Extras is the unexpected final book in the Uglies series, following what was originally touted as a trilogy. The series is set in a dystopian future in which the ideas of beauty and conformity are the central ideals of the society. This book takes place a few years after Tally's story ended and centers on Aya Fuse. While conformity is less of a "thing" than it once was, beauty still remains as a measure of worth. But is apparently no longer enough to be beautiful OR to be unique. In Aya's city, being famous was the primary goal. The more famous you are, the higher your "face rank" is and that rank is the currency upon which her society is based. There are pretty specific cliques within her fame-obsessed world. There are the tech heads, those that are obsessed with the newest technology. There are also the surge monkeys, those who are obsessed with the newest and weirdest plastic surgery trends in their quest for physical attractiveness. And then there are the kickers, those obsessed with tracking down the latest story, the latest gossip, the latest bit of news. These are posted on feeds, techy versions of our blogs. Those whose face ranks are at the low end are the extras, the climbers who are obsessed with raising their ranks. Aya is an extra with a face rank so low that no one knows who she is. And she is obsessed with changing that. When she stumbles upon a mysterious group of girls, it changes everything for her. Most of the book focuses on Aya and her friends and they are all important to the story. But we also see Tally and her crew again, brought into the story at important moments. There are a ton of twists and turns in the plot, and quite a few surprises. In many ways, this is a timely book for this day and age. It confronts the ideas of beauty and fame both, and turns it on edge in an extreme way that makes you think. There are also themes of ethics and morality that present themselves in interesting, even if subtle, ways. There is no question that I loved this series and the thoughts it provoked. But I can't help but wish that perhaps it took all of these themes just a bit further. Like any good dystopian story, the author criticizes current society and focuses on aspects of it that are disturbing in their potential for disaster. He took those things to extreme levels and based the world of his books on those aspects. Beauty, conformity, fame... all of these things have the potential for disaster. And all of these things are questioned. But in the end, Tally still becomes Pretty and Aya still becomes famous. True, as characters they have questioned those things and they are aware of the darker side, but they still became the very things that are at the center of controversy. While both of these girls rebelled against the system, they both benefitted from it and I am not sure that was the intended message. Of course, I do tend to over think things! My Recommendation: This is an well-written series with some important issues as the focus. It is engaging and thought-provoking and a fantastic reading experience.

My favorite thing about dystopian fiction is their ability to give me a different perspective on our world, culture, and society. Dystopian novels push me to really consider the world that we live in and see a little bit of our reality in the dystopian world, to see the potential for what our world could become. Uglies is one of those novels... one that made me really think about some fundamental issues that are present in our own culture.Every dystopian world is a the result of a utopian effort to eliminate those things considered to be detrimental to society. For the world of Uglies, that is nonconformity and extremes. Set about three hundered years in the future, the world is otherworldly high-tech and the government provides everything to its people, even the extreme cosmetic surgery that is a major part of it's culture. At 16, each person receives cosmetic surgery that transforms them from an "ugly" to a "pretty." Prior to surgery, each person can choose what their future self will look like within the governmentally mandated standards of beauty. The lines between ugly and pretty are not just visual, but physical as well. Once transformed, new pretties cross the river to live in beautiful condominiums where, for the time being, their only job is to be beautiful and to have fun. Later, they will have other operations in conjunctiuon with the passage of time. Eventually they will have surgery to turn them into "Middle Pretties," those who are adults with jobs. And later they move on to become "Crumblies," our senior citizens.Tally Youngblood is the protagonist, about to turn 16 and looking forward toi her operation. Her best friend Peris has already had his operation and she is feeling the strain that comes between Pretties and Uglies. Shortly before she has her operation, she meets Shay, another Ugly. They become fast friends, hoverboarding and pulling the pranks that are a part of Ugly tradition. Shay is different from anyone she has ever known, balking against the surgery. Tally ignores that, but is forced to deal with it when Shay runs away just before their shared birthday. When she goes, she leaves Tally a note with cryptic directions that she doesn't initially understand. On the morning of her surgery, Tally is taken instead to Special Circumstances... a paramilitary division of the government that enforces the rules. There she is given an ulitmatum to give up Shay or never get her surgery to become a Pretty. This is the motivation behind the plot of the novel as Tally discovers things about herself, about her friends, about the world, and about her own feelings. This is a character-driven novel with important themes to consider. The concept of identity is a big part of the storyline. The government has created and mandated these surgeries in order to create conformity. Extreme individuality is considered to be a disruptive aspect of past societies, creating a standard of appearance that even removes racial markers. Beauty is dictated by those standards, a nod to the image-obsessed society that we now live in. But beauty almost loses its meaning among the Pretties, when everyone is beautiful. Uglies think of themselves as almost temporary, fUlawed. After all, they will be "fixed" when they turn 16. Even the personalities and personal dynamics change when they move from Ugly to Pretty, underlying the idea that we are defined by our appearance. The characters are well-developed and easily relatable in different ways. Because of the wide range of characters along the Ugly-Pretty spectrum, there were lots of perspectives and thoughts about the world. Some of the characters made you really think about the choices you might make for yiourself if in their position. There are undoubtedly things that are tempting about the Pretty part of society, but at the same time, the implications are frightening. And there are just as many things that are tempting about remaining Ugly (our own reality), as well as the sacrificesMy Recommendation: This is a fantastic example of dystopian literature, a world with both utopian and dystopian elements. The implications of a world like the one in this book are a little scary, particularly when compared to the world and culture we live in today. Fantastic read that will make you think!

