I have a couple of other Collins maps for Scotland. This one does have more information about Castles than the other Collins maps. However, it you can plan ahead, I recommend getting the Collins Touring Map of Scotland. It has all the castles marked on it, plus a lot of other things worth seeing. If you have time and can use the Touring Map along with doing some Internet research ahead of time, I think you'll get more information from Touring Map. That said, if it's all castles for you, then go with this map. It does have castle details and it folds out smaller than the Touring Map, making it easier to use in the car.
It was a little tough to find specific castles because a.) we had not searched for them before and b.) there are so many castles and other sites in Scotland that specific ones were sometimes difficult to pinpoint within certain coordinates. After we used the map for a while, we began to understand the logic of how it is designed. Best to block out a dedicated hour or so if you are planning on plotting out an extended Castle Tour. Overall, very satisfied with delivery, price, and quality.
Useful guide for out trip to Scotland. Easy to use. Very informative. We were glad to have it along for our trip. It helped with trip planning.
Great review of castles in Scotland. Particularly nice feature is info regarding which castles are open to the public and hours they are open. I plan to use the map extensively for a trip this summer in which my son. grandson, and I will be exploring Scottish castles.
It would take quite a while to visit all of the castles in Scotland, but this map makes the effort a lot easier.
The maps are quite detailed and larger than a regular gas station road map. This allows the map larger font and legend and easier on the eyes. The outer part is thick like coated card stock in order to protect the map from moisture while folded. I would definitely buy this type of map again.
I am overwhelmed by the number of castles listed on this map! I am trying to determine which ones to see - I only have a 2 week vacation!
The map itself seems great, however; the condition it showed up in was not so great. The map was stained and stuck together from getting wet. When I pulled it apart, some sections were not legible. The packaging was not damaged so this happened prior to shipping.

This book has a good balance of foundational information and practical applications of Powershell 2.0. If there was a version of this for Powershell 1.0 I wish I had known about it. :-) The author assumes that you have some background in scripting so it doesn't come across as a pure beginner's book. The book provides practical examples for Powershell in the Windows environment and some background information on each subject. It has an appropriate balance between detail and maintaining a "big picture" view of teaching you about how to use Powershell.The only request I make of the author in a future edition is to provide a little more coverage on loading assemblies through the Reflection.Assembly class. This is a minor issue though because he does discuss when to use it and of course one can always consult the online Microsoft documentation for additional methods.Some of the big pluses in the book include a "real world" view and I particularly liked the quick overview of SQL Server support and how to add the supporting snapins to the basic Powershell environment - that saved me a lot of time!Overall, one of the better books out there on the subject for those interested in a hands-on approach.
The book is more of a reference book of Powershell functions. It seems to be working on the basis you already had training or some experience with Powershell. It down't go through very well what type PCs and servers it works on. I had to go online for some essential system setup procedures. if you're experienced I'd recommend it, otherwise keep shopping around.
I got this book because the XML Pocket Consultant book by the same author was so good. The Powershell book is not so clearly written.If you know Powershell and just need a quick reference focused on Windows admin tasks, then this book might be useful.Otherwise, the Cookbook by Holmes (O'Reilly) explains specific solutions better. The Manning book Powershell in Action is the best written guide to Powershell in general.This book mostly just sits on my bookshelf unused.
This is a great handbook for PowerShell. Great reference with re-usable examples for the Windows System Administrator.
As a newbie to this subject I found this book very worthwhile to have and use while scripting. Organization is good although could be improved in a few places, particularly given how powershell is alot like C#.
I like the presentation and buy it for reference and quick reference manual. The information in the amazon portal helped me decide.
It was useful when I used Windows, but now I use Mac.
This book is a great recourse that brings your coding skills into the C# generation, pulling on .net objects. I'm looking at the PowerCLI books next and will start looking for PowerShell SQL queries as well.

