Each is incredibly approachable and mouthwatering. This little book has quickly become my go-to for healthy but tasty meals!A few of my favorites: avo-chocolate mousse and the avo-mango smoothie (pictured below). Both felt indulgently sweet without making me feel blah afterwards. Next up on my list: roasted roots farro bowl and avo-falafel burger. The beautiful photographs throughout have motivated me to get in the kitchen. I can’t wait to gift this gem to my friends!

I like this book for my toddler who is obsessed with the moon. I read this book aloud to my daughter while my husband was in the room. I thought it was great until the very last page. I can't remember the exact words, but it talks about the moon being dead. I wish it ended on a positive note. My husband and I both had the same reaction to the last page.

Writing a GOOD nonfiction book for children is a daunting mission, but Seymour Simon has conquered the task! 'The Moon' is clearly written, and gives and amazing amount of information in an easy to understand sort of way. The text is white on a black backround and causes the reader to focus on the pictures while reading the book. I am so impressed with the clear delivery of information blended with the incredible pictures that I am going to purchase more of Seymour Simon's work.

Stanford professor of psychology, Carol Dweck has a view of human development that may well lead to behaviour change and a career boost.Dweck’s insight has its origin in a curious behaviour she noticed in children. When given puzzles, some chose easy ones, which ensured they succeeded. Others chose to do difficult ones, which meant they had a good chance of failing. “Not only weren’t they discouraged by failure, they didn’t even think they were failing. They thought they were learning.”From this she concluded that people possess two fundamental mindsets – a “fixed” mindset and a “growth” mindset.The fixed mindset believes that one’s abilities are a fact of birth and are unchangeable. Just as you are born with a certain eye-colour, so you are born with a certain brain strength. Your IQ is fixed and can be seen from your grade one IQ score. From then on, you are locked into an ability set. There are some who through sheer hard work can overcome their minimal ability, while others achieve as much with no effort. Having to work hard to achieve is a sign of limited ability.Not only is this understanding incorrect, Prof Dweck explains, but the consequences of this fixed view of ability is the root cause of many problems in learning, relationships and career.Alfred Binet designed his IQ test in the early 20th century. His purpose was to identify children who were not profiting from the Paris public schools, so that new educational programmes could be developed to assist them. Far from believing one’s IQ was fixed, he believed that education and practice could make profound changes to intelligence. His view that intelligence can be grown has been bolstered by the work of neuroscientists such as Gilbert Gottlieb, who has shown that not only “do genes and environment cooperate as we develop, but genes require input from the environment to work properly.”Robert Sternberg, the present-day guru of intelligence, holds that the primary factor in whether people achieve expertise “is not some fixed prior ability, but purposeful engagement.” In fact, scientists are learning that people have more capacity for lifelong learning and brain development than was ever thought.What does all this imply?Believing that your qualities are carved in stone - Dweck’s “fixed” mindset - leaves people with the all-consuming goal of proving themselves in the classroom, and in their careers. If Rome wasn’t built in a day, maybe it wasn’t meant to be.What are the career implications of this fixed and growth mindset?In the brain-wave lab at Columbia, students with a fixed mindset paid close attention only to whether their answers were right or wrong. When they were presented with information that could help them learn, there was no sign of interest as indicated from brain-wave activity. When they were shown that their answers were wrong, they were not interested in learning what the right answer was.In the world of work the fixed mindset “intelligent” to spend most of their efforts showing they are special and entitled. Having to make an effort and learn is for those who are “less intelligent.”This leads to the what Dweck calls the “CEO disease.” Rather than confronting their shortcomings these CEOs create a world where they have none. They surround themselves with worshippers, and exile critics. Some choose short-term strategies that boost the company’s fortunes, and make themselves look like heroes, rather than working for long-term improvement and risking disapproval, as they lay the foundation for the health and growth of the company in the future.Lou Gerstner, a growth mindsetter, was brought in to turn IBM around. As he worked on the enormous task of overhauling IBM, its share price was stagnant and Wall Street disappointed. Gerstner was called a failure. A few years later, however, IBM was leading its industry again.Darwin Smith, reflecting on his extraordinary performance at Kimberly-Clark, said that he had “never stopped trying to be qualified for the job.”When NASA solicits applications for astronauts, they reject people with unblemished records of success, and instead select people who have had significant failures, and bounced back.Jack Welch, the celebrated CEO of General Electric, chose executives on the basis of “runway,” their capacity for growth.If you are ‘special’ when you are successful, what are you when you’re unsuccessful? In the fixed mindset, the loss of one’s self-esteem to failure can be a permanent, haunting trauma. Even with a growth mindset, failure is a painful experience, but it does not define the person. It’s a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from.Dweck reports a study of seventh-graders’ responses to academic failure. Those with a growth mindset, (no surprise,) said they would study harder for the next test. Those with the fixed mindset said they would study less for the next test. If you don’t have the ability, why waste your time?A study of university students showed that the more depressed those with a growth mindset felt, the more they took action to confront their problems. They made sure to keep up with their studies, and keep up with their lives. The worse they felt, the more determined they became!People with the growth mindset intuitively believe that even geniuses have to work hard for their achievements. Which is factually true.Mindsets are not a permanent part of one’s personality, but they are an important part and one that can be changed.“Just by knowing about the two mindsets, you can start thinking and reacting in new ways. People tell me they start to catch themselves when they are in the throes of the fixed mindset—passing up a chance for learning, feeling labelled by a failure, or getting discouraged when something requires a lot of effort. I was looking forward to reading this for months, and had a mixed reaction when I finally did. The book is valuable for its conceit: that there are two types of mind-sets; the growth and the fixed. The growth is the one to have if you want to thrive in life, career, relationships, etc. People are formed early on into one mindset or the other, but can change to the valuable growth mindset if they put themselves to the task. This is incredibly important and the book's value stands on this assertion alone. All of this can be summed up in a single chapter, or a scientific paper tweaked for the lay reader. The problem is that this argument is stretched thin to become a "book" and Dweck's writing doesn't maintain enough interest on its own and is often clunky, sentimental and obvious at times. I'm sure this happens a lot when a notable scientist, psychologist, etc is given a book deal and needs to expand it to justify a full-length book when something shorter would suffice to most readers (exceptions are brilliant writers like Daniel Kahneman and Daniel Gilbert, etc). So Mindset is a mixed bag. The real gift here is the conceit. Read it because it has value. It's an informational book, but not a great book.