As much of a fan I've been of all of Barron's Merlin books, this one wasn't his best. The characters were not nearly as good as his other books and the storyline felt like book two or three, just with a different main character.

I really enjoyed reading the seriesMerlin is one of my favorite subjects as well as dragons so the series puts two them together

I can't even fairly rate this book, because I wouldn't have considered buying it for myself. You know, I may be old-school, but I think a book description is supposed to be, oh, I don't know, a DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK. I don't want a brief synopsis of the accomplishments of the author. I want to know what the BOOK. IS. ABOUT. Of the first six books in the Merlin series, only Books 5 and 6 even bother to summarize the book. Seriously, it doesn't matter how good a book is, if nobody knows what it's about, you aren't going to get a lot of cold sales. Book descriptions sell books, period. Pretty covers don't sell them. Moderately known (not famous, sorry) authors don't sell books. Wanting to read a story sells books. And if the author can't be bothered to write a synopsis of his story, I'll find another book.

This series is an incredible journey... one that speaks to you on a deep level.

Merely a continuation of the previous book. Mostly predictable and obviously leading up to a huge finale. Hopefully the next book will be a bit more exciting. A good read.

Book was in awesome condition. Thank you

I am enjoying all the T A Barron books, I have ordered all 12 of this series. They make fantastic reading

I bought these books for my grandson. He read and enjoyed them.

About the Author

"He was not of an age, but for all time," declared Ben Jonson of his contemporary William Shakespeare (1564–1616). Jonson's praise is especially prescient, since at the turn of the 17th century Shakespeare was but one of many popular London playwrights and none of his dramas were printed in his lifetime. The reason so many of his works survive is because two of his actor friends, with the assistance of Jonson, assembled and published the First Folio edition of 1623.

The Tragedy of King Lear is a gem with keen insights into the ways that people can be superficial at their own peril and the peril of those they love. Unfortunately, I read the Kindle version. As with many Kindle books that involve formatting, the playscript was very difficult to follow due to erroneous breaks in the lines of text. Read King Lear as a physical book.

This 'interpretation' alongside the original makes for much easier reading, while making the original so readily available also gives one the 'texture' of how the original felt. There is so much meaning and so much feeling contained in this play that the interpretation is essential unless one is able to interpret all the old English terms by oneself. So, I will certainly purchase further editions by this author's interpretations for more appreciation of the many plays of Shakespeare.