I roadied for the Heartbreakers and for Jerry’s band with Sid Vicious, the Idols. Curt’s book is the most truthful, serious, and well-researched book on both the Dolls / punk era in NYC, the punk milieu of Max’s, CBGB, and the drug and decadence atmosphere that made up our scene. Jerry was uniquely talented, uniquely New York, and uniquely difficult. As the Heartbreakers roadie, I had the opportunity to see both the best and the worst of Jerry and his band mates, and Curt pulls no punches in this chronicle of the wild ride of Nolan and the NY scene. If you’re a Dolls fan, a fan of the NY punk explosion, or just a rock fan that wants an insider’s view of the rock and roll world at this special moment in time, buy this now. Curt was present at the creation, he’s done his homework, he’s an accomplished writer matched with the perfect subject. Highly recommended.
Really terrific. What could easily have become a tabloid-ish, exploitation tale is instead a fascinating and nuanced look at a musician who left his mark with two influential bands, the Dolls and the Heartbreakers, that shaped the Downtown NY scene in the 70s. It provides context, fascinating details and rich insights rarely found in music bios. I thought I knew a fair amount about Jerry Nolan but this book humanized him in ways that consistently surprised me. Musicians will love the author's (a drummer himself) ability to shine a light on some of the technical issues that contributed to Nolan's style and non musicians will appreciate his description of the passion and emotions that drove this complicated drummer. A must read.
Curt Weiss's book is an in-depth picture of Jerry Nolan, the celebrity NY punk drummer, but also a detailed story of the early punk scene. "Stranded In the Jungle" touched on all aspects of punk culture: the music, fashion, writing, and economics of the time and of course, the drug use that tore through the scene. Incredibly well written and engaging, I read it in two days, not wanting to put it down. The detail, bibliography, and number of interviews Mr. Weiss did to research this book are impressive. The chapters on Jerry's early life and his early love of music are fascinating, Curt's description of Nolan's love-hate relationship with guitarist Johnny Thunders was heartbreaking, and the author painted rich pictures of the lovers and friends who supported Nolan throughout his life. Especially interesting are the chapters about the Heartbreakers tours to England, you get the full story of the differences between the American and English punk scene while you are following Jerry, Johnny, Walter and the other NY'ers around. Stranded in the Jungle is not just for old punks who were there or Heartbreakers fans, anyone who is interested in culture, music history, or just wants a well-written, exciting read about about rock and roll will love this book.
Like the author, I knew Jerry Nolan. I had seen the Dolls many times, and knew Jerry and his girlfriend Michelle. In 1975 I photographed Jerry with the original Heartbreakers (with Richard Hell) a few weeks after I bought my first camera in New York. That was the 'Catch Them While They're Still Alive' session, later used on the cover of "Please Kill Me". Then I did the cover to "L.A.M.F." the Heartbreakers only album, that was such an honor! I always found Jerry to be charming and funny, very chivalrous. This book seems to be very well researched, with a lot of time spent looking for little known sources, people who could shed a light on different sides of Jerry. He comes across as a complex and unique character, who lived a full life, unfortunately diminished and then cut short, by drugs. I think it's always disturbing for fans to read books which describe people who are dead in even a partially negative way. Partly because the subject isn't here to explain themselves, but also because we want to remember people a certain way. Ultimately Jerry Nolan will be remembered as a talented drummer whose contributions, both musical and sartorial, will not be forgotten.

Weiss provides a keen, unapologetic, yet loving tribute to a rocker who yearned for but never quite achieved the same superstar-level status as his friends from Kiss, Blondie, or the Sex Pistols. The story of Nolan's life is one we think we know: a high-energy, mega-talented, image-conscious musician who made his mark in the world of music, but never escaped the personal demons that cut his life short. Yet Weiss brings a soulful touch to this narrative that transcends the world of rock--a deep, shared rhythm of humanity that echoes long after the final page.

This book represents the minority view on Who Wrote The Dead Sea Scrolls. In my view, it iswell worth the effort, whether you agree or disagree, to examine another point of view. It's notan easy read, and I haven't yet finished the book, but it has my attention. Lots of notes and referencesfor further study. To answer the question, I don't think we'll ever know WHO wrote the DSS. (That's my opinion.)But it's fun to work on the puzzle.
