There are some valuable tools to understanding the the psychology of your own anger and the anger of those around you. However the revised edition heading in the description was a little bit confusing. No noted updates are shown since it was released in 1993.I respect my Christian values. However, I find sometimes sin can be used as a way to put others down in a sugar coated way when a person finds themselves struggling with what is a serious emotional or mental illness. In those cases I don't really see the value of preaching at someone who is already struggling and down on themselves. So it may not be the best resource for all bible based believers. The book could have used a bit more compassion.
I've browsed through many Anger Management books and found this one to be good. Despite the reviews about religion and Christianity I picked it up with an open, objective mind.As a person who has suffered with anger issues for more than 25 years I can say that I've had so much help from this book, even more help than my therapist. The impact of writing out personal things inside the book is very helpful to get a better understanding of the material and make it more personal. I've always felt it important to write my thoughts down to get a better understanding of myself, rather than just speaking them out loud to a stranger, and this book does that.I'll admit that there was alot of references to Christianity, but I was able to take the core beliefs (I DO believe in God, and love for all man) and put the book to that use. It has given me a greater understanding of myself and why I used to get so pissed off.Just understand that in order for Anger Management to really work, it will take time. The foundation may be laid out in a matter of minutes (depending on how quick you read), but the real work (changing your ways and outlook) takes time. Don't expect a quick fix because you will never find one. At least nothing that will last.
One thing I love about this book is that it is neutral and is gentle in its opinion. It wouldn't say "if you have been doing this you're toasted" rather it would suggest the alternatives (gently) and you can choose to better your next moves.I'm sure if you've read this far you're the omega male or female that's getting pancaked by other dominant controlling type ppl. This then is a savior! Helps you to be free from those traps and unnecessary anger, finding your true worth! Don't let those controlling you know about this though - or they'll use this against you!!! LOL!"The truth will set you free." Best wishes to you who's subordinates in unhealthy relationship. :)
I was hesitant about a Christian based anger book but was extremely surprised. Really helped me put my anger in check and put my life on a better path. With God back in my life it filled a huge void and my anger has regressed considerably. This book really helps you identify the many forms of anger and what unmet needs are the root cause to it. Really is a life changer. If you are reading this review it means you have already looked inside yourself and admitted you need help so please do yourself a favor and buy this book. This book will teach you there is nothing wrong seeking outside help for anger.
Working on dissertation on conflict management. Anger is one of the most difficult emotions with which to deal. The exercises help to calm down the environment by helping individuals to deall with their own anger. Reconciliation is more possible when people "think through" issues and see different perspectives rather than blindly arguing through emotions. Recommend to everyone--who experiences anger when expectations are not met--what to do with the emotion is critical.
Sadly, I have struggled with anger for most of my life. I can honestly say this workbook has been a key in helping me turn things around. It is so well written, based on biblical truth and practical. I was able to see the roots, the main reasons for my anger and apply truth to them- thus diffusing the anger. This is truly worth the money and time needed to invest!! The number one resource to work through/ gain understanding for hurts and hang ups!
I use this with my clients who need Anger management. Workbook sheets are very helpful
For anyone that struggles with anger and you have faith in the Lord, then this is the book for you. I totally turned my life around. I was on the verge of loosing my family due to my anger issues, so, with nothing to lose, I went through this course. When I finished the book, I had learned how to deal with my anger and it helped me save my marriage.

Great book, good read and my special needs daughter really understands now what the 4th of July is all about!
A good book that is close to a great book for children regarding Independence Day in the United States. Wonderful pictures and includes history as well as popular ways to celebrate our country. Includes the Declaration of Independence as part of the story rather than just talking about fireworks as so many children's books do.My only disappointment in this book is in the back, under the heading of "Just the Facts". For "What:" Independence day is defined as "a cheerful holiday that emphasizes freedom, equality, patriotism, and togetherness", all true and good descriptives of the day and what it feels like and looks like. However, not a great definition of what it actually is: a day to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, what that meant, who were the heros who signed, why they signed and why Independence was declared. Must teach our children the full meaning. Since Constitution Day is not usually observed by many Independence Day is also becoming a day to review that foundational document as well.Would still recommend the book as mostly good, just somewhat incomplete in glossary definitions.