Like I say about all Shakespeare: the Arden versions are my favorite. I own about a third of the Canon in them already. The footnotes are my favorite parts about it, and they're great because I don't have to carry my Lexicon around everywhere.King Lear is a brilliant play, all around. Between the family ties, the love and lust, and just the crazy existential dialogue, it's just a great read all-around.

The Modern Library/RSC Shakespeare series IS a very valuable addition. Inexpensive edition of the plays, helpful scene-by-scene summaries of the action, etc. But by far the most valuable part of the half dozen volumes I have studied is the "In Performance" sections. This is what sets this series apart from most others. Here, are performance histories detailing a variety of historic interpretations, interviews with contemporary directors and actors, revealing how they interpreted the text, and turned it into a stage drama. This Lear volume, unfortunately, is marred by the "temporally ethnocentric" and gross overemphasis upon the 1970 Peter Brook production, which perversely saw Lear as a Beckett or Brecht play. Instead of Shakespeare's profound, nuanced picture of a complex world of good and evil, with glimpses of transcendent, redeeming dimensions, we are given--as the proper touchstone to all future presentations--an absurdist, nihilistic vision of life, deliberately removing all affirmation of the worth of life, and of a distinction between good and evil! Hard to believe? Cf. pp. 166 ff. "Productions of Lear would {could?} never be the same after this." ??Even in this flawed volume, there is much to learn. And most of the other volumes I have studied in this series are not marred by such imbalanced "Mod" decadence. I hope the volume on TWELFTH NIGHT, with its gratuitous, stressed homosexualizing of several relationships, is not a sad omen for future volumes in the series.

"King Lear" is Shakespeare's most profound utterance. It is a work whose theme is love; its major concern is with the centrality of love in the formation of character and with justice, both social and divine. The final scene, which confirms this reading, is one of the great achievements of world literature. The play opens with the aging king dividing his kingdom among his three daughters in return for their declarations of love. King Lear gives love uncontrollably and expects to be loved in the same fashion. He tells us that he loved the little one, Cordelia, best (I.i.137, 245, & 336) and we must thus assume the most violent resentment on the part of the two elder daughters, who have learned to say not what they feel but what they ought to say. Cordelia's honestly proclaims that her future husband will of necessity have to share in her love with her father and this is understood by the latter as a complete rejection, worthy of curses and banishment. The "subplot" concerning Gloucester's two sons, Edgar and Edmund. We can understand Gloucester's love for both of his children as a relatively recent phenomena having required the gradual overcoming of his embarrassment at his younger son, Edmund's, illegitimacy (I.i. 10). That Edmund has overheard his father's disparaging opening comments to Kent is confirmed by his paraphrasing of them in the second scene (I.ii. 18) and that this shaming has been a part of Edmund's experience since childhood appears probable in light of his final, transformative reaction to the unexpected and unknown feelings of love and pity experienced by him at the end of the play. The motif of "nothing," "nothingness" is hammered throughout the play. Having given away his love and receiving none from his remaining daughters Lear becomes 'nothing,' ontologically empty ("Lear's shadow"). Edgar, likewise experiences his rejection by his father - on faulty and conspiratorial premises - as an annihilation of his being ("Edgar I nothing am"). "He childed like I fathered," says Edgar of his godfather Lear. The comparison is that between two egos who know only the need to love and have been annihilated by the rejections they have experienced from the individuals whom they love. Edgar's transformation into Tom of Bedlam is not only a practical disguise but an acting out of this loss of identity (consider that he continues to use mad Tom's vocal mannerisms even in soliliquy [III.vii.126]) and his refusal to reveal himself to his father perhaps until he is ready to undertake an act which will justify his being loved again (III.vii. 121-124).Those who love give away all; those who feel no love take everything in order to make up for the emptiness. Edmund, Regan, Goneril and Cornwall seem always conscious of their desire to conquer even more power. Yet those who suffer hardship in this play seem to react in two ways - 1) they experience *ever increasing degrees of empathy,* by which they commit themselves to the relief of others through acts of, and belief in, social justice, and 2) they *imagine a system of divine justice,* by which they attempt to reconcile themselves to what's been lost. Edgar testifies that he has witnessed madmen, buffeted by nature, threatening others to do them enforced "charity" by piercing their own numbed arms in terrifying display. We have just seen such a thing occur with Edmund in Act II, scene i. We also know that he has called upon Nature as his goddess. Thus what we have here (like 'the Turk' in "Othello") is a rare Shakespearean metaphor: Edmund is Nature. King Lear's own pronouncement to the howling storm on the heath - "Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire, are my daughters... I never gave you kingdom, call'd you children/ You owe me no subscription: then, let fall/ Your horrible pleasure" further illustrates the point. In "King Lear," Nature is the lack of love. It is loveless and existential. It is godless; god and the astrological being an ego defense. It is "nothing."The poetry of "King Lear" is magnificent, perhaps not quite achieving the measureless heights of "Macbeth" or "Othello," but sonorous and extraordinarily beautiful. The two feuding brothers, Edgar and Edmund, are among Shakespeare's most profound creations. The Duke of Cornwall is one of his great monsters. And King Lear is one of his most tragic heroes. The Folgers editions conflates the Quarto and Folio editions. This is common practice for Shakespeare but both versions are so different (Shakespeare died before he could edit his complete ouvre for publication) that many editors have recommended to their readers that they embrace either one or the other. I personally would not recommend this since I think thematically the work is more difficult to interpret without the combining of a few lines found in only one or the other of the two editions (Q's "He childed like I fathered," not found in F, goes a long way towards explaining Edgar's character). There are so many classic scenes in this masterpiece of masterpiece, and so much characterization filled with insight and wisdom, and subtlety in its construction and beauty in its poetry, that reading or re-reading this play is an experience quite unlike any other. It is *the* major work by one of *the* major artists in world culture.

