Joe Bridger was a rare person. Although not formally educated, he did display remarkable intelligence, learning several languages, learning how to survive in the wilds, and evidently he had a remarkable memory capable of forming detailed topological maps in his mind and keeping the information for years. For someone to survive all those years in the mountains with dangerous Indians and wildlife, and living off the land for food shelter and clothing takes more than luck. From Wikipedia: James Felix Bridger (March 17, 1804 – July 17, 1881) was among the foremost mountain men, trappers, scouts and guides who explored and trapped the Western United States during the decades of 1820–1850, as well as mediating between native tribes and encroaching whites. He was of English ancestry, and his family had been in North America since the early colonial period.Jim Bridger had a strong constitution that allowed him to survive the extreme conditions he encountered walking the Rocky Mountains from what would become southern Colorado to the Canada–US border. He had conversational knowledge of French, Spanish and several native languages. He would come to know many of the major European American explorers of the early west, including Kit Carson, George Armstrong Custer, Hugh Glass, John Frémont, Joseph Meek, and John Sutter. Bridger was a young contemporary of British and American pathfinders including Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, and William Sublette. In 1830, Smith and his associates sold their fur company to Bridger and his associates naming it the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Bridger was part of the second generation of mountain men and pathfinders who explored the American West that followed the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804.
I wanted to learn about Jim Bridger, one the West's great legends. This short book gives the reader information about his life, experiences, etc. in the West. As with most Western legends, not a lot is known his daily life, but only general facts and overviews are known and are given in the book. This book satisfied my desire to learn more about Jim Bridger.
An honest & credible look at a major figure of 19th century lore & the western frontier. Many anecdotal remembrances of people who personally knew and relied upon this mountainman & scout. The legend comes alive through the eyes of those who rode beside him.
This was an excellent account mostly direct from pioneers of Bridger's generation and the next generation. He was the real deal who lived a very exciting life and was loved by everyone he interacted with in the wilderness.
As you travel the western states you find places that either bare is name, or in the narrative there will be a reference to Jim Bridger. As written he was one person that help develop the west.
A very easy read for anyone interested in learning more about the greatest of the mountain men who guided and led those who came after.
Short and to the point, like Bridger himself. If you have been in this country for long you will acknowledge the enormity of his knowledge and of the vast help he must have been to those who were wise enough to seek his advice.
Great little book. It's a quick read but packed with interesting information. I read it before going to the Fort Bridger rendezvous this year.