Geerhardus Vos (1862-1949) was an American Calvinist theologian who taught Biblical Theology at Princeton Theology from 1893-1932. He wrote other books, such as Biblical Theology,The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Kingdom of God, and the Church,Pauline Eschatology,Redemptive History and Biblical Interpretation: The Shorter Writings of Geerhardus Vos, etc. The other volumes in this series are Reformed Dogmatics: Anthropology,Reformed Dogmatics: Christology,Reformed Dogmatics: Soteriology, and Reformed Dogmatics: Ecclesiology, The Means of Grace, Eschatology. The Preface to the series points out, “The ‘Reformed Dogmatics’ stems from the period 1888-1893, when … the young Vos taught systematic theology (dogmatics) at the Theological School of the Christian Reformed Church, later renamed Calvin Theological Seminary. [It] was first published in Dutch as a hand-written manuscript in five volumes, in 1896. It was subsequently transcribed and printed in 1910.â€The series is written in a “question-and-answer†format of, say, the Westminster Larger Catechism. For instance, Question 33 asks, “IS God present everywhere in the same way?†and he explains, “No, He reveals His presence in a different way in heaven than in the place of the lost, and differently on earth than above.†(Pg. 12)He rejects the concept of “middle knowledge†(e.g., On Divine Foreknowledge), stating, “knowledge… presupposes absolute certainty. Only what is certain and sure can be known… therefore, whatever is free and uncertain in itself cannot be the object of knowledge… the opponents have only invented this knowledge in order to unite God’s foreknowledge with their free will. And that they seek to unite two things here that logically exclude each other. Freedom of action in a Remonstrant sense and advance knowledge of that action are not compatible… God’s eternity… is simply overthrown by this doctrine of absolutely free will, withdrawn from God’s decree… if He thus must take up within Himself the influence of the temporal, then this destroys His eternity. The doctrine of middle knowledge denies precisely what could make it comprehensible.†(Pg. 19)He states that we must NOT seek a “decisive proof†for the Trinity in the Old Testament, because, “Old Testament revelation was not finished but only preparatory… Under the Old Testament’s dispensation the concept of the oneness of God had to be deeply impressed upon Israel’s consciousness in the face of all polytheistic inclinations… We must not imagine that the Old Testament saints were able to read in the Old Testament everything that we can read there in the light of the New.†(Pg. 38)He explains the Trinity: “There is only one divine being… In this one God are three modes of existence, which we refer to by the word ‘person’ and which are, each one, this only true God… these persons are called, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit… These three persons, although together the one true God, are nevertheless distinguished from each other insofar as they assume objective relations toward each other, address each other, love each other, and can interact with each other.†(Pg. 43)He argues that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the father AND the Son, “although the Greek church denies this. Different motives underlie this denial. It agreed above all with the mystical direction of the Greek church… Proofs for procession from the Son also are the following: a) If the Spirit does not proceed from the Son, then there is a point in the Godhead where Son and Spirit do not affect each other but are separated… b) The Son sends the Spirit in time. He would not be able to do this is the Spirit did not proceed from Him eternally… c) The Spirit is called the Spirit of the Son as the Spirit of Christ no less than the Spirit of the Father… d) All that the Spirit has, He has from the Son no less than from the Father…†(Pg. 72-73)Of God’s decrees, he observes, “God’s decree is universal; it encompasses all things… there is no distinction in the firmness with which things are determined, between the physical and the moral, the good and the evil. All are equally established by God with equally essential certainty… [Otherwise] that to which the decree does not extend remains uncertain and would intrude in an unsettling fashion into what is certainly determined. On this all-encompassing character of God’s decree and the certainty attendant on it rests the possibility of all knowledge, for without reality as certain, knowledge is not possible.†(Pg. 82-83) Nevertheless, “In the execution of this decree… there is nothing that can make God a cause of sin. On this point Scripture speaks as emphatically as possible.†(Pg. 96)He comments on Romans 9:18: “The emphasis falls on the initial words, ‘On whom He wills He shows mercy, whom He wills he hardens.’ The apostle intends to say there is no other reason for the different assignments of destiny than the absolute will of God. And this is true both for the destiny of misery as well as for the destiny of blessedness.†(Pg. 122)He suggests, “We do not have to occupy ourselves at length here about whether this reasoning is infralapsarian or supralapsarian. However, if our explanation is correct, then an infralapsarian explanation will not do justice to the words of the apostle. The question of the vessel [Rom 9:20-21] would then have never read, ‘Why have you made me thus?’ but at the most, ‘Why when I already was as I was did you ordain me to this end?’….The image of the potter does not intend to teach us that by virtue of His predestination God makes man a sinner. But there is certainly involved, we think, that in His decree regarding the destiny of creatures, God includes the sin that men themselves commit, and that the concern of His decree with sin occupies a place in His predestination of what men will be and to what end they will serve.