The result is a top pick for any do-it-yourselfer who would learn Tagalog and actually apply it to a visit to the Philippines." —Midwest Book Review"It's a great book. The content is solid, and the explanations are clear." —Language Surfer blog"While these particular Tuttle textbooks are suitable for, and typically used in, classroom settings, including in some of the best universities in North America, they can also serve as an excellent out-of-class reference tool and can very well complement formal language classes or other study materials for the self-learner." —Lingholic blog

I am multi-lingual already – Beijing standard Mandarin Chinese, Russian, French, Kiswahili, and North Welsh, amongst a repertoire of others. I had been searching for a serious linguist's grammar of Tagalog, my wife's native language, ever since we met four years ago. Even an extended trip to the Philippines rendered nothing of sufficient depth, breadth, and challenge. My search continued here for something that could unlock and unfold the unique complexities of the beautiful language of Tagalog with the rigour that only a true linguist could could write, a rigour that a true linguist could appreciate. With Domigpe's and Domingo's Elementary Tagalog – Tara, Mag-Tagalog Tayo! – finally – I need search no longer. What had been baby steps in the language without a serious guide and accompaniment, now is leaps and bounds. The once intimidating, thoroughly elucidated with a linguist's precision, is now abundantly clear. As I charge on, at least two hours a day, unwilling to put it down, my enthusiasm burgeons from passion to obsession.Tagalog is accessible. One just needs the key, the right key. This is that key.

Easy way to learn tagalog. I've been going to the Philippines for years, but never learned more than a few words of tagalog. Now, armed with just some basic knowledge, I'm finding I'm enjoying the place more than ever. Highly recommended, effective way of learning Pilipino. I'm a long way from bi-lingual, but this has definitely enriched my experiences in this wonderful country.

I am new to learning Tagalog and this book was recommended to me by a native speaker. It is very helpful, as is the CD. An accompanying workbook may also be purchased that pairs well with this textbook. I love it! It has made my language learning both natural and easy.