This was the book that completely turned me off from the psychology/self-help genre. It lacked depth and felt like an endless repetition of comparing situations in which one person had the "proper" mindset and another had the "wrong" mindset, followed by a few condescending, didactic paragraphs on why the proper mindset was necessary in leading the former to success; it's apparently the key to everything. Very little was mentioned on *how* to actually achieve this mindset.On the bright side, I've now become more tolerant towards other not-so-great books. It'd be pretty hard to get any worse than this one.

I first came across the author in a TED video. Her talk about how "not yet" generates far more power than "fail" was interesting and I decided to buy her book to further read into her studies. The book in general is an interesting piece of work. I like the way she describes the "growth mindset". However, most of the book seems to focus on discussing the difference between "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" applied to different fields. So it does get very predictable and tedious. There is far not enough discussion about how to better develop the "growth mindset". It is like the author uses the entire book to emphasize how important "growth mindset" is but doesn't really offer much help. In particular, I don't like how she attributes every corporate failure to "fixed mindset". I think it is way too generalizing and over-simplifying.

This book could have easily been summed up in an article but instead it's a 240+ page book repeating essentially the same thing over and over and over. The book is about how your mindset, fixed or open, to challenges, beliefs, and overall life can have a great impact on how you adjust and what you become. As an example, if two children get an F on an assignment with different mindsets, the fixed will tend to think they're dumb and lose interest while the open will know they can learn and view it as a challenge.That's it. I'm not being overly critical of the book or idea. That is the book stretched out using examples from sports, business, relationships, and pretty much areas where your mindset can help determine where you proceed when faced with a challenge.I don't know how someone could give this five stars. I don't mean that to be rude but you're more or less reading the same idea on every page.