†(Pg. 129)He notes, “Election as a discriminating election is at the same time an entirely free election. But free is still something other than arbitrary. Election would not be free if God were led by motives that He had not derived from Himself. Election would have been arbitrary if God had been entirely without any motives, something that cannot be reconciled with His wisdom… Suitability or the purposes of election is not the motivating cause in God but is much more its fruit.†(Pg. 134)Later, he adds, “The question is not whether sin comes into consideration as a factor in the decree of election and of rejection… One frequently hears the claim that those who place election above the fall teach that God has ordained men for eternal bliss and eternal misery only because He willed to do so and without considering their sin. But that is a conclusion that is not present in supralapsarianism… With equally good right one could derive a variety of conclusions from infralapsarianism from which everyone must recoil, since they seem to attack the foundation of God’s virtues.†(Pg. 144-145) He admits, however, that supralapsarianism suffers from “great harshnessâ€: “However, one should certainly keep in view that this harshness resides in the doctrine of God’s decree as such, and supralapsarianism merely brings it out clearly.†(Pg. 150)He says that there are three interpretations of Genesis 1 & 2: “the allegorical, the mythical and the historical. The first two views, however, are untenable because within the narrative of Scripture the creation narrative is interwoven like a link in the chain of God’s saving acts. God does not make a chain of solid gold, in which the final link is a floral wreath. If the creation history is an allegory, then the narrative concerning the fall and everything further that follows can also be allegory. The writer of the Pentateuch presents his work entirely as history.†(Pg. 161) Later, he adds, “The entire creation aimed at man as its completion. It is difficult to accept that preparing for this goal took thousands of years.†(Pg. 168) However, he notes that one “who holds that the days are long time periods [should not] be regarded a heretic.†(Pg. 169)And of course, he rejects evolution: “This theory claims that everything has developed, and is still developing, from a single instance of matter by the working of certain natural laws. The theory of evolution, however, does not have an answer to the question where that matter and those laws came from. It can therefore not be a substitute for the doctrine of creation and is based, moreover, on deism.†(Pg. 182)This series will be of great interest to those seriously studying Reformed theology.
Classic! His biblical theology is excellent as well!
7/10An laconic ensample of perspicuity, terseness, and incisive logic modelled on the old summae in form, but with modern Reformed content. Easy to read and well-formatted, this straightforward text doesn't mince words, nor is it much watered down to contemporary tastes.Weak on method and lacking prolegomena, this short and to the point century-old text covers more ground in ten pages and with less ten-thousand dollar words than any modern text I am familiar with does in fifty. However, this volume contains little-to-no original thought, but is an excellent summation of the tradition as handed down -- summations which are rare today. Little prior knowledge necessary; an excellent introductory text sure to raise the level of discourse in the academy if widely adopted. A worthy successor for the Reformed to the role played in medieval universities by Aquinas' ST or in later Reformed thought by Turretin's Elenctic Institutes [though oh how far theology has fallen since the days of Aquinas! I guess all the Aquinean intellects go in to banking or science now--Ed.] - a solid foundation - in an age where schoolchildren are no longer taught rhetoric or term logic, and Aristotelianism and its method are no longer unquestioned and uncontested as the only live philosophical contenders, in a world of fractured and diverse worldviews.A standout intriduction the field, though if one seeks original research or revisionary scholarship, seek elsewhere, such as in Jensen's 'The Triune God' or Bavinck's 'Reformed Dogmatics' vol II. (Or, for a more-than-slightly-heretical social Trinitarian view, Moltmann's 'Trinity and Kingdom'.)
Great content, easy read but too expensive
I have been looking forward to buying this!! Very good but consice.

“[Robert Fitzgerald’s translation is] a masterpiece . . . An Odyssey worthy of the original.” –The Nation “[Fitzgerald’s Odyssey and Iliad] open up once more the unique greatness of Homer’s art at the level above the formula; yet at the same time they do not neglect the brilliant texture of Homeric verse at the level of the line and the phrase.” –The Yale Review “[In] Robert Fitzgerald’s translation . . . there is no anxious straining after mighty effects, but rather a constant readiness for what the occasion demands, a kind of Odyssean adequacy to the task in hand, and this line-by-line vigilance builds up into a completely credible imagined world.” –from the Introduction by Seamus Heaney

About the Author
Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives. He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer – the Iliad and the Odyssey – are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.In the Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller’s tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope. We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact ‘Homer’ may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps ‘the hostage’ or ‘the blind one’. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years’ time.