Just okay - a good starter (the only one I found on Amazon, at least) for learning Tagalog. I find it more difficult to follow than the usual language book and I've studied many languages, but perhaps it's because there is no instructor. There are helpful audio CDs and I purchased the workbook to study along. I think it's an okay purchase. I just wanted the elementary / basic instruction for day to day life/phrases in the event I visit.

I haven't gotten very far into the book yet, just a few chapters. The authors seemed to have had difficulty deciding when to introduce information. I hate seeing, "You'll read more about this in another lesson". If you can't teach the lesson on a subject fully, don't introduce it.However, overall it is informative, though it may just be because I pick up on languages easily. I would recommend this book to someone who is trying to learn. The CD which comes with it is a helpful bonus.

It's ok. Not my style of learning. Probably not most people's style of learning. But it does tell you stuff. So yea, works.

Book arrived on time and in new condition. I have been able to learn alot with this textbook. I just would like to have all the vocabulary words on the CD. I would recommend to other learners.

A very good text book with an audio CD which reenforces the information given in the book. The book sections reference the CD as far as what section of the CD to review related to the chapter or exercise you are doing in the book. With the book and the workbook along with the Pimsleur course I should be able to tell my cohorts in my TESOL Masters class that I too speak a second language, the Tagalog language.

Five Proofs of the Existence of God, by Edward Feser

Review

"A watershed book. Feser has completely severed the intellectual legs upon which modern atheism had hoped to stand." -- Matthew Levering, James N. and Mary D. Perry Jr. Chair of Theology, Mundelein Seminary"A powerful and important book. The concluding chapter, where Feser replies to possible objections to his arguments, is a gem; it alone is worth the price of this excellent work." --Stephen T. Davis, Russell K. Pitzer Professor of Philosophy, Claremont McKenna College"Edward Feser is widely recognized as a top scholar in the history of philosophy in general, and in Thomistic and Aristotelian philosophy in particular. This book is a must-read for  anyone interested in natural theology. I happily and highly recommend it." -- J. P. Moreland, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Biola University"Refutes with devastating effect the standard objections to theistic proofs, from David Hume to the New Atheists." --Robert C. Koons, Professor of Philosophy, University of Texas at Austin"Yet another fine book by Edward Feser. He replies to (literally) all of the objections and shows convincingly how the most popular objections (the kind one hears in Introduction to Philosophy courses) are very often completely beside the point and, even when they're not, are 'staggeringly feeble and overrated'." --Alfred J. Freddoso, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame

In this book Feser competently argues that God exists given a certain Scholastic metaphysical framework. Whether you think the arguments succeed depends on whether that metaphysical framework is true. The Aristotelian proof argues from the actualization of potentials to something fully actual. The neo-Platonic proof argues from composite things to something simple and non-composite. The Rationalist proof argues from things that do not explain themselves to something that contains within itself its own sufficient reason for existence. The Thomistic proof argues from things whose essence is not identical to their existence to something whose essence must be identical to its existence. The Augustinian proof argues from the existence of eternal truths to an eternal mind that contains these truths.Feser devotes a chapter on the divine attributes and how the proofs entail them. He also devotes a chapter to objections of various kinds. Why did I give five stars? Even though I don't find the arguments compelling, I recommend the book. It's well-written, well-structured, and covers arguments and topics that generally don't get a lot of airtime in the modern God debate. The only possible fault of this book is that although Feser utilizes Scholastic metaphysics to undergird the proofs, he generally doesn't provide reasons to think those metaphysics are true. I don't know if this should be counted as a fault though, because Feser has another book entitled 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘴 which presumably (I haven't read it) provides reasons to accept the metaphysical framework that undergirds the proofs. As it is, 𝘍𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘧𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥 is a concise book, and a thorough explication of Scholastic metaphysics would turn it into a slog, so I don't fault Feser for leaving that job to his other book.P.S.This is NOT a book about Aquinas' Five Ways, nor is it merely a summary of other thinkers' arguments. Although these proofs have been around for centuries, the particular expression of them in this book is unique to Feser.