My Thoughts:This was a very quick, easy read. I finished it in just a few hours. I definitely have mixed feelings about it. The writing style and portrayal of the main character's thoughts and feelings seemed a bit disjointed or choppy or awkward. I'm not sure if this was intended or not. I could definitely relate to some of Egg's conflicting feelings of wanting to be invisible vs wanting to be noticed. And about feeling boy proof (though unlike her, I don't intentionally try to make this happen) And I do enjoy characters who are quirky or eccentric; those characters who are off-the-beaten-path so to speak. I wish there was a creature shop I could hang out at with my dad. AWESOME. With that being said, Egg's arrogance became a major turn-off as did her rudeness towards others. After a while the references to Terminal Earth get a bit redundant. You do see a transition or growth in Egg's character from start to end which is important, and the interactions between Egg and the boy interest Max are enjoyable. I found Max in general to be quite enjoyable.Favorite quotes: "There is no easy way from the earth to the stars." "I haunt the hallways like a broken spirit."Bottom Line: Not great, not terrible. Worth reading for only $1.99. 3/5 "stars"

I really enjoyed this book a lot. Good character development throughout the book. Although the story was simple and a bit predictable, it was perfect for a YA reader. I enjoy books that allow me to peer into the psyche of an outsider and know what they might be thinking. I enjoyed being transported into this girl's world and see things from her perspective. I felt for her, and that's important to me in a novel. Great read!

I just finished Boy Proof. It was such fun to read and I have to say I was impressed at the ending. I found myself thinking a lot about someone I knew in high school at the beginning of the story, and then more and more about myself and about high school in general and how people try or refuse to try to fit in. I also liked that Victoria, too, needed to find herself. I liked that her parents were nice people, neither of them villains. It seems like that happens a lot in fiction these days. And Max's comment about finding it easy to make friends, but not necessarily keep them was very intriguing. He was such a great character! So alive that I can't forget about him even now that the book is closed.

this Book I got for my Daughter for school she needs to do an essay and I could not find this book in the Library, so far she likes it.

This book was an incredibly fast read. While the reading level was a little low for an adult like my self, it would be very well suited for young teens. The story, which could have been predictable, provided a nice twist on a teenage romance. It chose to concentrate on Egg, the narrator, and her path to finding a version of herself she was happy with, and the positive effect it has on her life and the lives of her loved ones. The story line took paths I did not expect it to, and is a positive coming of age tale. While the reading level or storyline may have been a bit young for me, I do recommend it as a short YA novel.

Great story, seamlessly told. All the relationships were dead-on, especially the protagonist's relationship with her mother. The author pulled off the tricky feat of having the protagonist act in self-destructive and frustrating ways (out of insecurity, fear, shame etc.) and yet rather than get annoyed with her, the reader sympathizes with and hopes for her. It's a subtle technique and absolutely integral to the success of the narrative. An honest, moving, and memorable tale of adolescence.

I devoured this fantastic book in a day and I feel like I want to read it five more times. It came highly recommended by John Green and I was not disappointed. The imagery was inspiring and I also recommend this fabulous book.