REVISED 11/07/16: Homer's ILIAD should be read by every literate person who strives to be well-educated, and Caroline Alexander's 2015, modern translation is an excellent way to read it. It is sound, solid, clear and direct, and respectful of Homer's original. Her English syntax is natural and flowing, understandable but not (as in some other recent, modern versions) flippant or too colloquial. I rate the translation 5-stars, though I was initially tempted to rate this ebook edition of it at least one star lower because of its formatting. As very good as Alexander's translation is, this ebook edition doesn't do it justice with regard to its textual formatting. Between indents and long-line carry-overs, the left margin unevenly zig-zags in-and-out on a Kindle screen. Just when I thought I had it figured out some double-indents appeared to add to the confusion. Sadly, downloading a sample won't reveal this; the sample will only provide pages from the Introduction, whose modern prose is quite properly and comfortably presented. It is the poetry of the ILIAD itself whose indented lines are so annoyingly erratic, and this will only be evident to those who actually purchase it and read beyond the sample. Interestingly, in the very first few screens of this ebook (which do appear in the sample), a note from the publisher appears concerning this matter, apparently recognizing it as a possible source of confusion but essentially saying (in effect) that's how it is on a small-screen device, it's the nature of the beast, and readers must try to get used to it. And so I am trying, mollified somewhat by the fact that I paid only $.99 for it -- rather than $14.99 (its original price) -- during a special sales-promotion period. But more importantly, I have since discovered the formatting is IDEAL if the text is viewed in wider-screen, landscape mode on one's Kindle device. If you are able to make that adjustment (something my Kindle Paperwhite could not do until the last upgrade), the formatting problem is virtually solved and the long lines appear comfortably normal.I have read dozens of different translations of the ILIAD, and though I find Alexander's translation to be highly commendable, there ARE other great ones available (even one or two good FREE ones), many of them identified under FYI at the end of this review. Nevertheless, because this one is particularly well-done and desirable, you may even wish to obtain a hardcovered ($39.99) or paperback ($19.99) edition of it as a "keeper copy." (I intend to seek a less expensive used copy.)There have been numerous translations of the ILIAD in recent years, but while I suspect in time many of them will fall by the wayside, this one may not. Caroline Alexander's stands a good chance to remain, not only because it is THE best among most recent ones, but because it is ONE of the best among ALL translations of the ILIAD. But great though it is, it will survive in the economic marketplace only if it is competitively priced with those others. Happily, its ebook price has come down from $14.99 to $12.99 and more recently to $8.99 (making it a strong contender).Caroline Alexander is also the author of THE WAR THAT KILLED ACHILLES: THE TRUE STORY OF HOMER'S "ILIAD" AND THE TROJAN WAR (Viking Penguin, 2009). Those who enjoy her ILIAD may wish to read it.FYI: The first translation of the ILIAD was by George Chapman (1611), a formal and majestic Elizabethan English version in verse that is of interest today mainly in connection to its role in literary history. Two, free, public domain versions by Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley Derby (1862) and by Theodore Alois Buckley (1873) are pretty unpleasant to read; skip them. It's probably best to also steer clear of one by William Cowper (1791). Two old translations that remain popular, are easy to obtain in public domain editions, and ARE worth reading are by Alexander Pope (1715-20, in verse) and Samuel Butler (1898, in very readable prose). A once highly regarded one by Andrew Lang, Walter Leaf, and Ernest Myers (1883) was used by the Modern Library until replaced by Ennis Rees' wonderful translation (1963), my favorite. The best ILIAD translation is arguably by Richmond Lattimore (1951) with Robert Fitzgerald's (1974) being a strong contender for second-best. A 1938 one by W.H.D. Rouse is serviceable and generally okay. Likewise, Robert Graves offers a novelized version (1959) that is very readable but not a strict translation. Three excellent newer ones are by Robert Fagles (1990), Peter Jones (a superb 2003 revision of E.V. Rieu's popular 1950 version), and this one by Caroline Alexander (2015). Peter Green's highly literate translation (2015) is technically excellent but not as readable as the three just mentioned. Several other good, recent ones are by Michael Reck (1994, but now hard-to-find), Ian Johnston (2006), and A.S. Kline (2009). Three recent ones that I don't particularly care for are by Stephen Mitchell (2011, who omits too much textual content), Stanley Lombardo (1997), and Barry B. Powell (2013). These are just SOME of the other translations available.
