I think that a good suspense novel is hard to write believably and engage a reader all the way through. This novel was ok, but it took too long to really get started.I started listening with audio option, then chose to read at the end of the book. The narrator was very good and kept my interest at the begining, but the story got very convoluted towards the middle.New characters were introduced and decidedly wierd stuff happened, but it didn't seem to fit together well.Just when you would expect the real action to begin, the narrative would switch back to the childhood traumas of both main characters.I got kind of tired of their backstories and could have done with less sex scenes in the present time and more action to move the plot along. The ending was the only part that was suspenseful, but by then, I just wanted to finish the book. (less)
I wanted to love this book based on the reviews, but sadly did not. It never fully engaged me. I kept reading and while the last 25% of the book improved, it never kept me on the edge of my seat. I did not feel the timeline going back and forth was written well. It seemed confusing at times and did not all seem to line up at the end. Maybe it was just me. I am still interested in reading the authors other books. I have no doubt this author is exceptional; this particular book just did not really interest me.
Once again, Emily Carpenter hits it out of the park with a gripping psychological suspense, and a Southern Gothic setting that is a character in itself. Heath and Daphne are intriguing and complex; as I followed the twists and turns of their troubled marriage to a retreat at a creepy Victorian mansion in the North Georgia mountains, I found myself gripping the pages tighter and tighter, even as I couldn't stop turning. You won't want to put this book down, and it may even make you question how well you know the person sleeping next to you while you read...
Heath and Daphne appear to be kindred spirits, keeping their pasts hidden from each other. When Heath's nightmares begin and he wakes in the morning with no recollection of the violence, Daphne becomes concerned about the future of their relationship. In a show of concern for Daphne's worries, Heath recommends going to a week-long couples retreat for therapy. Daphne reluctantly agrees to go for Heath’s sake, but refuses to participate in the therapy. What follows is a spine tingling reveal of the extremes to which some people will go to hold on to other people, and the shocking reveals of both Heath's and Daphne's pasts. Can either of them escape the horrors...and come out alive? Well done, Emily Carpenter! Highly recommended for those who enjoy psychological thrillers.
4.5 StarsThis my first book by Emily Carpenter and now I'm wondering why that is. I need more now! In fact, that was how I felt while reading this book, a constant state of needing more information and needing it now.Every Single Secret is a psych-thriller with a very gothic feel to it. A creepy mansion, walls with eyes and a host of disturbing characters kept me on edge all the way through. I knew something was off, almost from the very beginning, but never managed to quite peg it, so when the twist came I was surprised, though not shocked. It was well written, engaging and full of characters that pulled me right in the story. I have already scoped out my next Emily Carpenter read and highly recommend this one.
I was totally engrossed & wholly engaged until Heath led Daphne to his horrifying trail of carnage. Her mood, already black, became darker still. As it turns out, they're both seriously messed-up.
Between her past and her present, Daphne is busy hiding secrets and discovering them. I loved this story as it kept me wondering and guessing throughout the story. It is a dark subject on many levels--psychopaths, child endangerment--so not for the faint of heart, but well worth the read.
This was such a great read! Well-written, fast paced, unique concept/plot, interesting characters, superbly atmospheric, excellent twists I didn’t predict .... all very entertaining and captivating. As I saw the last few pages getting closer, I didn’t want it to end yet.Very well done by Ms Carpenter!