If you think God exists, read this book. If you don't think God exists, read this book. If you think it's impossible for human persons to know, for sure, if God exists, read this book. In short, read this book.Professor Feser shows that if you believe any of the following propositions, you should also believe that God exists:1. Change is real.2. The things we see, experience, and interact with are made up of parts.3. Abstract objects, such as universals, numbers, propositions, and possible worlds exist.4. The things we see have distinct essences and existences.5. The principle of sufficient reason is true.In addition, Professor Feser, in his characteristically succinct and thorough manner, demonstrates that the best objections to these classical proofs for God's existence simply aren't very good.Of course, these aren't the only proofs for God's existence. Personally, I believe the moral argument is the easiest one to grasp; the Kalam cosmological argument, especially as presented and defended by William Lane Craig, is also very good. The moral argument, specifically as it is made by C.S. Lewis in "Mere Christianity" is what made me realize the objective existence of God. However, the proofs presented in this excellent work by Feser only serve to make more robust my knowledge of God.If you're an atheist and want to honestly say you've encountered the best arguments for God's existence, read this book.

Edward Feser’s Five Proofs of the Existence of God takes five arguments and demonstrates that they prove with certainty that God exists, assuming that the premises are true. He shows that the premises are reasonable and does indeed present cogent arguments for believing that God exists. What is nice about this book is that his arguments demonstrate that God has many of the traits commonly associated with the ChristianGod, such as being all-good, all powerful, one, and omniscient. This is an outstanding book and deserves a wide readership.Note that the Five Proofs are not the same as Thomas Aquinas’s Five Proofs, though one of them is. The proofs were chosen for being powerful arguments. This book gives an argument for God’s existence based on the fact that abstract ideas exist, and since they can only exist ultimately in the mind of God, then God must exist. Very few books present that argument, which adds greatly to Five Proofs. The problem of universals is covered clearly, with Realism shown to be the correct understanding, and Nominalism and Conceptualism being false. It is rare to find the problem of universals presented so clearly, and the resolution of the problem so convincingly demonstrated.Another of the five arguments is the argument from the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which is also not often cited among arguments for God’s existence. Basically, the Principle of Sufficient Reason states that there is a good explanation for everything that happens in the universe, whether we can discover that reason or not. The argument is that everything needs a good reason for its existence, and the universe needs a good reason for its existence, and God is the only reasonable explanation for the universe and its many aspects. For example, a rational God explains why the laws of physics are rational and why humans have reason. The Principle of Proportionate Causality is also explained, which states that a cause cannot give what it doesn’t have. Mindless matter doesn’t have the ability to think, so a merely material universe can’t be the cause of rational minds in humans, but a rational God can give rationality to humans.Edward Feser also includes a good argument refuting David Hume’s supposed claim that miracles are violations of the laws of nature. His metaphor that miracles are like God playing a score (i.e. keeping nature going) then suddenly improving (i.e. performing miracles) is striking and poetic.Feser also relates how the precepts of natural theology can help us decide which religions are not true. Since natural theology demonstrates that God is rational, one, good, a person, and all-powerful, any religion that posits pantheism, or doesn’t have a God can’t be true. The last chapter refutes several of the arguments given by the New Atheists and shows that they are wrong. The author also includes a section refuting the “divine hiddenness” argument and does a good job. He probably should have stressed more that, if God truly revealed himself, many people would be intimidated into worshipping God; after all, one doesn’t rob a bank when there are 20 police cars outside it, and should God reveal himself unambiguously in all his power and omniscience, it would coerce many into worshipping God. Perhaps God doesn’t reveal himself more clearly because he wants those who follows who love Him rather than fear Him.If wisdom is more precious that rubies, then this book is worth at least seven rubies. Anyone who loves wisdom, God and the truth should buy and read this book.