UPDATED 09/13/17: Homer's "Iliad" is a truly 5-star great work of literature, and I certainly agree with all the other reviewers who extol its virtues, but the person who translates this epic poem into English from the archaic Greek is all-important to one's appreciation and enjoyment of it. One needn't suffer through a poor translation when good ones are available. The public domain translation by Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley Derby (hereafter referred to as Lord Derby) -- FOR WHICH THIS REVIEW WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN -- is outdated and not particularly good; it is certainly not enjoyable to read. (For that reason, I suspect few of the rave reviewers, though they quite rightly love and enjoy the "Iliad," have actually endured THAT particular public domain translation of it.)This review is now attached to OTHER editions by (perhaps) OTHER translators; hopefully they will be identified in the Kindle Store blurb so you can choose a good one (and avoid Lord Derby's, which I have rated 2-stars). Disappointingly, the AmazonClassics edition does not identify its translator (seemingly Derby, but in any case, just as bad), though it HAS added line numbers.Faithfulness to the original language AND readability are what one seeks in any translation of the "Iliad," and the translator must strike a proper balance between the two. Greek sentences are structured differently from English sentences, and adhering too strictly to Greek word order and syntax will result in very awkward English. Throw Homer's poetic form into the equation and the result can be a very unreal English syntax. The translator has to determine what Homer said and meant (back then) in Greek and decide how BEST to communicate that to us (today) in English. There is no particular virtue in reading a sometimes convoluted Elizabethan or Victorian rendering of the "Iliad" in iambic pentameter or heroic couplets (since Homer used neither) unless one especially enjoys reading such. In fact, foundational differences in the two languages prevent a true equivalence in English of Homer's original poetic structure in Greek; that is the reason why many translators, considering any such versification to be artificial at best and dishonest at worst, render this work in prose. But at the very least Homer's poetic form was comparatively simpler and his linguistic expression was more direct than some older translators using English poetical formats make him seem; that is why other translators now often choose free verse as being an acceptable alternative to either complex metrical forms or prose.Of course, being readable or "understandable" is not the same as being "easy," and being too simple or too contemporary is no more of a virtue than being too difficult or too old-fashioned; rendering Homer's Greek into remedial-reader English or today's slangy vernacular is inappropriate, inaccurate and does the modern reader a disservice -- so one must choose one's "Iliad" (and one's translator of it) very carefully (a task not made any easier by countless Kindle Store editions -- like the one from AmazonClassics -- whose blurbs fail to identify the translator, or which seem to describe one translation but actually provide another).Below (in no particular order) are various translations (most, but not all of them, good) that I have read and can personally attest to. Several are available as ebooks; others may have to be obtained new or used in paperback or hardcover. Some adopt a poetic format; the others (which I have specifically indicated) are in prose.(1) Robert Fagles' 1990 free verse translation from Penguin is particularly readable (and the introductory information by Bernard Knox is invaluable). Perhaps due to its having been somewhat over-hyped, academicians now seem less enthralled by it than they once were, some on the grounds that Fagles does not always strictly adhere to Homer -- but usually that claim is made when comparing Fagles' to more literal translations, ones that are more scholarly but much less readable. I find his version quite sound, and I (and many others) still like it. I think it merits serious consideration as an excellent first choice and a contender for favorite translation.(2) E.V. Rieu's original 1950 prose version (from Penguin) was very understandable but in some specific instances treated Homer a tad too freely. This has been remedied in the present prose version, expertly updated by Peter Jones in 2003. I liked the original very much, but I like the update even better. This is also a very good first choice and a favorite of many.(3) W.H.D. Rouse provided a sometimes loose but generally serviceable, 1938 prose rendering which was long available as a popular, low-priced paperback. At one time this self-proclaimed "plain language" version was widely used in many public schools because it was inexpensive and considered easier-to-understand than other (pre-1938) versions then available; with newer versions today, that ease is debatable. An ebook edition of it as a Signet Classic from Penguin is currently available in the Kindle Store.(4) Ennis Rees' refreshing, 1963 free verse translation from Random House/Modern Library is my favorite and not too dissimilar in style from Fagles' but (perhaps) more straight-forward. At present, it may not be easy to locate a copy outside of a used book store since it seems to be out-of-print.(5) Michael Reck's 1994 version, from HarperCollins, stresses its adherence to the oral tradition and is an honest, solid, respectful, and understandable translation. Though it seems to be lesser known, it is faithful to the Greek yet with comfortable English syntax. It also is not easy to find; an ebook edition, available when I originally wrote this in 2012, has sadly since disappeared from the Kindle Store.(6) Alfred Hurd Chase & William G. Perry Jr., wrote a prose version in 1950 once available in paperback from Bantam and used in schools. I haven't seen this lately, but it is very readable, and I treasure my battered old copy.(7) Richmond Lattimore's VERY accurate 1951 translation is published by the University of Chicago. It is much heralded but more scholarly and more difficult to read than other modern versions; it is widely regarded as THE very best translation. While I recognize its true greatness, it is not my favorite due to its awkward English syntax (making it, for me, a chore to read).(8) Robert Fitzgerald's 1974 translation from Doubleday is very highly regarded, but it is not an easy read. Many names are spelled less familiarly (such that "Achilles" becomes "Akhilleus"). I have a love-hate relationship to this version. It would not be my first choice for story comprehension and ease-of-reading, but its rich visual imagery and keen word-play amply reward anyone willing to make the effort to read it and devote the time to fully savor it. As I become disenchanted by the shallow simplicity and flippancy of some newer translations, I find this one becoming ever more appealing to me. After Lattimore, this is generally regarded by many as the second-best translation.(9) Robert Graves made an exciting novel-like, prose "translation" in 1959 titled "The Anger of Achilles" which is literate, generally respectful to the original, and particularly enjoyable. This lively version is great fun to read -- though debatably not a "true" and proper translation -- and an ebook edition will be found in the Kindle Store.