Golb gives a very cogently argument for his theory that the Dead Sea scrolls come not from Qumran but from libraries in Jerusalem prior to its fall in 70 CE. I don't necessarily believe him but his strongly evidence based approach has definitely left me with a lot to think about.
The decades long narrative about the Dead Sea Scrolls is an illustration of why beginnings are important -- and how in the end academics can act just like everyone else.From the beginning, the scrolls were cast as the products of an Essene community living southeast of Jerusalem. It didn't matter that there was little evidence for such a community -- what mattered was that the "Qumran community" story became the prevailing paradigm for understanding this archeological find. Having established this as a paradigm, facts, discoveries, and findings there around the scrolls were bent to fit the narrative.All knowledge begins with information, and we posit hypotheses that will explain the information. Good science will then modify the hypothesis as further information becomes available. A scientific discovery is almost never complete: we're constantly changing our understanding as findings come into play.The problem is that scientists are men and women like the rest of us. And instead of modifying hypotheses in light of evidence, they sometimes bend evidence to attempt to make it fit the hypothesis.Golb posits that this has happened with the scrolls initially found in a cave in 1947. Father de Veux and others proposed the hypothesis that the scrolls were the products an Essene community (the Essenes having been mentioned by ancient sources). So far, so good. It was probably a good thesis 50 years ago. But now there is evidence -- carefully, almost painfully documented by Golb -- which indicates that the thesis no longer fits the facts. However, some scholars continue to cling to the original thesis, unchanged by the vast array of information found since 1947. In this book, Golb seeks to amass the information which challenges this theory, and propose theories which more easily -- in the words of Owen Barfield -- "saves the appearances."Those who debunk old theories sometimes go too far. Some have done that with the scrolls, positing that instead of being important, they are of little value. Golb seeks a via media, showing how the scrolls found are extremely important to understand the nuances of the first century Judaism and of the nascent Christianity of that time., and of how literature in first century Jerusalem was a multidimensional and interesting body of work.
This 1995 book should have been the stake in the heart of the theory of a so-called 'Qumran community of Essenes who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls'; revealing, as it does, the promoters of that bankrupt theory to be mostly scholarly charlatans -- masquerading behind academic credentials -- of the most religiously bigoted variety. (Roman Catholic? Jewish? Protestant? It makes no difference. The Scrolls' origins, translations, and interpretations seem to be the sole study in which religious bigots of all Judeo-Christian persuasions can strike an ecumenical accord.) As a result of strident proselytizing and unscholarly -- sometimes immoral and illegal -- activities, the 'consensus view' of the 'Qumran-Essene scribes' is unfortunately alive and thriving today in many scholarly circles; which means, perforce, that it is a 'given' in lay circles. Sad. Maybe another half century will see its final demise.I have a single beef with this terrific book, and that is with the somewhat gratuitous pondering, toward the end of the book, about the effects of the Dead Sea Scrolls on the study of early Christianity. In the process of tackling this huge subject in merely a few paragraphs, Golb refuses to distinguish between early Judeo-Christianity and the full-blown, Hellenic/Roman Christianity of Paul and Constantine. In refusing to do so, Golb -- a bit perversely, it seems -- practices very well that same scholarly obtuseness and obfuscation that he has just spent hundreds of pages castigating. He should have foregone the publication of these half-formed musings.Otherwise, I think that everyone who is interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls should read this book; and then that same everyone should not delay in taking advantage of the Internet to send scolding letters to the scoundrels who managed to suppress the publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls for exactly half a century after the discovery of the first seven scrolls. You might want to mention in your letters that these rogues are still, after the publication of the Scrolls, almost managing to suppress any and all discussion of their flawed translations and interpretations of the Qumran fragments. I think that these ladies and gentlemen -- the only honorifics that I will accord them -- should know that we do not like to be told lies.
