing so will strengthen the fear.I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with excessive worry, fear, anxiety, and related conditions.

I work in an environment of extremely high stress environment where small mistakes really aren't an option.. unfortunately! Additionally, I majored in I/O psychology in college.. so I wasn't convinced any answered could be found in a book.. I was actually considering therapy. I can tell you, this book changed my life.. Please keep in mind that I have a background in biopsychology, but the way this book attacks the physiological then the psychological effects of stress.. really made me re-evaluate how stress was entering my life and my outlook on everything that was a stressor for me. It really helped that my wife also read the book and helps me work through things as I start to feel those physiological effects of stress.. but my life has done a complete 180 from where I was. I still have to work through stress and anxiety... but this really gave me tools to see where I was going wrong.

If you are looking for a book that is just going to provide strategies for how to overcome anxiety, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you are interested in both the neuroscience behind stress and anxiety and learning techniques to cope with those responses, then this is an excellent volume to read. Personally, I agree with the authors that it is often easier to overcome stress when you actually know and understand what is happening to your brain, and how it can manifest itself in physical ways. And while this book is very detailed, I think the authors did a good job of keeping everything easy to understand.Numerous types of stress are discussed in this book, including the reasons that these types of stress occur and what parts of the brain are responsible for your response. If you’re anything like me, you are constantly trying to make logical sense out of your worry, but I learned from this book that there may not always be a logical reason behind your anxiety. In fact, you may not ever really know why you certain situations, thoughts, sounds, smells, etc., can trigger an episode of panic. The good news is that you don’t have to know. The authors go into great detail to describe techniques that you can use to essentially “rewire” your brain to avoid having stress responses. The book mainly discusses the two different parts of the brain that deal with fear and stress, the amygdala and the cortex. The amygdala is basically your body’s natural fear response system. Your amygdala often works without your ever knowing it, such as when you are driving and instinctively swerve out of the way to avoid hitting another car. The cortex, on the other hand, deals with worry and obsessive thoughts. For example, your cortex is to blame when you are constantly worrying about a possible outcome that will likely not occur. You may have one or both of these types of stress, and the authors provide useful “exercises” that can be used to deal with both of these types of stress.If you’re reading this review, I’m guessing that you probably don’t care about all of these details though, right? What you really want to know is if the methods in this book really work. I think they could certainly help many individuals who suffer from stress and anxiety. These authors give insightful strategies to help with different types of stress responses, all of which are based on years of research. Your stress isn’t going to go away overnight having read this book, but it certainly may help you learn to cope with your anxiety when it does occur.Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book through Netgalley.

About the Author

Julie Doucet was born near Montreal in 1965 and is best known for her frank, funny, and sometimes shocking comic book series Dirty Plotte, which changed the landscape of alternative cartooning. In the 1990s, Doucet moved between New York, Seattle, Berlin, and Montreal, publishing the graphic novels My New York Diary, Lift Your Leg, My Fish is Dead!, My Most Secret Desire, and The Madame Paul Affair. In 2000, she quit comics to concentrate on other art forms. From these experiments emerged the collection of engravings and prints Long Time Relationship; her one-year visual journal, 365 Days; and sassy collages from fumetto comics, Carpet Sweeper Tales. Her post-comics artwork includes silkscreened artist's books, text-based collages, sculpture, and animation films.

Julie Doucet is one of the greatest comic book creators of all time, and I've spent a lot of time trying to hunt down her rarer material. But now it's finally here in two big books and one mini-comic. This also just happens to be one of the best collected editions I've ever bought. Everything is presented with the sort of art and attention to detail one normally expects from Doucet and it's just a joy to read. I especially like how each issue of the original Dirty Plottes are printed as they were in the flimsy comics, including the color front and back covers. This is the sort of book you can get lost in.

I had a few of the Dirty Plotte comic books some 20 odd years ago and loved her unique style. This boxed set is a beautiful collection of the Dirty Plotte comic books. Two hardback books in a cardboard case and there is also a small mini comic reprint included that's 100% Julie Doucet! Her artwork style is very creative and she tackles everyday life in a funny manner. Due to the subject matter involved - this set is NOT for children.

I was glad when Julie showed up as a fully formed cartoonist. Her predecessor, Dan, had no legs. We had to carry him everywhere.

I'd long ago bought four of Julie Doucet's books, but these beautiful volumes contain all of those and even more. The colors are really good, too.

Enjoyed this book, but don’t normally read novellas, which at 176 pages, I believe this to be. But since I had read all the others in the series I wanted to read this one as well. Didn’t care for Grace’s father but his being a jerk is explained. The one thing that bugs me about this book was the grammatical and spelling errors. For goodness sake, the book was only 176 pages, couldn’t someone have read the darned thing? Errors were blatant. Did the author hurry to release the book, or is this just lazy editing?

Alan and Grace's story was an awesome addition to the series. Grace was left standing alone at the altar by who she thought was her soul mate from elementary school. Totally embarrassed she took the honeymoon alone to the gulf coast. Alan an ex-military special op transplanted to the area from Alabama for his own reasons meet one night at the bar where he's the bartender.Grace's controlling parents decide to visit after they hear about a night of partying and ruin everything. They seem determined to never let Grace grow up and live on her own.Another awesome story from Jill Sanders with all the twists and turns, and drama you could want. Ms. Sanders always manages to insert a situation that you'd never expected. A delightful love story and, in a way, a coming of age story. I loved this book. It grabbed me from the beginning and I read it in one long, cold, rainy afternoon

Each story hps reinforce the hold wealthy parents have over their children. In this case Alan, a retired former Marine moves to Florida and becomes a bartender and good friend to Wendy who marries one of the 3 Grayton brothets. A popular bartender, Alan finds love when he meets a lovely bride who was left at the altar by her childhood sweetheart. Layer disowned by her wealthy parents because she returned home from her honeymoon trip pregnant with Alans' baby who only lives a short time and leaves her on her own disinherinherited by her parents , a long way from the love of her life and without her baby boy, conceived in love. A great sad but uplifting story that shows the power of true love and being able to stand up for yourself against all odds.

It broke my heart ❤️ about the baby, since I’m a sucker for babies, but the over all love won out. I loved the fact that people who weren’t blood by nature became family and better than blood. I wanted to knock that thing that substituted as a mother out. And we won’t even mention the supposed dad. But the ending was sweet. Again a good short story.

In this book Grace is stood up at the alter on her wedding day. She decides since her honeymoon is nonrefundable she would go alone. There are many interesting twists and turns to the plot which lead to a happy ending.

Very easy read. I’m a sucker for a good series. I love following the family dynamic in each story. Jill sanders knows exactly how to Mach me start the next book when finished.

Omg!! I loved this story!!! I had missed hearing about the grayton family!! Hopefully they will write another story to follow up this one!! Gotta know what their married lives will be like.