(10) Stanley Lombardo's well-received 1997 translation is one I didn't fully read, because what I did read of it didn't impress me. Both in tone and in linguistic style, I found it to be an odd and inconsistent mix of formal and informal, noble words and deeds juxtaposed with jarring colloquialisms. I am probably in the minority, but I did not like this version.(11) Alexander Pope's classic version (1715-1720) is arguably more Pope than Homer, though some people love his heroic couplets, and it IS truly a poetic masterpiece in its own right. For many Pope fans, THIS is the one and only "Iliad," and if Homer didn't write his this way, he SHOULD have.(12) William Cowper's 1791, blank verse version demonstrates, by comparison, just how good Pope's is. Cowper's rendering results in awkward English syntax that is not as much to be read as deciphered. When I have to mentally re-translate a translation, I seek another.(13) Stephen Mitchell's 2011 translation demonstrates that being new and easy isn't necessarily always better. Like Lombardo, he uses too much inappropriate and sometimes jarring colloquial English, but unlike all the others, he expunges quite a few sections (and one entire book) of traditional text he feels are post-Homeric additions. (But what if he is wrong?) Given the accretive nature of this epic at virtually every stage in its development and transmission to us, this excision seems ill-advised. Being thus different in material-content from ALL the others, this ipso facto abridgment causes it to be something of a secondary or niche translation.(14) Andrew Lang, Walter Leaf, and Ernest Myers rendered the "Iliad" into late 19th century, "modern" English in their 1883 prose version. Although slightly old-fashioned in style, it is quite readable and has a reputation for accuracy. My copy is an old Modern Library Giant.(15 & 16): Two new translations currently available in the Kindle Store, one by Ian Johnston (2006) and the other by Barry P. Powell (2013), I have only sampled. I found nothing dramatically wrong with either of them, except a colloquialism or two in Powell's that seemed incongruous to me, such as when he has Agamemnon say to his men, "So don't rub me the wrong way" (Book 1, Line 33). Both pass muster in that Homer is generally honestly and powerfully rendered, but I personally don't care for Powell's translational flippancy and style. Neither translator offers a significant qualitative improvement over other recent translations, though Johnston comes close, and I prefer him to Powell.(17) Caroline Alexander's 2015 translation from HarperCollins DOES offer a superb and significant improvement over other recent translations, and I highly recommend it. Without a doubt the best among new ones, it is also superior to many old ones. Though solid and true to Homer, her English syntax is direct and natural, never flippant or colloquial. The ebook formatting of its long lines, necessarily divided on small-screen, Kindle-type devices, is uneven and distracting -- but that is easily remedied by switching to landscape mode.(18) Peter Green's 2015 translation, published by the University of California Press, is rightly praised for its faithfulness to Homer's Greek (not unlike Lattimore) and its lush poetic imagery, but because of that, its English syntax is not always as smooth or direct as might be desired. Nevertheless, it is superior in many ways to other recent versions mentioned above (by Johnston, Lombardo, Mitchell, and Powell), but NOT (in my opinion) to Caroline Alexander's (which I find more readable).(19) A.S. Kline's 2009 translation provides a version for the average, non-specialist reader and is currently bargain-priced at only $1.99, but his heavy use of commas offsetting every phrase makes for choppy reading.(20) George Chapman was the first translator of Homer, and his formal but majestic, Elizabethan verse edition of 1611 was (and by some, still is) highly regarded. Today, its interest to us is more in the realm of literary history than as a practical choice for general reading.(21) Theodore Alois Buckley's public domain version (1873) is no better than Lord Derby's, and like it, should probably best be avoided.(22) Samuel Butler's sturdy, 1898 prose version is worth considering (and I will say more about it below as a public domain alternative to Lord Derby's).The above list is by no means complete -- there are MANY others -- but it hints at the number and variety of translations that exist. Each of these translations (whether prose or poetry) has particular strengths and weaknesses as well as supporters and detractors, and none is perfect. That, not unexpectedly, creates some robust debate among readers of them. But, in my opinion, most of them are preferable to the public domain version by Lord Derby.I would certainly encourage you to consider trying some or all of the above, but I might suggest (purely as a practical and inexpensive starting point) the public domain, prose translation by Samuel Butler, available for free from various online sources. A free verson may not be currently offered in the Kindle Store, but several well-formatted editions are sold there for as little as $.99, and for that low price some even include Butler's translation of "The Odyssey." Although a well-known, late 19th century translator of Homer's two epics and the favorite of many readers, Samuel Butler isn't necessarily the scholar's favorite, and (like virtually every other translator of Homer) he has a few idiosyncrasies [see the NOTE below]. Therefore, he may not be considered the "best" translator from an academic perspective, but Samuel Butler's English IS straightforward, comparatively easy-to-read, and appropriately majestic but quite understandable; you will certainly be able to better appreciate and enjoy the drama and sweep of the "Iliad" in HIS version rather than struggle with the awkward English of Lord Derby's.NOTE: One of Butler's idiosyncracies (which is by no means unique to him) is a preference for using the names of Roman deities rather than the Greek (as in "Jove" rather than "Zeus"). He did so because he felt readers of his time were more familiar with the Roman names; today, the opposite is true. I do, however, own two hardcovered editions of Butler's translation in which all the Greek names have been restored, so presumably there MAY be a similarly treated ebook available (though I haven't yet found it). Not all (nor even, most) Greek names have been so treated by Butler; "Achilles," for example, remains "Achilles" (though "Odysseus" does become "Ulysses"). But for most readers the occasional appearance of a Roman name should prove to be little more than a minor distraction from an otherwise enjoyable text. Since no translation is perfect, at least this imperfection is quite bearable.ADDENDUM: Today the distinctions between poetry and prose treatments are fading due to the replacement of old, rigid metrical forms with new, free verse translations that are as direct, pleasant and comfortable-to-read as their prose counterparts. By going with the flow and reading the text as written, adhering to punctuation, pausing at commas and stopping at periods, but NOT slavishly and artificially stopping at the end of lines UNLESS punctuation dictates, readers should find in these free verse translations language as natural and understandable as that contained in prose versions. With so many wonderful translations currently available (whether in prose or in poetry), NOW is truly a great time to find and read an "Iliad" that's just right for you.