Wow! Wow! Wow! I would give this book 10 stars if I could. The writing is divine, the plot amazing and the characters so real I think I know them personally. And maybe I do. This is the story of the same kind of neighborhood I lived in from age two to nine from 1956 to 1963.It's 1959. The houses on Hemlock Drive are identical. The men take great pride in their lawns. The kids play outside until the moms call them in for dinner. All the moms stay home and bake cookies for their kids. It's a safe and magical time. Or is it? Author Alice Hoffman creates this neighborhood and populates it with ordinary people living what we sometimes look back on as the perfect time.And then the nearly unthinkable happens. A divorced mother (in 1959!!!) moves into the neighborhood. Suddenly we get a better peek inside those identical homes on Hemlock Drive and realize there are a myriad of different problems behind closed doors. And mysteries. And yearnings. And jealousies. Broken marriages. Broken psyches. Teenage sex (in 1959!!!). Wife beating. A teenage car theft ring. A runaway mother. Marijuana-smoking teens (in 1959!!!) And a clairvoyant kid. It's a very light touch of the supernatural that brings the book to life and the plot to fruition.Best of all, you don't have to be of a certain age (translation: baby boomer) to fall in love with this book. It's irresistible!This is why we read--because of books like this.

I had heard great things about this book and this author. It started strong then just, sort of fizzled. I kept waiting for something fantastic to happen, but was left disappointed.The people on Hemlock were used to their little lives on their little street. They all portrayed themselves as content and happy, but behind closed doors it seemed that no one was fulfilled. And those who were fulfilled was blinded to the misery their parents and children felt. But, each family lived the lives expected of them. The husbands went to work each day, the children to school, and the wives stayed home to care for their families. Each house looked the same from the outside.However, a newcomer entered their quiet little world and was not like the rest of them. She was divorced with children, she wore different clothing, wore more make up and jewelry, except for the one piece which seemed to define a woman: a wedding band.As the months went by she began to touch more and more lives. She, succeeding as a single mother made other women question their roles as a wife. Her vulnerability made her an object of desire for men on Hemlock. Her unusual habits made her an individual for children yo shy from and spread rumors of being a witch, and thusly, ostracize her oldest son.As her desire to be accepted free, the desire of her neoghbors' lives to change in conjunction.Theo families on Hemlock experienced changes, joys, and tragedies. Life went on, people adapted.......and then it was over. No huge revelation. No big scene of true acceptance or otherwise. It just stopped.The story, all in all, was decent. I had a connection for some characters. I had sympathy for some, but mostly I was indifferent toward them. Perhaps that was the point: just a snapshot of a year in the life of a street that could be anywhere. Just to be introduced and move on.Because the book didn't drag on and on, I gave it a 3 star rating; it was a fast read. Had there been more drama, a twist of some sort - something! - which would have been entertaining, I would have given it 4. So, if you're in the mood for a shallow, quick story without much substance, this is your weekend read. If you're looking for something to take your breath away and keep you turning pages, you'd be better served to look elsewhere.

Given that I was born only a few years before the setting of this novel, I could have written it describing the ubiquitous houses, manicured lawns, and stay-at-home Moms who were a lot like Beaver Cleaver's Mom (sans the pearls). This could be described as a "coming of age book" because of the age of the characters and what they go through on their way to adulthood.I enjoyed the book for a lot of reasons, but mostly because of the nostalgia I felt in reading it. Readers who enjoy evolving characters will enjoy this read as well as those who grew up in this period (late fifties-early sixties). But it's not limited to those people. Those who want a look at that window of time would do well to read the book. Divorce was taboo, or at least not discussed in polite company. It the novel, it's referred to as "the d word" (to show how the word is not even voiced. That was how it was back then.There's mystery here, too, and a bit of magic, but I won't spoil it for you, the reader. Enjoy this well written, though slightly eccentric (in a fun way) book.

In the beginning of the book, I did not expect to enjoy the story as much as I did. It turned into a beautiful snapshot of a year in the life of a group of families in 1959/1960. I loved learning about all of the characters and the pacing of the story overall ended up being perfect. The intertwining of their lives and the effects they all have on one another was so intriguing and the ending left me feeling fulfilled which is all one can ask for these days. My one critique was the random "mystical" elements within the book such as Billy's intuition and the candle melting voodoo doll scene. I felt as they were anachronistic and didn't serve the beauty of the otherwise great story.I I wish we could almost keep learning more about what the future holds for all of the characters but am happy with the snapshot the author provided.