I've been working with polymer clay for about 20 years and I have purchased over 100 books on polymer clay, some good, some bad. This is one f the better books that I have purchased. This instructions are very clear and are step-by-step, with photos. What I found really wonderful about this book was the fact that the author added recipes to go with the items she made in clay. Like she made cinnamon roll earrings and with that she added an actual cinnamon roll recipe. There are many other recipes that coincide with the polymer clay items in the book. All around a beautifully written book.
I LOVE this little book!If you only get one book on this subject THIS is the one to get.I have recently bought five different books on this same subject - none of them was as nice as this one. It is is so simple to understand. The well written instrucitons are clear and easy to follow - even if you have absolutely no background in this medium (I am a total novice, and I understood!). There are beautifully done photos .Some of the other books offer final products which are disappointing - they end up plooking like they were made by grade school students.Every single one of these projects is really really cool - something with a high resale potential.I highly recommend this book.
I love it. Admittedly it's more of a beginner's book on how to sculpt, it's still enjoyable enough that it's fine. And a refresher is never a bad thing. It carries techniques I hadn't thought of as well as giving the reader something quick and fun to try with out feeling pressured about their abilities. Even if the best you could manage was a lopsided ashtray for your granddad as a kid, this book gives you a great leg up to doing cute and fun projects that will help you learn to do better and making things you won't feel the least bit embarrassed about admitting you made them.
This is the perfect book for anyone getting into polymer clay. Not only do you get some great "recipes" for making some cute food items, but you get a great introduction to the tools used to make them.I was into bead making, with polymer clay, years ago. Coming back to the hobby I decided to peruse Youtube and found that I was out of the loop. What is this chalk stuff they are using to color with and what are those tools called? This book has you covered!
This is a great book to read. I gave it 5 star because I love it has almost each explanation illustrated with great pictures. The pictures look so amazing that even if you get kind of discourage when reading the book thinking is too hard to do, the pictures will get you there. The pictures inspires you too continue so you can see the great results and great ideas comes to your mind while making your projects. It has a lot of information about the materials to use and why using those. The artist also explaing in detail how and what she uses to give different kind of textures to the clay. Great for everyone. I love to work with my daughter who is 9 years old.
I bought several polymer clay books online and I have to say that this is my favorite. I am a beginner and what i like most about this book is that everything is written in a step-by-step format with pictures, and that they start out each project with a reasonable amount of clay so you're not wasting a fortune. Other books that I bought online for polymer clay miniatures, start out with giant amounts of clay which is ridiculously expensive to make. This book is fun, well written, and teaches you how to wear your creations....what's cuter than ice cream cone earrings???
Easy to follow instructions, lovely photos and a great beginners introduction to polymer clay in the front of the book. The style of work reminds me of some of the cute Japanese miniature food toys and doll sets that are so hard to get in the US. With this book you can start making you own, be if for doll dioramas or jewelry (as shown in the book). It is a great book to show people who have a fear of polymer clay, the ideas are so cute they will want to try making a few. :)
I love this book! I have made SEVERAL items out of this book. I have been working with polymer clay for over 10 years now and this book certainly got me to learn new techniques. I made the cinnamon rolls, pretzels, tacos and sugar cookies.I love how the book takes you step by step and is very clear in their directions. I also love the give you a recipe for a sugar scrub for your hands, which have yet to try. But I do love Bath and Body works hand soap to remove polymer clay from my hands.

Joe Bridger was a rare person. Although not formally educated, he did display remarkable intelligence, learning several languages, learning how to survive in the wilds, and evidently he had a remarkable memory capable of forming detailed topological maps in his mind and keeping the information for years. For someone to survive all those years in the mountains with dangerous Indians and wildlife, and living off the land for food shelter and clothing takes more than luck. From Wikipedia: James Felix Bridger (March 17, 1804 – July 17, 1881) was among the foremost mountain men, trappers, scouts and guides who explored and trapped the Western United States during the decades of 1820–1850, as well as mediating between native tribes and encroaching whites. He was of English ancestry, and his family had been in North America since the early colonial period.Jim Bridger had a strong constitution that allowed him to survive the extreme conditions he encountered walking the Rocky Mountains from what would become southern Colorado to the Canada–US border. He had conversational knowledge of French, Spanish and several native languages. He would come to know many of the major European American explorers of the early west, including Kit Carson, George Armstrong Custer, Hugh Glass, John Frémont, Joseph Meek, and John Sutter. Bridger was a young contemporary of British and American pathfinders including Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, and William Sublette. In 1830, Smith and his associates sold their fur company to Bridger and his associates naming it the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Bridger was part of the second generation of mountain men and pathfinders who explored the American West that followed the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804.
I wanted to learn about Jim Bridger, one the West's great legends. This short book gives the reader information about his life, experiences, etc. in the West. As with most Western legends, not a lot is known his daily life, but only general facts and overviews are known and are given in the book. This book satisfied my desire to learn more about Jim Bridger.
An honest & credible look at a major figure of 19th century lore & the western frontier. Many anecdotal remembrances of people who personally knew and relied upon this mountainman & scout. The legend comes alive through the eyes of those who rode beside him.
This was an excellent account mostly direct from pioneers of Bridger's generation and the next generation. He was the real deal who lived a very exciting life and was loved by everyone he interacted with in the wilderness.
As you travel the western states you find places that either bare is name, or in the narrative there will be a reference to Jim Bridger. As written he was one person that help develop the west.
A very easy read for anyone interested in learning more about the greatest of the mountain men who guided and led those who came after.
Short and to the point, like Bridger himself. If you have been in this country for long you will acknowledge the enormity of his knowledge and of the vast help he must have been to those who were wise enough to seek his advice.
Great little book. It's a quick read but packed with interesting information. I read it before going to the Fort Bridger rendezvous this year.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–Drawing on letters, biographical works, archival pictures, and Austens novels, Locke offers a readable biography for students who cant manage a larger work. The language is uncomplicated and the topics are aimed at helping readers better understand Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Austens other writings. Some of the topics discussed include childhood, family, village and social life, manners, customs, entertainment, historical background, career, and writing style. The numerous illustrations, many in color, include reproductions, drawings, portraits, maps, sketches, engravings, silhouettes, and facsimiles of Austens letters and writings. Students will be able to learn from both the pictures and the text what Austen and her characters looked like, how they lived, what they wore, what the English countryside and houses looked like, and what they did with their time. From Booklist
Gr. 8-11. In an impressive first effort for YAs, Locke offers a biography of a charismatic figure whose life, gratifyingly enough, offers many of the same elements as her beloved novels. Locke begins by suggesting ways Austen's bookish family environment may have kindled her genius, swiftly moving on to later details that will resonate most with teens: She loved parties; she plunged into prickly funks during which she "could not anyhow continue to find people agreeable"; and she suffered several courtship humiliations and catastrophes. An unconventional happily-ever-after arrived in spinsterhood, however, through novels that challenged assumptions about gender (one skeptic memorably deemed Pride and Prejudice "much too clever to have been written by a woman"). The narrative can be uneven in its level of sophistication, and while quotations are sourced, certain subjective assertions are not. But there is enough momentum in this lively presentation, amplified by well-chosen quotes and full-color images, to warrant a hearty recommendation to Austenites and dutiful researchers alike. This is a nicely illustrated and very basic life of Jane Austen, apparently intended for young adults. (I think that any adult who automatically turns up their nose at YA books is a fool.) Sidebars include accounts of major personalities and events, such as the Prince Regent and Napoleon. I don't consider it to be nearly as good as Carol Shield's Jane Austen: A Life (Penguin Lives), which is about the same length, but it is simpler, quicker read and the reader may prefer an illustrated biography. It includes a bibliography, notes, and index, and a list of a few major websites. A somewhat similar book, although it isn't considered a juvenile, is Marghanita Laski's Jane Austen (Literary Lives Series). This has a little more 'external' information about JA's life, including more dates. It also has a lot of contemporary and near-contemporary pictures of places associated with her.
I thought it was interesting how the author of this biography made clear the parts of Jane Austen's work that were partly autobiographical. Good use of letters and illustrations. Great for older students or (of course) anyone interested in Jane Austen.
